Chapter 41: The Tutor
Chapter 41: The Tutor
Chen Chuan contemplated the situation and believed that the Fourth Exam Site was indeed influenced, but he wasn't so sure about the others. He suspected that someone in the higher-ups of the school might have had a hand in it.
Connecting this to the morning's events, he could make some deductions.
Shen Shao spoke up, "If you ask me, the examinees who came after you should be grateful to you."
But Chen Chuan shook his head, "I only do what I believe is right. Their ability to stand there is their choice, and their persistence got them through the re-examination."
Hearing this, Shen Shao couldn't help but look at Chen Chuan with newfound interest and admiration.
To be honest, if he had done something like that, he would have been full of himself. But Chen Chuan remained calm, even though he thought it was too low-key. Still, he couldn't help but respect him.
Shu Han thought for a moment and said sincerely, "Chen Chuan, if you want to go far in the path of combat, you should pay attention to choosing a good tutor."
Chen Chuan nodded in acknowledgment. From the previous booklet, he already knew that Wu Yi Academy's classes were generally divided into three types: open classes, tutorial classes, and invitation classes.
Open classes were available to both Class A and Class B students, while invitation classes were only offered to exceptional students with a good reputation. However, the situation was more complex; sometimes there were restrictions, and other times there weren't. The most distinct type was the tutorial class.
The school would assign a tutor to Class A students. This tutor would be specifically responsible for guiding a particular student. The student's progress was closely tied to the tutor's abilities, which was one of the primary differences between Class A and Class B students.
Of course, tutors might not just teach one student. They could choose their students, and students could choose their tutors. This relationship wasn't fixed, and it wasn't unusual for students to change tutors every once in a while. After all, modern combat training had evolved beyond the traditional master-disciple model. It was about learning from each other's strengths and weaknesses, embracing a more inclusive approach.
Chen Chuan said, "Senior Shu, I don't know much about tutors. Do you have any recommendations?"
As a senior student, Shu Han was more familiar with these matters, especially when it came to his own seniors.
Shu Han slowly replied, "Well, I know of one excellent teacher. You should seek him out; he's currently in..."
But before he could finish, Shen Shao interrupted, "Shu Han!"
Shu Han turned to look at him. Seeing the seriousness in his expression, Shen Shao said, "It's up to Chen Chuan to decide how he wants to proceed. We don't need to dictate his choices; we just need to inform him about the tutors."
Shu Han took a breath and agreed, "You're right." After a moment's thought, he continued, "If I were to recommend tutors, I personally think there are three good ones.
The first is Qiao Lin Hu Qiao Shi, currently employed in the Combat Division. He is the grand-disciple of the first principal, Cheng Yun Bai, and a fellow disciple of our current principal, Yan Xiao Jing. However, his expertise leans towards traditional martial arts, and he doesn't hold modern martial arts in high regard. It's challenging to receive his personal guidance, and even if you choose his class, his disciples will teach instead. Only if you impress him might you be invited into his inner circle. I recently heard he found a good student, and while it's not guaranteed, it's not impossible. If you're interested, you should give it a try.
The second tutor is Sun Yun Chun, a lecturer in the Free Fighting Division. This teacher is highly skilled and ranks high within the division. He's proficient in various combat techniques and has almost no weaknesses. Moreover, he's excellent at nurturing students. Over the past decade, many outstanding Class A students have come from his guidance. Additionally, he's skilled at networking, so even if he's not a good fit, he can still connect you with many others.
The third tutor is Yan Xiao Jing, our principal's grandson, and the favorite student of the senior manager in the Recruitment Office. He's an expert in combat, especially with the spear, and is also proficient in free fighting and grappling. He's close to us in age, and his thinking isn't old-fashioned, so he might be the easiest tutor to get along with."
As Chen Chuan spoke, he turned to Chen Chuan and said, "The school has four main divisions: Free Fighting Division, Wrestling Division, Grappling Division, and Combat Division. I won't go into the smaller ones, but if we're talking about the most thriving, it's undoubtedly the Wrestling Division. Due to certain reasons, they have ample resources and attract many outstanding students each year. They are also very strong, and Zhong Wu is a renowned student from the Wrestling Division. So, I don't think you'll choose that division, Junior."
"As for the Grappling Division, it mainly focuses on joint manipulation techniques, similar to the Combat Division. It's the most popular choice among female students. The teachers there are actually quite good, but they tend to specialize in specific areas and lack versatility. However, finding a teacher who suits you best is ideal. Anyway, if you want any teacher's information, just ask the dorm supervisor, and they'll provide it."
Shen Shao added, "Take us, for example. We both follow Teacher Chi Youfu in the Free Fighting Division. He's a very honest person. If you need it, we can recommend you to him. Although the Free Fighting Division is relatively loose internally, it has the largest number of students in Wu Yi. Even the supervisor of the Administrative Office is one of our division's alumni."
Chen Chuan thought for a moment and said, "Thank you, Seniors."
Just then, the food arrived from the dining hall, with each portion being generously sized. Additionally, two tubes of nutritional gel were gifted to each person. The three of them focused on enjoying their meal without further conversation.
After finishing their meal, Chen Chuan asked, "By the way, Seniors, do you know where the school pharmacy is? I want to buy some Opening Practice Powder for a friend."
Shu Han replied, "In the current school pharmacy, you need a tutor's approval to get any medicine. So, Junior, you should find a suitable tutor first."
Shen Shao smiled and said, "That's why they say having a good tutor is essential. For tasks like yours, a tutor with connections can find many opportunities for you. But if you choose poorly, either they might not be willing and assign the task to someone else, or they might lack the resources to help you."
Chen Chuan nodded and said, "I understand." He pondered in his heart, thinking that he needed to resolve this matter as soon as possible.
After leaving the dining hall, the two seniors took him on a tour of the academy, familiarizing him with the campus environment and various facilities, before parting ways.
On his way back to the training ground, Shu Han suddenly said, "Don't you think he resembles the senior?"
"Where do you see the resemblance?" Shen Shao asked, "I think you're imagining things."
"I'm not," Shu Han denied, then added, "Actually, when I first heard about this junior and someone mentioned the senior in the same breath, I didn't take it seriously. But after interacting with him today, I think it was worth spending the morning with him."
Shen Shao shook his head and said, "He has his own path. Why are we worrying so much? He's him, and the senior is the senior. They're not the same person, so stop getting carried away."
Shu Han sighed and said, "We should observe him a bit more. After all, we've only just met, and we don't know what he's really thinking."
Shen Shao teased, "I think with your free time, you should either find a girlfriend or go and win back the girl who rejected you. Oh, wait, it was you who rejected her."
Shu Han suddenly clenched his teeth and started rolling up his sleeves, "It seems we can't avoid a fight today."
Since there were no classes in the afternoon, it was time for students to familiarize themselves with the campus. Chen Chuan toured the academy again and then returned to the dormitory building.
He obtained a list of all tutors from the dorm supervisor and then took the elevator back to his room. After settling his belongings, he stood by the floor-to-ceiling window, slowly flipping through the list.
Shu Han and Shen Shao had already provided quite detailed information. After some thought, he decided to try a few tutors, knowing he could switch if they weren't a good fit.
So, he returned to his desk, took a pen, and wrote down a few names. He then went to the internal communication box outside his door and placed the list inside. Soon, the dorm supervisor would collect it and deliver it to the respective tutors, who would then make their decisions.
