Chapter 425: Even the Dark Lord Isn't as Cruel as You
Chapter 425: Even the Dark Lord Isn't as Cruel as You
Peter Pettigrew's words plunged Harry and the others back into confusion. What they had been completely sure of now seemed uncertain again.
"So it looks like you only have the skill to slander others! Why don't you explain why you disguised yourself as a rat and hid for over ten years first?" Sirius Black sneered.
"It was Lupin, Lupin has been hunting me all along! I had to hide, I had to hide!" Peter Pettigrew shouted loudly, almost madly.
"Professor Lupin?" Harry and the others exclaimed in shock.
"Yes, that's right, it's Lupin. He's actually a Werewolf! The one who betrayed James wasn't just Black, but Lupin too!"
Peter Pettigrew revealed another shocking piece of information and, as he spoke, he became more and more fluent, shedding tears as he continued.
"Do you know why Lupin has been so poor and destitute these past years? He has always suspected that I am still alive, so he has been preparing to kill me to silence me, even giving up his job and choosing to starve!
Lupin has been searching the world for me these past few years because I am the only one who knows their true faces. He came to Hogwarts this year as a Professor because he found out I was here."
Peter Pettigrew cried like a tearful person, looking at Harry and saying,
"Besides, I wanted to stay by your side to protect you, Harry! You can't imagine how happy I was the first time I saw you at Hogwarts."
Ivan, who knew the truth, looked very strange. He knew Peter Pettigrew was cunning, but he never expected him to be so good at fabricating stories.
Fortunately, he was cautious and didn't expose Peter's identity in public, or else, besides other things, Lupin's Werewolf identity would have been revealed.
"How dare you, Peter, you filthy insect! You slander me, and now you want to drag Lupin into this?" Sirius angrily grabbed Peter by the collar and punched him hard in the nose.
Peter screamed in pain, his nose broken and blood and snot mixing together, spilling out in red and white.
Sirius didn't stop, and he threw another punch. Peter yelled frantically,
"Help, he wants to kill me, so no one will know the truth! Stop him!"
Harry and the others, who were watching, were at a loss. Ivan was a bit worried that Peter might be beaten to death and was about to say something to calm them down.
At that moment, the door to the Shrieking Shack suddenly opened, and a voice came through.
"Peter, I never thought you would say such things behind my back. Your storytelling skills have certainly improved!"
Everyone turned to look, and Lupin, dressed in a patched robe, walked in. His face looked pale and sickly, and he tightly gripped his wand.
Sirius, seeing Lupin, wasn't surprised because he had invited him, but he noticed that Lupin's condition seemed off.
"What's wrong, Lupin? Are you okay?" Sirius threw the bruised and bloodied Peter aside, furrowing his brow in confusion.
"I just took the Wolfsbane Potion, so I've been feeling a bit weak these past few days!" Lupin shook his head, indicating that he was fine.
Ivan interrupted them at this point, emphasizing, "The genuine Wolfsbane Potion doesn't have this weakening effect. You might have been tricked by Snape."
"Maybe! After all, he's never really liked me. As long as it works, that's all that matters." Lupin said with a bitter smile.
He transformed once every month, and the potion given to him by Severus Snape had side effects that made him weak, but at least it suppressed the ferocity after the transformation, which was enough for him.
After all, the genuine Wolfsbane Potion was not cheap. He had just become a Professor, and his finances were not yet plentiful. Years of wandering had also instilled in him the habit of saving wherever possible.
Then, Lupin turned to look at Harry and the others, and said apologetically, "I'm sorry for keeping it from you for so long. I was worried that my Werewolf identity would cause panic, so I chose to keep it a secret."
Peter Pettigrew, despite his pain, suddenly showed an excited look on his twisted face. He pointed at Lupin and shouted, "Did you hear that? He admitted it! He admitted he's a Werewolf!"
"Even if Lupinprofessor is a Werewolf, that doesn't prove anything. Every group has good and bad people. The notion that werewolves are evil is just a prejudice held by many Wizards. I believe Lupinprofessor is a good person!"
Hermione interrupted Peter and then said to Harry and the others, "Right, Harry, Ron?"
"That's right, Lupin is the best Defense Against the Dark Arts class Professor I've ever had!"
Harry thought about how Lupin had been dedicated and responsible in his teaching, and how he had always cared for him. He quickly made his decision.
After all, his best friend and the Professor he trusted the most had both told him that Sirius Black was innocent and that Peter was the real traitor who betrayed his parents!
This tipped the scales in Harry's heart, which had been wavering, completely in favor of Sirius Black.
Ron also nodded dumbly, still staring at Peter, unable to fully believe that his beloved rat could turn into a bald old man.
Even if it had turned into something else, why did it have to be this way?
The excitement on Peter Pettigrew's face froze as he saw everyone in the room turn against him. Despair gradually spread through his heart.
Peter struggled to crawl to Ivan's feet, grabbing his thigh, and asked with a last glimmer of hope, "Hals! You're so smart, you must believe me, right?"
"Save it, Peter. Why do you always do this? You have no originality, but at least your stories are getting more elaborate!" Ivan said, exasperated, and kicked Peter Pettigrew to the side.
After a moment of thought, Ivan waved his wand and conjured a rope to tightly bind him, adding a spell that would weaken him further.
Although Peter without a wand posed no real threat, it was better to be cautious. After all, there were still young Wizards like Harry, Hermione, and Ron here. If Peter suddenly attacked and took them hostage, it would be a serious problem.
Upon hearing Ivan's words, Peter Pettigrew, who had been thrown into the corner, fell into even deeper despair. The pain in his body was overshadowed by the chill that rose from his feet to his heart.
He wasn't stupid. Combining the fragmented memories of the past few days, he quickly realized something terrible. He drew a sharp breath, no wonder he had felt something was missing lately.
Peter looked at Ivan again, trembling as if he were looking at a demon. He thought even the Dark Lord might not be as cruel as this.
