Chapter 422: Professor Oak's Visit
Chapter 422: Professor Oak's Visit
On February 25, 200, of the Pokemon League calendar, after a full day of flying, Professor Oak's plane finally touched down in the Paldea region.
The Kanto Airlines passenger plane, filled with tourists, landed at Pastel City Airport.
Dressed casually, Professor Oak stepped out of the plane, his face filled with curiosity as he gazed upon the bustling metropolis.
Interestingly, this was his first time visiting the Paldea region! The architecture of Pastel City exuded a unique Paldean flair, and at its heart stood an ancient and venerable academy.
The Paldea Academy.
Before embarking on his journey, Professor Oak had done his research and gained a general understanding of the current state of the Paldea region.
Exiting the airport and walking along the streets, Professor Oak excitedly observed the unfamiliar Pokemon accompanying the pedestrians.
There were grass-cat Pokemon with green fur and a cat-like appearance, hammer Pokemon with pink bodies holding tiny hammers, and lizard Pokemon with tire-shaped airbags in front of them.
Wow! All these Pokemon are unseen in the Kanto region! Professor Oak pulled out his Rotom Phone and began scanning these fascinating creatures.
Having a Rotom Phone sure is convenient! Back in his day, they had to draw and compile the Pokemon encyclopedia by hand!
Now, a simple scan with the phone reveals all the ecological information about a Pokemon.
The Rotom's mechanized electronic voice emanated from the phone.
"Sprigatito, the Grass Cat Pokemon. Its fluffy fur contains plant-like components, and it diligently grooms itself to prevent dryness!"
"Crafty, the Hammer Pokemon. In its quest for large and sturdy hammers, it attacks groups of Copperajah to collect metal!"
"Moto-Stryke, the Riding Pokemon. It has been depicted in ancient murals as carrying humans on its back since ancient times, over ten thousand years ago!"
"Indeed, these are unique Pokemon of the Paldea region!"
Professor Oak, visiting Paldea for the first time, was brimming with curiosity about the variety and ecology of Pokemon in this region.
He wondered if he should ask Ash to travel here and help him collect data for the encyclopedia, perhaps even capturing a few Paldean Pokemon to bring back to the laboratory. But Ash was currently traveling in the Hoenn region...
"Never mind, I'll wait until Ash finishes his journey in Hoenn," Professor Oak thought to himself.
After all, the Kanto and Paldea regions are located at opposite ends of the planet, with other regions in between. It would be best for Ash to travel at a gradual pace.
"Ah! I almost forgot the purpose of my visit!" Professor Oak exclaimed, snapping out of his Pokemon-induced distraction.
He lowered his head to look at his Rotom Phone, searching for directions from Pastel City to Blajoud Town.
Soon enough, Professor Oak found the answer - Braviary Air Taxi.
Five minutes later, Professor Oak was seated in an air taxi pulled by three Braviary.
Ropes were tied to the Braviary, with the other end connected to the air taxi.
The air taxi had two rows of seats, with the front row for the driver and the back row for passengers.
"What a unique mode of transportation!" Professor Oak exclaimed in wonder.
They didn't have anything like this in the Kanto region.
The driver in front smiled and said, "This is your first time in the Paldea region, isn't it, sir?"
Professor Oak nodded, "Yes, it is!"
"No wonder!" The driver explained, "The Braviary Air Taxi is a unique means of transportation in the Paldea region. Not only here, but our neighbors in the Galar region also use this method. However, their driver Pokemon is not Braviary, but a Pokemon called Corviknight."
Corviknight? Professor Oak immediately recalled the massive, jet-black bird Pokemon with steel-like feathers that he had seen in the city earlier.
Professor Oak asked, "I noticed that there are Corviknight Pokemon in the Paldea region as well. Why don't you hire them for this job?"
Based on their appearances, Corviknight seemed more suited for the task, be it in terms of size or speed.
However, upon hearing this, the driver in front wore a troubled expression, "It's not that we don't want to hire Corviknight, it's that we can't."
