Chapter 404: It's Not That We Don't Want You to Go Out
Chapter 404: It's Not That We Don't Want You to Go Out
December 7, 2024
A few days later, in the morning.
After bidding farewell to his family, Jiang Cheng took the stairs and arrived at the first floor.
Just a few steps out of the main hall, a familiar voice called out from behind him.
"Little Brother Jiang!"
Jiang Cheng turned around.
An elderly man in his fifties was jogging to catch up.
It was Tian Mao, the oldest among the small circle of acquaintances.
"Yes, it's quite a coincidence to run into you on the day I'm heading to the Alchemy Chamber." Tian Mao smiled, his eyes crinkling, "Are you going to the Alchemy Chamber? Shall we go together?"
"Sure, let's go together."
Jiang Cheng smiled.
He hadn't seen this person in the elevator, but now he had met him after coming out, which implied something without needing to be said.
"Little Brother, you probably don't know that in a couple of days, we won't see Ding Lei anymore." Tian Mao sighed.
"Why?"
Jiang Cheng was taken aback.
"I heard he's already found a new employer. In a couple of days, he'll be leaving."
Tian Mao sighed again.
"Oh, I see."
Jiang Cheng echoed his sentiment.
He and Ding Lei had a bit of a connection.
It's natural for people to seek higher positions, just as water flows downhill.
Just like him, he had already made up his mind to leave this place.
"I heard he's going to the Gao Family. Although their influence can't compare to the Gu Family, they are willing to pay. I heard that just the commission for alchemy pills is fifty percent, which is much higher than here. Moreover, when refining pills, you don't have to worry about being monitored, and your skills won't be leaked out."
Tian Mao continued, then suddenly changed the topic, "Little Brother, do you have any thoughts about this? Rest assured, you can tell me, I won't tell anyone."
Jiang Cheng found this amusing.
This person truly treated him like a naive newcomer to the workforce.
Even in the corporate world, when it comes to changing jobs, you shouldn't tell your colleagues until the last moment, when you've signed a contract with the new employer.
Otherwise, most likely, it's like carrying water in a bamboo basket, and you'll end up in a situation where you can't stay in your original company and are forced to resign.
"Elder Tian, you've misunderstood," Jiang Cheng said as he walked, "I think staying here is pretty good. Whether it's the treatment, safety, or other aspects, it's many times better than when I was in the outer district. Except for the monotony of constantly refining pills in the Alchemy Chamber and wanting to go out for a stroll, there's nothing bad about it."
"Really?"
Tian Mao seemed a bit incredulous, "Little Brother, are you really, truly, not even a little bit dissatisfied?"
"So, Elder Tian, you think there's something I'm dissatisfied with?" Jiang Cheng asked in return.
"Ahem, Little Brother, don't tease me. I didn't say that."
Tian Mao quickly denied it, glancing around, and said, "I'm just speaking for your benefit. With your skills, if you went to other places, you could at least get a fifty percent commission. But here, it's only forty percent. Besides that, whatever benefits you enjoy here, other places would also provide. Of course, I know you've just arrived and your connections in the inner district are average. Fortunately, I have the contact information of many other influential families. If you're interested, I can help you inquire. It's just an inquiry, no harm done. If there's a real opportunity, then it's even better, right?"
"Thank you for your kind intentions, Elder Tian.
Jiang Cheng shook his head.
"I still think it's better to stay here. To be honest, I owe Big Brother Chang Lin a lot of money, and I must pay it back."
"And there's this?"
Old Tian was curious. "How much do you owe?"
Jiang Cheng hesitated, "I'd rather not say, but it's a considerable amount. I'll have to repay it slowly." He forced a bitter smile and shook his head.
"Alright, if that's the case, then we'll leave it at that for now. If you change your mind later, just give me a call." Old Tian was a little disappointed.
With only this information to report to Gao Ling, there wouldn't be much benefit.
But whether it was Jiang Cheng's excellent acting or his genuine thoughts, he couldn't detect any flaws.
The two arrived at the alchemy chamber and parted ways, each heading to their respective chambers.
Once inside his room, Old Tian eagerly initiated a communication with Gao Ling.
After listening to Old Tian's report, a smile appeared on Gao Ling's face.
For Old Tian, he feared that Jiang Cheng's presence here would diminish the importance they had previously enjoyed.
However, Gao Ling wished for everything to remain the same.
"Doesn't he have any complaints at all?"
"He does, but it's not much of a complaint."
Old Tian sighed, "He said that staying in the alchemy chamber all day is too boring, and he wants to go out for a walk."
"Hmm."
Gao Ling nodded slightly.
That was understandable. After all, in the few months since Jiang Cheng's arrival, he hadn't taken a single step outside the residential area, only strolling within it.
"Manager, before we parted ways, I specifically instructed him to call me if he changed his mind. Perhaps he might call me in a few days."
"Yes, if something like that happens, remember to inform me immediately."
"No problem, Manager." Old Tian hastily agreed.
After ending the communication, Gao Ling couldn't help but sigh. This kid was indeed an honest person.
If their roles were reversed, he would definitely have some complaints and might even consider finding another employer.
In reality, they also allowed others to job-hop, as those people mostly lived in the inner city. If they didn't permit job-hopping, who would dare to work for the Ancient Family after the news spread?
But Jiang Cheng was different.
Firstly, he had no background and was even wanted, making many enemies in the outer city. Secondly, they would never let go of such a cash cow, even if it meant resorting to harsh measures.
Two more days passed.
That evening, Jiang Cheng received a text message. After reading it, he deleted the message and put his phone back in his pocket as if nothing had happened.
The next day, late at night.
As usual, Gao Ling came to inventory the alchemy pills.
"Big Brother Gao," Jiang Cheng looked troubled.
"What's wrong, Little Brother Jiang? If there's something, just say it. I'll do my best to help you," Gao Ling smiled.
"Big Brother Gao, I've been here for several months, and I've been refining pills all this time. Even my family has never left. So, I want to take half a day or a day off to take them out for a walk and broaden their horizons."
"I see."
A look of difficulty appeared on Gao Ling's face.
"Little Brother, it's not that we won't let you go out, but Gu Changjun has people watching outside. If you go out, it'll be easy for him to discover you, and the consequences are unimaginable."
