Chapter 420: The Dragons Must Die
Chapter 420: The Dragons Must Die
"Attack of the Blue-Eyes Shining Dragon!"
Kaiba roared.
"Attack 'Torture Doll'!!!"
Blue-Eyes Shining Dragon. ATK: 4800
Torture Doll. ATK: 0
It seemed like a major oversight on Yugi's part to allow the Torture Doll, summoned by the Torture King, to be in an attacking position. The Shining Dragon's attack would bring an end to the entire duel.
But Kaiba furrowed his brows, sensing something amiss.
Could it be that simple?
Just as the Shining Dragon's annihilating strike was about to land, a burst of powerful electromagnetic sparks erupted. An invisible repulsive force deflected the dragon's projectile and its body, sending the space-piercing white light into the sky, its destination unknown.
"Huh?" Kaiba exclaimed in surprise, "But the Blue-Eyes Shining Dragon is unaffected by other card effects. Why was its attack..."
Kaiba caught a fleeting glimpse of a turtle-like shadow on the dueling field and hummed in recognition.
"Is that one of his monsters again?"
"Super-Electromagnetic Turtle from the graveyard," Yugi revealed, playing the card that had been banished from the game.
"During your opponent's turn, by excluding this card from the game, you can force the battle phase to end." Yugi smiled, "The Blue-Eyes Shining Dragon is unaffected by card effects, but this isn't an effect that targets a monster.
Even a god-surpassing monster cannot change the rules of the duel. Forcing the end of the battle phase naturally renders the attack invalid."
Kaiba offered a faint smile.
This was reminiscent of their duel all those years ago.
". . ."
Kaiba: "Obelisk the Tormentor, tear Osiris to shreds!"
Yugi: "Effect of the Super-Electromagnetic Turtle in the graveyard!"
Kaiba: "Useless! The effects of those weak monsters won't work on my gods!"
Yugi: "I know, but it's not an effect that targets gods. The Super-Electromagnetic Turtle can force an end to the battle phase, rendering even a god's attack meaningless!"
". . ."
That infuriatingly confident attitude never changed, and it was precisely this aspect that made that person so important to him.
For Kaiba, dueling that person always pushed him to his intellectual and physical limits, bringing him to the brink and forcing him to surpass himself time and again.
The very existence of that person made his blood boil with excitement.
This was why, even after all these years, he couldn't forgive how that person arrogantly snatched victory from his grasp and then left, basking in their triumph.
And now, as this duel progressed, he was beginning to see glimpses of that person in the boy before him.
Was it an illusion?
It didn't matter.
The only thing that mattered was that this duel embodied the kind of battle he had pursued and believed in for so many years.
"I'll end my turn by setting two cards face-down."
Kaiba swept his arm, setting the two cards on the field.
The situation was indeed becoming unfavorable for Yugi.
The deck Kaiba was using had already surpassed the meta of this generation, and now he had brought out a powerhouse like the Blue-Eyes Shining Dragon.
"The Ultimate Dragons, one after another, with no break in between. You certainly keep me on my toes, CEO Kaiba," Yugi said with a wry smile, acknowledging the challenging situation.
Ah well, the outcome of this duel didn't really matter. He was merely testing his limits, and whether he won or lost was secondary to the experience itself.
He felt no fear of defeat and held no excessive desire for victory. As Jaden often said, it was about immersing oneself fully in the duel and giving it your all in the present moment.
"My turn, draw!"
In that instant, the Seal of Orichalcos seemed to flicker, and the Eye of Horus briefly shone with a golden light.
Kaiba's pupils contracted slightly as he sensed that familiar "power," an exhilarating aura that stirred his blood.
"During the preparation phase of this turn, the effect of 'Take Over 5' in the graveyard is activated. This card and its counterpart in my deck are excluded from the game, and I draw one card from my deck."
The magic card disappeared amidst the ethereal golden light, and Yugi drew another card.
[Yugi: LP 1850 → LP 850]
Iron Dumbass emitted a muffled sound, hanging its head low in apparent dejection. But Yugi paid it no mind and merely smiled faintly. "Minor issue."
Then, he played another card from his hand.
"I activate the Spell Card, 'Advanced Draw!' " Yugi declared. "By tributing 'Lava Golem' of Level 8 or higher, draw 2 cards from your Deck!"
The Lava Golem dissolved into a molten heap, disappearing into Yugi's Graveyard. Yugi drew two cards.
Then he slowly drew out one of the cards he had just obtained.
"And now, I activate this card!"
He raised his arm, and the image of a green card appeared on the field.
"Polymerization! (Original Card)"
Jaden almost jumped up. "Wow! It's the same card I used!"
"Oh?" Kaiba said. "You're going to attempt a Fusion at this point?"
"By sending the top 5 cards of your Deck to the Graveyard," Yugi explained, "if among them there exist Fusion Material Monsters that can fulfill the Fusion requirements, then you can Special Summon the corresponding Fusion Monster!
"That is, if you're able to draw them," Kaiba chuckled.
Yugi nodded. "If I'm able to draw them."
Marufuji Ryo muttered, "He's putting everything on the line with this draw..."
For this guy, that was quite rare. But then again, his opponent was Seto Kaiba.
In other words, the situation had reached a point where it would be difficult to win without resorting to such means?
Kaiba narrowed his eyes, maintaining his slight smile.
Come on, show me, Fujiki Yugi.
Show me that brilliant moment of yours as a Duelist.
"Draw!"
Five cards entered his hand in one breath.
Two of them immediately burst forth with a golden light, transforming into the images of monsters that flew into the air. One was a dignified warrior clad in blue armor, wielding a heavy sword, and the other was a dragon warrior clad in armored scales.
"Among the cards I drew were these two," Yugi said.
"Destroyer Swordsman, and the Dragon-Type 'Armored Wyvern'!"
"Destroyer Sword!?" Kyosuke exclaimed in surprise.
Then he immediately realized, "Oh, right! After defeating Gousaburou, the Destroyer Sword was given to Yugi. There's no way he wouldn't include it in his Deck when facing his brother. This is the true ultimate weapon against the White Dragon!"
And likewise, it was also a derivative card used by Atem.
"The Fusion requirements are 'Destroyer Swordsman' plus any Dragon-Type monster," Yugi explained. "By fusing Destroyer Sword and 'Armored Wyvern'...
"...the ultimate Dragon-destroying swordsman, who carves a path to the future with his dragon-slaying blade—'Dragon Destroyer Swordsman - Destroyer Sword'! I Summon you!!!"
A swordsman who has obtained the power of dragons and achieved his final evolution—the ultimate Destroyer Swordsman! Thick armor, a dragon-slaying greatsword, and eyes that shine with a fierce light like rubies.
The swordsman descended, unfazed as he faced the godlike White Dragon, his hand on the hilt of his sword.
[Dragon Destroyer Swordsman - Destroyer Sword: ATK 2800]
This card had been exclusively developed by Gousaburou's spirit to counter Kaiba, so everyone else was seeing it for the first time and couldn't help but be astonished by the swordsman's formidable aura.
"So cool!" Jaden exclaimed. "When did Yugi quietly get such a powerful monster?"
"The effect of 'Dragon Destroyer Swordsman' negates the effects of all Dragon-Type monsters your opponent controls and makes them unable to change their battle positions!" Yugi declared.
Upon hearing this, the spectators were even more shocked.
What!?
This is a 'Dragons Must Die' effect!?
Kaiba's Duels are always long, and the next final Duel will be no exception.
However, there are only these two Duels, and after the tournament is over, the pace will return to one Duel per day.