"Oh?"
"You see, there's a Pokemon native to the Paldea region called Scovillain. It's highly intelligent, and if it spots a Corviknight flying in the sky, it will immediately attack it with its hammer."
Upon hearing this, two words popped into Professor Oak's mind: natural enemy!
Scovillain was the natural enemy of Corviknight, just like Caterpie and Pidgey!
"I see!"
No wonder the Paldea region didn't use Corviknight for air taxis.
When Professor Oak opened his eyes again, the Braviary taxi had already arrived at Blajoud Town.
He got out of the taxi and started walking down the streets of Blajoud, taking out his phone to send a private message to Rayquaza.
Although Professor Oak wanted to go directly, the problem was that Rayquaza hadn't given him his detailed address before, only mentioning Blajoud Town.
As soon as he sent the message, he received a reply.
[Farmer: Please wait.]
Professor Oak stood and waited.
About two minutes later, a rotund Pokemon with a big belly landed in front of him.
It was a Salamence! Professor Oak was surprised.
The Salamence stared at him for a moment, then turned around and let out a call.
"Roar!"
Professor Oak was taken aback for a moment, then pointed to himself and asked, "Do you want me to get on your back?"
"Roar!" Salamence nodded.
"Did your trainer send you to pick me up?" Professor Oak asked again.
Salamence nodded again.
Seeing this, Professor Oak understood.
Without saying much more, he climbed onto the Salamence's back.
The Salamence flapped its wings and took off into the sky, heading towards the outskirts of town.
Soon, a ranch came into view in the fields ahead.
The Salamence landed at the ranch, and as soon as Professor Oak dismounted, he saw a familiar figure waiting for him.
Naoki greeted him with a smile. "Long time no see, Professor Oak!"
Professor Oak widened his eyes in disbelief.
"It's you!"
At last year's Unova Region banquet, there was a trainer who had accompanied the Unova Champion, Adeku. Moreover, this trainer had defeated the famous Dragon Master Lance of the Kanto Region...
Because of this, Professor Oak had a deep impression of this trainer.
Naoki smiled and nodded. "Yes, it's me. Nice to meet you, Professor Oak. Let me introduce myself formally. I'm Naoki, the owner of this ranch. Welcome to the Paldea region."
At first, Professor Oak didn't think much of Naoki's identity as a ranch owner.
At Naoki's invitation, they headed toward the living room to have some tea and rest.
Along the way, Professor Oak noticed all sorts of Pokemon.
Neatly arranged furrows were filled with various crops.
And next to the fields was a perfectly trained Salamence, using Rain Dance.
A rain cloud formed above the fields, and a gentle drizzle fell, irrigating the crops below.
"That's my Salamence," Naoki said, noticing Professor Oak's gaze. "It's currently in charge of watering the fields."
Professor Oak nodded, and just then, he saw a large group of dark Pokemon flying overhead.
He looked up and saw that they were all Salamence, and each one was carrying a backpack!
"What about those Salamence?!" Professor Oak exclaimed in surprise. There were so many of them!
He had once visited the Dragon Holy Land, but even there, in the Dragon Holy Land, there weren't this many Salamence!
Naoki glanced over and explained, "Oh, them! They're the delivery team for the ranch. I recently opened an online store, and when customers place orders, the Salamence deliver the goods to them."
"???"
At this moment, Professor Oak finally realized something was amiss.
Having captured so many Salamence and possibly even the legendary Pokemon Rayquaza, how could someone call themselves a mere ranch owner?
Shouldn't they be a trainer with Champion-level strength? In his many years, Professor Oak had never met a ranch owner like this.
Not even Ranch Owner Whitney of MooMoo Farm in Goldenrod City was like this.
Could he be a retired trainer?
As far as Professor Oak knew, some trainers chose to retire when they became adults and pursued other careers.
That must be it!
"You're still young," Professor Oak said, puzzled. "Why did you retire so early?"
"Retired?" Naoki was taken aback for a moment, not quite understanding.
