Chapter 419: The Dragon of Light
Chapter 419: The Dragon of Light
The Strongest Blue-Eyes Ever
Connected to the world of the anime, Kaiba faced off against his counterpart from that realm. With the mention of "it," Yugi seemed to have an inkling of what was being referred to.
If it was "that," then theoretically, that card shouldn't exist anymore.
Nonetheless, the mystery would soon be unveiled.
"I activate the magic card, Shuffle Reborn," Kaiba declared. "This card can only be activated when there are no monsters on your field. Select a monster from your graveyard and Special Summon it."
A surge of azure data converged into a card, emerging from his Duel Disk's graveyard.
"My strongest servant, the ultimate dragon—Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon! Arise once more!"
A towering white light, accompanied by a deafening roar, signaled the return of the invincible three-headed white dragon in all its divine majesty!
[Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon: ATK 4500]
"You immediately summoned back the Ultimate Dragon. As expected of Kaiba," Yugi smiled. "However, monsters summoned by Shuffle Reborn's effect have their effects negated, and they must be removed from play during the End Phase."
"Eh?" Joey exclaimed in surprise. "But with 'True Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon' in the graveyard, my brother's Ultimate Dragon is invincible! It's unaffected by any card effects."
"No," Yugi corrected. "It's 'unaffected by your opponent's card effects'."
Yusei, sitting beside him, nodded in agreement and added, "But since 'Shuffle Reborn' is Kaiba's own card, the drawback can't be avoided."
"Oh, I see," Joey said, understanding.
"However," Takasu Ryou interjected, "Kaiba must have his reasons. He surely has a plan in mind."
He was right.
Kaiba slowly drew a card from his hand.
"Finally," he said, his voice steady. "After so many years, I've once again obtained this power.
Lend me this power once more, and descend in your strongest form—
As Kaiba's pupils contracted, he raised the card in his hand, and a shining beam of blue light shot straight into the sky. The soaring azure light pierced the clouds, summoning countless churning cerulean lightning dragons.
Yusei was stunned.
It seemed that something extraordinary was about to unfold.
"Offer the 'Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon' as a Tribute!" Kaiba proclaimed.
Upon hearing this, the onlookers were even more astonished.
The Ultimate Dragon, already so formidable, was to be sacrificed? What kind of monster would emerge from such a condition?
"Hear my summons from beyond the ultimate monsters, and erase all that stands in your way. Dragon of Light, reveal yourself—
—Blue-Eyes Shining Dragon!!!"
Emerging from the light, a legendary ultimate monster appeared before them. Adorned in what resembled refined steel and starry armor, it exuded a deep, icy blue radiance, akin to a newborn blue sun—pure yet intense.
No, it wasn't merely a dragon; it was akin to a guardian deity.
Venerated as a deity by the ancient Egyptians, it had first reappeared in card form in the hands of the father of Duel Monsters, Maximillion Pegasus, several years ago. Briefly, it had served as Kaiba's new ace, surpassing even the gods.
However, in the final moments of the theatrical release of "Pyramid of Light," the Blue-Eyes Shining Dragon had immolated itself to destroy the root of the enemy boss's power, the "Pyramid of Light." But as a consequence, the card had also disintegrated into specks of light and vanished.
This had been Kaiba's pinnacle in terms of the white dragon's power, and even after all these years, he had been unable to develop a stronger form. Thus, it was only natural that he had exhausted all means and resources to attempt to recreate this card.
And now, after so many years, he had finally succeeded.
Atem had been Kaiba's first and last opponent after obtaining the Blue-Eyes Shining Dragon. And now, Yugi would become the second.
[Blue-Eyes Shining Dragon: ATK 3000]
"When Blue-Eyes Shining Dragon is affected by a card effect, its controller can choose to apply or ignore the effect." Kaiba explained the card's ability.
"This is the true ultimate resistance, the final evolution of the White Dragon!" Kaiba proclaimed.
Takasu Ryou's expression shifted slightly as he heard this.
"Can you choose whether or not to accept the effect?! Is such resistance even possible?"
"Indeed, it surpasses the ultimate dragon from before with its resistance," Yusei agreed. "The ultimate dragon was already an epic and rare powerhouse in our eyes, and now it has been so easily surpassed."
