Chapter 424: Rumors
Chapter 424: Rumors
December 15, 2024
The next morning, after a quick wash, the group had breakfast and set off again.
Outside the cave, there was not a trace of last night's events, and even the blood had been licked clean by unknown beasts.
Xinyin walked at the front, frequently changing direction to avoid potential threats.
"At this speed, if all goes well, we'll reach the base in a day and a half at most," Chu Feng said with a smile.
"A day and a half is still too long. It would be great if we could get there today," Elder Qin laughed beside him.
Jiang Cheng also laughed.
He had figured it out; although Elder Qin was the oldest among them, he played the role of keeping the atmosphere lively.
Chu Feng, being the leader, always carried an aura around him, even with his constant smile.
As for Captain Shen, she wasn't exactly cold-hearted, but she didn't exude much warmth either, and on top of that, she was a woman.
Fortunately, Elder Qin was there to liven up the atmosphere; otherwise, the journey would have been quite awkward.
After a long journey, it was already noon. The group reheated the leftover grilled meat from the night before, ate it, and set off again.
As they hurried along, in the underground tunnels of the Inner District of Dongfang City, a group of people knelt in a room that resembled a grand hall. They had their hands clasped together, eyes closed, and mouths chanting prayers, seemingly engaged in some kind of religious ceremony.
Archbishop An stood at the front, facing the congregation, his gaze sweeping over the worshippers.
He was checking to see who wasn't devout enough!
Just then, faint footsteps sounded from outside, and a believer moved his lips towards the Archbishop.
Archbishop An nodded and slowly walked towards him.
The believers seemed unaware, still with their eyes closed.
Once they were out of the hall and in an adjacent small room, the believer spoke, "Archbishop, I've found out what happened. It's the Gu family in the city that's in trouble."
"The Gu family? The one with the best business?"
"Yes."
"What happened?"
The believer immediately recounted the details of the incident.
"Interesting."
Archbishop An's lips curled up as he finished listening.
"The eldest young master of the prestigious Gu family was actually outsmarted by a poor kid from the slums?"
"Yes, Archbishop. When I first heard the news, I couldn't believe it, so I asked around, and everyone said the same thing. That's why I dared to come and report it to you." The believer flattered with a smile.
"Hmm, well done."
Archbishop An praised him verbally, "But for Chu Feng to come all this way to personally fetch someone, that kid must be more than just a 10th Rank Alchemist. Right?"
"As expected of Archbishop, nothing escapes your notice."
The believer timely flattered him, "That kid is indeed extraordinary. I heard he can refine a Top-Rank Vigor Pill from just seven or eight portions of medicinal ingredients. Once or twice is one thing, but he can do it every time. Under Gu Changlin, he can generate a profit of five to six hundred million a month!"
"Whoa..."
Archbishop An took a deep breath.
Just because he was an Archbishop didn't mean he didn't need money.
A monthly income of five to six hundred million was quite substantial for him.
If he had known the kid's identity, he should have kept him there.
Wait, with Chu Feng around, it seemed impossible.
"By the way, Archbishop, I also heard some rumors."
"Rumors? What rumors?"
"It's said that when Chu Feng and his group left, they stole the treasures from Gu Changlin. That kid is the eldest young master of the Gu family, so the treasures on him must be extraordinary. It's said that there's even a Seventh Rank Treasure among them."
"What? A Seventh Rank Treasure?"
Archbishop An's squinted eyes widened in surprise.
"Yes, a Seventh Rank Treasure! The Tranquilizing Orb!" The cultist licked his lips, his face filled with envy and jealousy. "That little brat, Gu Changlin, had the Tranquilizing Orb with him at the time, and it was stolen right from his body. I heard that the Gu Family Patriarch was so furious that he locked him up in confinement. I doubt he has any hope of inheriting the position of the family head now."
"Is that true?"
As he heard this, Archbishop An's eyes were filled with doubt.
It was a Seventh Rank Treasure, used by Supreme Powerhouses. How could it be carried around by a little kid?
"It's just a rumor. I don't know if it's true or not, but that's what they're saying outside. I heard it came from within the Gu Family. I think it's quite believable."
After listening, Archbishop An fell silent for a moment, then suddenly asked, "What do you think will happen if we spread this news?"
"Spread this news?"
The cultist was taken aback, feeling confused. This news was something he had brought back from outside; did it need to be spread again?
"Idiot."
Archbishop An glanced at him, "I mean, spread the news of who stole the Tranquilizing Orb."
"!!!"
The cultist was shocked, his eyes almost popping out of their sockets.
To be honest, although the Gu Family had offered a bounty, he wasn't particularly tempted. Not only the Gu Family, but the entire Inner District was their enemy. Who would leak information to their enemies?
Moreover, the other party was the leader of the Resistance Army. Even if the Gu Family suffered a loss, it was unlikely that they would do much about it, and the matter would quickly fade away, not causing much trouble.
Of course, there was another reason, one that few people knew about.
"Think about it. If the news of the stolen Tranquilizing Orb is true, what do you think the Gu Family's reaction will be when they find out who took it? It's a Seventh Rank Treasure, they'll spare no expense to get it back!"
Archbishop An's smile became increasingly twisted.
"One is the Gu Family, and the other is the Resistance Army. Which one do you think will win?"
"Archbishop, if we do this, Chu Feng will surely suspect us. What if he tells the people from the Revenge Organization? Then, how will we explain ourselves to them?" The cultist looked troubled.
"Hmph, what's there to explain? It was they who approached us for cooperation, not the other way around. Besides, do you think the Resistance Army is all sunshine and rainbows on the inside?"
"What do you mean, Archbishop?" The cultist was stunned.
"Human hearts are the most unpredictable things in the world, and the Resistance Army is no exception. Those two organizations have long disliked Chu Feng's group. If Chu Feng dies, it won't be a bad thing for them. They can officially take over his territory, and eventually, the two organizations will merge into one, transforming the former Resistance Army Alliance into the true Resistance Army."
"So," the cultist suddenly understood, and then became a little curious, "but will the Supreme Being behind Chu Feng agree to this?"
"Circumstances are stronger than people. If it comes to that, they'll have no choice but to agree."
Archbishop An smiled triumphantly, "So, by doing this, we're actually helping them out, you understand?"
"I understand, no wonder you're the Archbishop! I'll have someone spread this news right away and see if the Tranquilizing Orb is really missing. If it's true, the Gu Family will surely spare no effort, and we'll have a good show to watch."
"Hahaha, go, go!" Archbishop An burst into laughter.