Naoki had encountered such misunderstandings numerous times before, and now he simply didn't feel like explaining, so he said, "Instead of Pokemon battles, I'd rather live a peaceful life here with my Pokemon."
"Oh, I see!" Professor Oak's gaze shifted to the Pokemon, a smile on his face. "You must love them very much."
He could tell that the Pokemon were in excellent spirits and were clearly well taken care of by Naoki.
"Indeed!" Naoki smiled in response.
As they continued forward, Professor Oak's attention was once again captured by the other Pokemon on the ranch.
"Goler, Motostryke, Baboot, Frostagoat, Greavard, and Hisuian Braviary, I remember them!" Professor Oak exclaimed excitedly, recalling how Naoki had sent them out during the banquet they attended previously.
Naoki smiled and nodded, then turned to the Pokemon on the side and introduced them, "That's a Seismitoad, and next to the Frostagoat is an Eiscue. Over there, the black horse is a Spectrier, and the white one is a Rapidash. They were all favorites of King Regales."
The other Pokemon were playing across the river in the Snorlax Park, and Naoki wasn't in a hurry to introduce them all, especially since Professor Oak seemed curious and eager to study them thoroughly later on.
Naoki figured he could introduce them to Professor Oak at a later time.
Looking at these unfamiliar Pokemon, Professor Oak was so excited that he felt dizzy.
So many Pokemon! Was this paradise? The variety of Pokemon living on this ranch far exceeded the number in his laboratory!
As a Pokemon ecologist, Professor Oak was eager to start observing these Pokemon right away.
However, his rational mind reminded him that there was something even more important to do first.
He hadn't met the legendary Pokemon yet, the one who was said to be able to use a Rotom Phone to surf the internet and was known as the King of Bountiful Harvest.
Noticing Professor Oak's expression, Naoki smiled. At that moment, the two of them arrived at the house.
Naoki pushed open the door and invited him in, "Please come in!"
"Then I shall!"
Professor Oak stepped in, his face filled with excitement. His eyes immediately landed on the Pokemon seated on the sofa.
It was... King Regales!
Professor Oak was thrilled beyond measure. He finally got to see this legendary Pokemon in person!
"I believe no introduction is needed?" Naoki said with a smile.
King Regales also noticed Professor Oak and gracefully nodded, using telepathy to greet him, "Greetings, Professor Oak."
It... it spoke!
Professor Oak took a sharp breath.
But soon, he realized that King Regales hadn't actually spoken aloud; it had used telepathy.
"Please, have a seat," Naoki invited Professor Oak to sit on the sofa.
Akuppa, his little sister, served tea to their guest.
Professor Oak drank the tea in one go, his eyes still shining with excitement as he looked at King Regales.
This wasn't the first time Professor Oak had encountered a legendary Pokemon.
Decades ago, he had met Celebi, the mythical Pokemon capable of traveling through time, in a forest.
Even so, Professor Oak was still incredibly excited.
After all, this was an extremely rare legendary Pokemon!
"When did you first meet King Regales?" Professor Oak asked.
Naoki thought back and replied, "It was probably in the winter of two years ago."
That would have been in the year 198, so it had already been two years since then.
"At that time, King Regales had lost its power and memory, wandering alone in the vast snowfields," Naoki continued.
Hearing about King Regales' past, Professor Oak was astonished. "How did that happen?"
Instead of answering directly, Naoki asked, "Do you know about the Galar region, Professor Oak?"
Galar region... Professor Oak nodded.
"King Regales used to live in the Galar region," Naoki went on. "It was once the king there, revered by the people thousands of years ago. Ancient people built temples and offered sacrifices to it."
Hearing this, Professor Oak paused for a moment, taken aback.
The King of Bountiful Harvest was actually the ancient king of the Galar region...
This news was truly shocking!
But then, Professor Oak recalled another statement Naoki had made earlier.
If King Regales had been so revered in the past, why did it lose its power and memory and end up wandering in the snowfields?
Could it be that someone had ambushed King Regales to seize the throne?
