Chapter 41: Wrapping Up This Matter
Chapter 41: Wrapping Up This Matter
Su Nan quietly returned to the inn room with Amy in tow. As soon as they entered, Amy immediately leaped onto the bed, rolling around on the soft sheets.
"Meow, I haven't slept on such a soft bed in days. No one will come to catch me tonight!"
"Although that's true, didn't you forget something important?"
On the way back to the inn, Su Nan had been mentally preparing himself, emphasizing that he had no ill intentions toward Amy. Now, he felt confident enough to start guiding her.
Amy, sprawled out on the bed, lifted her head and thought for a moment, then suddenly jumped up as if remembering something.
"Meow, I almost forgot! I haven't retrieved my master's belongings yet!"
The little kitten jumped onto Su Nan's lap and looked up at him with teary eyes.
"Su Nan, will you help me?"
It's good that you remembered.
Su Nan smiled warmly and scratched Amy's chin. "Of course, we're friends, aren't we?"
"Meow, thank you, Su Nan. You're such a good person."
Amy looked delighted and took a while to come back to her senses. She then asked eagerly, "So, what do we do?"
"Tomorrow night, we'll go to the Starfire Sect's base. I'll have Hidden Dragon lure the people inside away, and then we'll sneak in, retrieve your belongings, and take the Divine Blood Amber as well. We'll give them a lesson!"
"Meow, that's a great plan. Let's give them a lesson!"
Amy couldn't tell if the plan was good or bad, but she trusted Su Nan. If he said it would work, it would.
Relaxing, Amy yawned and climbed back onto the bed, quickly falling into a deep sleep.
Watching the carefree little cat, Su Nan couldn't help but chuckle and shake his head. He sat cross-legged at the foot of the bed and began meditating.
The night passed without incident.
The next day, Amy didn't wake up until nearly noon.
"Meow, I slept so well."
She leaped onto the table and scratched the bell hanging around her neck. A translucent, mint-leaf-shaped ice crystal appeared in her chubby paw.
Amy brought the ice crystal to her nose, sniffed it a few times, and then put it in her mouth.
She looked as if she were savoring a divine delicacy.
"What is that?" Su Nan asked curiously.
"It's Frozen Mint. It tastes great. Do you want to try it?"
Amy generously offered Su Nan a piece.
He took it, examined it for a moment, and then placed it in the Synthesis Cube.
[Frozen Mint: Carrying it can protect against heat toxins. Consuming it has a refreshing effect.]
So it's a magical plant. No wonder it looks so unique.
Su Nan glanced at Amy, who was cuddling the Frozen Mint, sniffing and licking it. She soon collapsed on the table, looking thoroughly content.
Shaking his head with amusement, Su Nan went to the window and sat down, taking out a book to read.
Recently, he had discovered another use for the Synthesis Cube: it could serve as a temporary storage item.
As long as the object was non-living and lacked consciousness, it could be placed inside the cube.
Additionally, the cube could shield the energy fluctuations of certain special items.
For example, the Divine Blood Amber.
Whether it was in his pocket or in the bell around Amy's neck, the Starfire Sect could always sense its energy. But when placed in the Synthesis Cube, even Amy couldn't detect its energy.
From this, it was clear that the Synthesis Cube was a higher-level item than any spatial magic item.
The only drawback was that he had to take everything out of the cube to synthesize items, which was a bit troublesome.
"I still need to find a proper spatial magic item."
Su Nan sighed slightly, then focused on his reading.
In the evening, he went downstairs to eat, making his presence known to avoid the innkeeper knocking on his door if he didn't come out all day.
While eating, Su Nan overheard a conversation.
"Did you hear? The Viscount is recruiting brave warriors to eliminate evil spirits!"
"What evil spirits?"
"Didn't you hear about Lord Cubero's estate being haunted? It's said to be by evil spirits."
"Even the Viscount is involved in this?"
"Several knights have died. The Viscount has offered a thousand gold coins as a reward!"
"Really? A thousand gold coins? I could never spend that much in a lifetime!"
The patrons were in awe.
Su Nan's eyes flickered, but he finished his meal calmly and then went back upstairs to his room.
Time slowly passed, and the deep night gradually enveloped the entire Stone Bell City.