". . . I activate the magic card, 'Dragon Shrine'."
"I send two 'Blue-Eyes White Dragon,' treated as Normal Monsters, from my deck to the graveyard," Kaiba explained.
"The fusion of 'Ultimate Union' will shuffle the fusion materials back into the deck," You Xuan commented, "to increase the power of the Blue-Eyes Shining Dragon?"
Kaiba snorted. "Indeed, you know quite a bit. Correct. The attack strength of the Blue-Eyes Shining Dragon increases according to the number of Dragon-Types in my graveyard. For every Dragon-Type in my graveyard, the Blue-Eyes Shining Dragon gains 300 attack points!"
Images of the Dragon-Types in his graveyard appeared one after another.
First was the XYZ Dragon Cannon discarded as a cost for its effect in the initial turn, followed by the Tyrant Dragon discarded for Costly Shopping, the True Ultimate Dragon, the Ultimate Dragon just offered as a tribute, and finally, the two White Dragons sent to the graveyard by Dragon's Shrine.
"Six Dragon-Types, for a total attack boost of 1800 points!"
[Blue-Eyes Shining Dragon: ATK 3000 → ATK 4800]
"Its attack even surpasses the Ultimate Dragon!" Judai exclaimed.
"Not only that," Marufuji Ryo said gravely, "what's even more terrifying is that this ability has no upper limit. The Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon, even with complete immunity, has an attack strength of only 4500. But with this Blue-Eyes Shining Dragon, we can foresee that as the number of Dragon-Types in the graveyard increases, so too will its attack strength."
There was no telling how high the attack strength of this dragon could soar.
If he hadn't witnessed it himself, he would have found it hard to believe that a monster of such caliber existed in the world.
Once again, he stole a glance at You Xuan.
Facing such a duelist and such a monster, could he remain as calm and composed as ever?
"I really have seen it all," You Xuan murmured, gazing up at the god-like, radiant figure.
"A light dragon with anime effects," he added.
And Judai and Marufuji didn't even know that the Blue-Eyes Shining Dragon was still not displaying its full power. It had a hidden final effect, a trump card that wouldn't be easily deployed but also couldn't be overlooked.
"The power of the Blue-Eyes Shining Dragon will bring me one step closer to grasping the victory that lies ahead. But before we engage in battle..."
Kaiba waved his hand, and the card he had placed face-down on the field earlier was activated.
"I activate the face-down card on the field, the magic card 'Ancient Rules,' which allows me to special summon a Level 5 or higher Normal Monster from my hand.
Appear now, White Spirit Dragon!"
Amidst a radiant white light, a spirit-like white dragon descended, spinning gracefully as it generated a transparent white whirlwind that swept towards You Xuan's back row.
"When I summon the White Spirit Dragon, I can remove Spell and Trap Cards on the field from play!" Kaiba declared. "Remove the face-down card in your back row from play!"
You Xuan's face-down card was flipped—it was the Trap Card, 'Dimensional Wall.'
A trap that could redirect battle damage to the opponent.
Judai understood its effect immediately.
"Oh right! That's another one of his tricks," Judai exclaimed.
"Yes, even if the light dragon can freely choose whether to accept any effect, the Dimensional Wall redirects battle damage without affecting the monster," Marufuji agreed.
While the monster might be invincible, the duelist was not.
If Kaiba, in his arrogance over possessing the invincible Blue-Eyes Shining Dragon, recklessly charged forward without regard for any card effects, You Xuan could counter with his Dimensional Wall and instantly win the duel.
To be outmaneuvered in such a way would surely be a bitter pill to swallow.
Once again, he stole a glance at You Xuan, the master of endless cunning strategies.
"Hmph, the Dimensional Wall is useless before me," Kaiba declared, raising his voice. "Now, the true ending begins!"
His gaze was resolute.
Winning against You Xuan, advancing to the finals, or even claiming the title of Duel King held less significance to him than the special meaning this duel held.
It was his comeback duel, and it also marked a new step towards his future endeavors.
He would forge this bright future alongside his soul, his strongest servant.
"Blue-Eyes Shining Dragon, attack!
Shining Burst!!!
