Chapter 41: Mission Assignment Office
Chapter 41: Mission Assignment Office
"Huh?!”
Kakashi Hatake's eyes widened in disbelief as he heard Feng Ye invite Might Guy to team up, his expression turning to one of dismay.
What kind of idea is it to team up with Guy?
Even if he wanted to help Guy, it didn't have to be like this. It was obvious that Guy had a tendency to make mistakes during missions, which was why he had been kicked out of other squads.
It would be better to undertake missions alone and then use part of the commission money to support or lend to Guy, rather than team up with him.
"Eh?"
Kurenai Yuhi and Lin were also taken aback by Feng Ye's proposal.
They hadn't expected him to suggest teaming up with Guy, and it was clear that he was going out of his way to help him, just because he was the father of a classmate?
That was... incredibly altruistic of him.
Perhaps Feng Ye could become the Hokage one day.
Unbeknownst to them, the same thought occurred to both Kurenai and Lin, and they didn't find it impossible. In fact, they increasingly felt that this might be the case in the future.
Guy, upon hearing Feng Ye's words, was also surprised. Instead of questioning what Feng Ye meant by a 'special situation', he hesitated, "Well... I might just cause trouble for you."
If it had been an adult, he would have readily agreed, grateful and promising to do his best. But with Feng Ye, a classmate of Kakashi's, he hesitated.
He was well aware of his own track record, often messing up during missions. Teaming up with Feng Ye, he feared that if he messed up, he would burden his junior.
"I trust you, senior."
Feng Ye said earnestly.
If he couldn't trust Guy, who could open the Eight Gates, then there were very few people in Konoha he could rely on. After all, Guy, with his Eight Gates open, was a force to be reckoned with, capable of pinning down the Third Hokage, Hiruzen Sarutobi, and Danzo Shimura at the same time!
Sensing the sincerity in Feng Ye's tone, Guy's nose twitched, and he felt his eyes well up with tears. Overcome with emotion, he stepped forward and hugged Feng Ye, "Thank you... thank you... My youth will continue to burn brightly!"
This scene caught the attention of several nearby ninjas, who gave them strange looks.
Kurenai and Lin's faces froze, managing only awkward smiles.
Kakashi, standing beside them, rolled his eyes and shrugged at Feng Ye, wearing an expression that clearly said, 'I told you so. You asked for this.'
"..."
Feng Ye's mouth twitched.
To be honest, he had wanted to dodge the hug, but he hesitated, and now he was in this awkward situation.
He was used to the strange looks people gave him because Kakashi often outshone him. But Guy's over-the-top gestures, his flamboyant language, coupled with the odd stares from those around them, were a deadly combination.
It was too much to handle!
Feng Ye subtly took a step back, freeing himself from Guy's embrace. He offered a somewhat bright smile, though it was tinged with embarrassment, "Senior, let's go find a mission then."
Undertaking missions with Guy would be a valuable learning experience for him, especially if the situation didn't pose a significant threat to their safety.
While Feng Ye was aware of his own capabilities, he knew that theory and practice were two different things. Just like Kakashi, who, with his Eight Gates open, could have ended up finishing off Uchiha Madara with one final kick if it had landed on his head.
A slight miscalculation could not only fail to solve the problem but also create even more complications.
"Sorry... sorry... I got a little carried away..."
Guy seemed to realize that he had embarrassed Feng Ye and quickly apologized, wiping away the tears of emotion from his face with his sleeve.
Feng Ye took a breath, composing himself, then turned to Kurenai and the others, "Kurenai, Lin, I'll go with Guy-senpai to find a mission... Oh, and Kakashi, could you take these back?"
Serves you right for taking pleasure in others' misfortune!
Feng Ye shot Kakashi a sidelong glance. It was only natural to make good use of his little brother. He waved at Might Guy and began walking towards the Mission Assignment Office in Konoha.
...
For a ninja, missions and assignments were not only a means of survival but also their reason for existence, hence the utmost importance of the Mission Assignment Office.
The office was located on the first floor of the Hokage Building.
For any ninja wishing to undertake a B-rank mission or above, they would need to report to and receive approval from the Hokage, Hiruzen Sarutobi, himself. On the other hand, C-rank and D-rank missions were directly managed by the office's jonin, who would simply record the mission results in the ninja's personal file to be reported to the Hokage later.
"Still no D-rank missions, huh."
As soon as Might Guy entered the office, he made a beeline for the bulletin board displaying D-rank missions, only to find it barren.
D-rank missions typically involved tasks like finding lost cats or helping with potato digging, which were common during peacetime. However, with the looming war creating a tense atmosphere, even basic livelihood became a concern, leaving little room for such trivial requests.
Seeing the empty D-rank mission board, Might Guy turned his attention to the C-rank mission board.
"Hey, you again?!'
A jonin in charge of managing the missions sat beside the bulletin board, a hint of annoyance in his voice as he noticed Might Guy approaching. "If you're alone, there's no way I'm letting you take on a C-rank mission. That's the village's rule, and your previous team didn't want you anymore?"
Might Guy felt a twinge of embarrassment at those words and was about to respond when Feng Ye, standing beside him, calmly addressed the jonin.
"Excuse me... This man is now a member of my team."
"Hmm?" The mission jonin furrowed his brow, taken aback.
Feng Ye's mention of 'my team' was intriguing. Genin couldn't form their own teams; they could only join existing ones. Only chunin and above had the authority to form teams and act as squad leaders. This meant that the young man before him, with his silver-white hair, was a chunin. But the jonin was certain he had never seen Feng Ye come to accept missions before.
Wait a minute...
His silver-white hair...
The jonin stared at Feng Ye for a few seconds, his eyes narrowing as he recalled the Chunin Exams held a few months ago. Rumor had it that the only one who passed was a silver-haired boy.
"Are you that Kakashi Hatake?" he asked, a hint of uncertainty in his voice.
He hadn't met Feng Ye in person, but he had seen his personal information file, recalling that Feng Ye was supposed to be around ten years old. However, the young man before him appeared to be at least twelve or thirteen.
"Yes," Feng Ye nodded, providing his ninja identification number.
The mission jonin asked him to 'wait a moment' and quickly looked up the corresponding information, swiftly confirming Feng Ye's identity.
After verifying his identity, the jonin looked at Feng Ye with a mixture of surprise and curiosity. "According to the records, you're only ten years old. But you look much... older than that."
"I just grew up a little faster," Feng Ye replied casually, a slight smile playing on his lips. "So, can I take on missions now?"
The mission jonin's gaze flicked back and forth between Feng Ye and Might Guy, a peculiar look in his eyes. "Yes... but are you sure you want to team up with this ninja? He has the highest failure rate among genin for C-rank missions, and he has a record of making mistakes on multiple occasions."