Su Nan looked out the window at the dark sky, closed his book, and stood up.
"It's time to move."
Amy, who had been idly licking her paw, immediately got up at his words.
"Meow, I’m ready!"
Su Nan nodded, pushed open the window, and leaped down into the dark alley behind the inn with a silent thud.
Amy appeared on his shoulder as if out of thin air.
Under the cover of night, the man and the cat dashed out of the alley and sprinted toward the Starfire Sect's base.
By the late hours, most of the city's residents were fast asleep.
The streets were almost deserted, with only the occasional drunkard sprawled out on the roadside.
Patrol guards occasionally passed by, but Su Nan detected their presence in advance and easily avoided them.
It didn’t take long for the pair to reach the Starfire Sect's base.
Seeing the brightly lit manor in the distance, a cold glint flashed in Su Nan’s eyes.
"Go and draw as many of them out as you can."
A low, hissing sound came from behind him, like a gentle breeze, and then everything returned to silence.
Deep within the manor, in the main building’s study, the atmosphere was suffocating.
Four priests stood with their heads bowed, not daring to breathe loudly or look at the High Priest Casper, who sat opposite them.
"Two priests and over twenty followers were all killed in one night, and you still haven’t found a single clue about the murderer."
Casper’s gaze swept over the four men, his voice growing colder.
"I’m starting to doubt whether any of you are fit to continue as priests!"
A thin layer of sweat broke out on the foreheads of the four priests.
An older priest quickly spoke up, "High Priest, we’ve examined the scene. Most of the followers died from the claws and fangs of some fierce beast. Priest Ryan’s body had signs of electrical burns, and as for Priest Troy, while we didn’t find his body, the evidence suggests he was likely incinerated by intense flames."
Casper narrowed his eyes, his voice icy, "Are you trying to tell me that the killer was a legendary knight who owns a powerful beast?"
"N-no, High Priest!"
The priest shook his head vigorously.
If a legendary knight who had a grudge against the sect had entered Stone Bell City, they would have known about it in advance.
"Those who wield elemental power are not only legendary knights but also wizards."
"We believe the attacker was likely a wizard, possibly connected to the magical creature we’ve been hunting!"
Casper remained silent for a moment before speaking, "Regardless, the two Divine Blood Ambers that were taken must be retrieved. They cannot be allowed to fall into the wrong hands!"
"I don’t care what methods you use, but you must find that wizard!"
"Otherwise, you know the consequences!"
"Yes, High Priest!"
The four priests stiffened, responding in unison.
Casper’s expression softened slightly, and he rubbed his temples, asking, "How is the investigation in Blackstone City going?"
A priest hesitated, "High Priest, the four men we sent there have lost contact. The list of informants provided by Baron Owen has been cleared out, and it’s likely that Yuri and the others have—"
Casper’s eyes twitched.
Losing two Great Knights and two High Knights was a significant blow to the Stone Bell City base.
Combined with the losses from the previous night, the damage was severe!
"Logically, Blackstone City only has one Great Knight, Koy Aniest. There’s no way Yuri and the others should have failed," another priest said.
Another priest scoffed, "There’s no need to guess. Baron Owen’s information was clearly wrong. There must be other powerful individuals in Blackstone City. He must take responsibility for this failed assassination!"
Casper turned to the older priest, who immediately understood. "Baron Owen claims he doesn’t know what went wrong. He’s furious and insists that our capabilities are lacking. He’s demanding that we send more assassins to kill the targets."
"His expectations are quite high."
Casper’s face twisted into a mocking smile, and he waved his hand.
"Tell him that the previous payment can be considered compensation for the faulty information. If he wants us to continue the assassination, he’ll need to pay an additional three thousand gold coins."
"Yes, High Priest."
Casper dismissed the four priests with a wave of his hand, then walked to the window and gazed out at the night sky.
"This mishap is significant, but we still have that batch of items. If we hand them over, it should be enough to make up for this mistake. With the right handling, another promotion is not out of the question."
"Once this matter is settled, I’ll personally take the items to Giant Oak City."
A faint smile appeared on Casper’s lips.
Boom!
A thunderous explosion echoed from the distance.
Casper’s smile froze, and he looked toward the source of the sound, where dust and debris were rising from the direction of the manor’s main gate.
