Chapter 420: Cheng Lian's Breakthrough
Chapter 420: Cheng Lian's Breakthrough
September 25, 2017
May 13th, 183 AD, night, outside Wudu County.
After three days of intense fighting, the WuXian army that had been besieging Wudu County was no longer as fierce and energetic as they were when they first arrived. Many of the soldiers had barely eaten for a day, and their physical strength was waning.
They hadn't been idle, though. A day earlier, they had sent a request for reinforcements and food supplies to Jiuyuan County. While they didn't receive any additional troops, food supplies were promised to be sent. However, a day had passed, and the food still hadn't arrived.
Unbeknownst to them, their food supplies had been intercepted en route, and they were still waiting for them. If the food didn't arrive today, they would have no choice but to retreat, as they couldn't fight on an empty stomach.
But they couldn't wait any longer, and Lu HaiKong had already decided to keep them pinned down.
The WuXian and Han camps were vastly different. The WuXian rarely set up proper camps, and it was common for them to sleep on horseback.
The reason for their current sleeping arrangements was largely due to underestimating Lu HaiKong's strength. They had thought that a dilapidated county would only take a day to conquer, but after three days of fighting, they still hadn't taken it. As a result, without tents or supplies, they had no choice but to sleep on their horses.
Without a proper camp and in a state of combat readiness, this was the fastest way for them to react to a potential attack from Lu HaiKong. It was a challenging way to rest, but fortunately, they were accustomed to it.
However, while this method seemed convenient for combat, it was incredibly dangerous, especially in the face of a surprise attack.
As night fell, a group of black cavalry quietly approached, and when the first wave of fire arrows rained down, the WuXian army realized the danger of their situation.
Normally, their vigilance would have detected the approaching Blackwind Legion, but after a day of intense fighting without food to replenish their energy, they were exhausted. Their alertness had diminished significantly, and many injured soldiers fell from their horses in their sleep. It wasn't until Lu HaiKong's Blackwind Legion launched their attack that they woke up, but it was too late.
A barrage of fire arrows fell, igniting the hay used to feed the horses in the camp. The sudden attack startled the horses, and chaos erupted throughout the camp.
One crazed horse wasn't a big deal, as these people who lived on horseback were skilled at calming them.
But when hundreds of horses went wild out of tens of thousands, spreading panic, and the Blackwind Legion charged in, releasing wave after wave of arrows, the situation became dire.
The tens of thousands of horses quickly descended into chaos, and the panic spread like a tidal wave. No one could calm the horses while under constant attack.
In the confusion, many soldiers fell from their horses and were trampled to death.
This was a terrifying and tragic way to die, and many perished in the chaos.
The battle didn't end there, and the two leaders of the WuXian army proved to be even more capable than Lu HaiKong had anticipated.
After witnessing the devastation wrought by the Blackwind Legion, they quickly pulled their forces back, allowing the crazed horses and their riders to perish in the chaos. It was a wise decision, and it saved at least two-thirds of their forces from the Blackwind Legion's assault.
"Attack! Slaughter those damn Han dogs!"
As they witnessed their fellow tribesmen dying in such a pitiful state, the two commanders issued their orders, and tens of thousands of troops sprang into action, charging towards the Black Wind Legion.
Facing this situation, Zhao Gang revealed a cruel smile and calmly led his troops in retreat, all the while using crossbows to strike their opponents from a distance.
In truth, this was an extremely one-sided battle, and for the Black Wind Legion, it was a breeze.
Although their opponents still numbered nearly forty thousand after the surprise attack, most of them were starving and lacked the stamina to compete with the well-rested Black Wind Legion. Furthermore, the Black Wind Legion possessed superior speed and equipment.
This sixty thousand-strong army was more like a disorganized mob, with many being nomads who had received little to no training before being thrust into battle, let alone possessing any complete set of equipment.
Against such enemies, the Black Wind Legion didn't even need to deploy their elite archers, and the Light Cloud Crossbows were more than sufficient.
In this battle, the Wuhuan and Xianbei tribes' forces were like two clumsy giant hands, chasing after the Black Wind Legion, a nimble black butterfly.
Despite the commanders being somewhat capable and coordinating with each other to form a pincer attack, they were still utterly useless.
Their movements were too slow, their strength too weak, and their stamina insufficient. They couldn't hold a candle to the Black Wind Legion. Even if they managed to form a pincer attack by chance, the Black Wind Legion could easily break through with their formidable power.
After pursuing the Black Wind Legion for over half an hour, they had only managed to exhaust themselves by running in circles, losing their remaining stamina and leaving behind countless fallen comrades. They gained nothing.
In the 6th month of the 9th year of the reign of Emperor Ling of the Han Dynasty, the Black Wind Legion had successfully annihilated the Wuhuan and Xianbei tribes' forces.
When they finally stopped, they realized, to their surprise, that they had been encircled by a wall of infantry outside Wudu County, led there by the Black Wind Legion.
The final battle commenced. On one side were the exhausted Wuhuan and Xianbei cavalry, and on the other, the well-rested Black Wind Legion. This battle was no less intense than the previous ones.
Lu Hai Kong spent over an hour in this battle, with over five thousand casualties, but in the end, the sixty thousand-strong army was completely annihilated beneath the walls of Wudu County.
It is worth mentioning that among the enemy commanders, two had impressive martial might. The Xianbei commander had a martial might of 79, and the Wuhuan commander had a martial might of 78. They were both captured by Cheng Lian and Zhao Gang and taken as opponents.
It was unclear if it was due to Cheng Lian's outstanding talent or other reasons, but after defeating the Xianbei commander, Cheng Lian's martial might directly increased to 80, becoming another formidable warrior under Lu Hai Kong with a martial might of 80.
As Cheng Lian's martial might broke through, this war finally came to an end, and Lu Hai Kong received a system notification.
"Congratulations on your annihilation victory! You have obtained a Golden Chest, 150,000 allocatable skill experience, and your Commander attribute has increased to 58."
"Congratulations on annihilating the Wuhuan and Xianbei Alliance Army of 60,000. Your mission evaluation for 'Evaluating the Wuhuan and Xianbei Rebellion' has increased."
"Your subordinate Cheng Lian's martial might has broken through in battle and is now at 80!"
Hearing the system notifications, Lu Hai Kong's lips curled into a satisfied smile. "Not bad. With the recovery of Wudu County and the annihilation of the sixty thousand Xianbei troops, it should be much easier for Zhang Rang to manipulate things on his end."
