Chapter 411: The Final Qualifying Match
Chapter 411: The Final Qualifying Match
Akira Hibiki lay in the hospital bed, his eyes closed, his body hooked up to various life-support and monitoring equipment.
"Sorry, Mr. Hibiki," Yugi Muto said as he sat by the bed, scratching his head. "But I think I still lost."
"As I said, you did more than enough," Echo Green whispered, "and I'm sure Hibiki would be comforted to know that."
You Xuan nodded in agreement. "You rewrote the effects of your cards during the duel. The Absolute Zero Hero received an epic-level power boost, which will have a far greater impact on Elemental Heroes than just winning a single duel."
It seemed that if Jaden Yuki could put on more pressure and unleash his full potential, it would be a boon for Element Duelists worldwide.
That was the true value of a natural-born dueling prodigy and a walking card-printing machine.
However, You Xuan was more concerned about another matter.
Although it was only for a brief moment, he was certain that he had witnessed the special power that Jaden had unleashed. His irises had turned a dangerous gold for just an instant—a sign of the King of Games.
But when he asked Jaden about it, he looked perplexed.
"Not at all," Jaden said. "If I had to describe how I felt at that moment... well, I wasn't thinking at all. I was just feeling incredibly determined not to give up and decided to put everything into that duel. Then, the next thing I knew, my moves just came naturally."
As expected, even Jaden couldn't explain what had happened.
However, You Xuan already had a bold hypothesis.
Although Jaden was the reincarnation of the King of Games, there were no hints or clues about it in the first half of the anime. It seemed that the King of Games' setup was added by a new screenwriter in the latter half of the series, making it seem abrupt compared to the earlier parts.
So, was it possible that even though Jaden was the reincarnation, the King of Games' spirit might not have been within him all this time?
Otherwise, why did the King of Games remain dormant during Jaden's numerous crises, even when he almost lost to Edo, empowered by Saiou? And when Jaden traveled to an alternate dimension to rescue Johan, why did the spirits of that world seem to already know about the King of Games, even though it was Jaden's first time there?
It was the Judge's recent words that had sparked this conjecture in You Xuan's mind.
Although Jaden had a close connection to the King of Games, it was possible that the King of Games had not been dormant within him initially but in the Spirit World—one of the twelve dimensions featured in the anime.
However, the King of Games' appearance in the anime was too brief, and he had dueled too infrequently for You Xuan to make any definite conclusions about his strength.
While the King of Games' entrance was well-crafted and made for a dramatic scene, his actual record was only one win and one draw.
Moreover, the King of Games had actually lost to Jim in their duel. It was an animation error that gave the King of Games 100 extra life points, allowing him to pull off a last-minute comeback and win by locking in at 50 life points. In reality, he should have lost that duel.
However, that was the case with the initial broadcast version of the anime. Later, when the GX anime was released on DVD, the production team corrected this bug.
In the DVD version, the attack strength of Jim's monster, "Fossil Dinosaur Pachycephalosaurus," was reduced from 1300 to 1200, reducing the damage by 100 points. This was done to ensure the King of Games' victory by preserving his final 50 life points.
This was also the reason why the real-life card version of Pachycephalosaurus had its attack strength lowered to 1200.
Just look at her record: the explosive Hell Kaiser, the Dark Magician who unsealed the Dark Sage, Amon, after sacrificing his wife; taking on the two main protagonists, Jaden and Johan, in a one-versus-two match; and finally facing off against Jaden again in back-to-back duels. Every one of Yuubel's duels was a quality match, and she dueled Jaden three times, including a one-versus-two duel and another where Jaden unsealed the Ultimate Monarch. Yet Yuubel never lost a single duel. The only tie she had with Jaden was when she took the opportunity to steal his Super Polymerization with Cowgirl.
Setting strength aside, Yuubel undoubtedly has the most impressive record of any villain in the history of Yu-Gi-Oh!
You Xuan thought to himself that he had now found a way to enter the Spirit World, and he would be able to explore those twelve dimensions from the anime in the future to search for any clues about the Ultimate Monarch.
Of course, all of that would have to wait until after he dealt with the immediate matter at hand—the upcoming match.
There were only twenty minutes left until the start of the promotion exam.
You Xuan returned to his room and made some final adjustments to his deck.
"The moment has finally arrived. My opponent is Kaiba, the CEO," he said to himself.
He was about to face the duelist who represented the pinnacle of this world and who would provide You Xuan with his best opportunity yet to test his own skills.
His spirits also seemed to be looking forward to the upcoming duel.
"The strongest duelist, Kaiba Seto," the android, Soga, said, crossing his arms.
"It doesn't matter. I'll take action," he added confidently.
"Hehehe," the Evil Emperor let out a strange, eerie laugh.
The android frowned, clearly annoyed. "What's so funny?"
"Don't make me laugh so hard that my teeth fall out. You may bully ordinary opponents, but what can you do against the White Dragon? Are you going to hold back our own team?" the Evil Emperor taunted.
Indeed, while Kaiba was a well-rounded duelist, he was not immune to traps, and his reliance on trap card tactics was undoubtedly not as strong as You Xuan's. As an opponent, Kaiba's style was simply a bad match for Soga.
Soga was momentarily at a loss for words, but then he retorted angrily, "So what? You're useless too! What can you do against someone with a whole family of light attributes when you're just a dark attribute killer?"
The Evil Emperor grew furious. "At least I can remove one card! At least I can remove myself from the game and deal damage! What about you?"
Soga was about to argue further when the White Mage suddenly stepped forward, the White Staff appearing between the two bickering spirits. Silent Magician glared at them, clearly ready to intervene if they didn't stop.
The two spirits immediately fell silent, glaring at each other but saying nothing more.
"No matter what strategy you choose," Chaos Soldier said from behind them, his voice calm, "my sword will always be by your side."
Of course, he had no other choice.
After all, a spirit's fate was tied to its owner. The legendary Chaos Soldier, known as the strongest warrior, had no choice but to obey his master's commands, even if it meant playing a self-destructive loop that burned through his own life points.
"Alright, that's enough," You Xuan said as he put away his deck and inserted it into his Duel Disk. He stood up and said, "Let's not keep Kaiba waiting any longer."
