Chapter 404: Do You Want to Hear Another Story?
Chapter 404: Do You Want to Hear Another Story?
"Another creator? Who? James? No, it can't be him. Then it must be Peter! He's still alive?!" After Ivan said this, Lupin's face showed a look of shock as he asked with great excitement.
The creators of the Marauder's Map were only four people. Since Ivan said the information didn't come from Sirius Black, that left only James and Peter!
As far as he knew, James died under the Dark Lord's Avada Kedavra.
After the Dark Lord's downfall, Lupin had attended James and Lily's funeral and seen their bodies, so James couldn't have come back to life.
That left only Peter, who was rumored to have been "killed" by Sirius Black, but whose body was never found, as the only one who could still be alive!
"Hals, do you have any evidence to prove that Peter is still alive?" Despite some suspicions, Lupin still found it hard to believe this fact.
After all, if Peter was alive and well, why would he hide? Where had he been hiding all these years to avoid detection?
Lupin even suspected that Ivan might be lying or had been deceived by someone else!
"Proof! It's right here on this map!" Ivan pointed to the Marauder's Map, then drew his wand and tapped the blank parchment, uttering the password.
"I solemnly swear I've been up to no good!"
Delicate ink lines began to appear on the blank parchment, spreading like spider webs to cover every corner, eventually forming a dynamic map with names appearing one by one.
After so many years, hearing this familiar password, Lupin had no time for sentiment. His eyes were fixed on the map, and soon he saw a name that was all too familiar.
Peter Pettigrew!
"He really is alive, but how is that possible! And he's staying with Harry?" Lupin was thoroughly bewildered. As one of the creators of the Marauder's Map, he knew all too well the power of this object.
If the name appeared on the map, it meant that Peter was indeed in the Gryffindor dormitory, alive and well, and staying with Harry!
"As for what happened back then, I think you have some understanding. Would you like to hear another version of the story? One that I extracted from Peter and confirmed with Sirius Black!" Ivan said.
Lupin thought for a moment and nodded solemnly. When he confirmed that Peter was still alive, he realized that what had happened back then must have been far more complicated than he had imagined!
Seeing Lupin's cooperation, Ivan was a bit surprised. He had thought he would need to do more talking, or even defeat Lupin before he could explain.
But it made sense. Lupin knew more about Sirius Black and Peter than he did. In the original timeline, Lupin didn't even need to be told; he guessed the truth just from seeing Peter's name on the Marauder's Map.
With that in mind, Ivan had no more reservations and began to recount how Peter Pettigrew had betrayed the location of the Potter couple to Voldemort, leading to their deaths.
"Wait, you just said that Peter revealed James's location to the Dark Lord? But if I remember correctly, Sirius was the Secret-Keeper. James and Sirius told me this themselves!" Lupin frowned, interrupting Ivan, his voice filled with confusion.
"Yes, that was true at first! But Black felt he was too obvious, so he came up with a plan!
He would act as a decoy to attract the attention of the Death Eaters and the Dark Lord, while choosing another trusted friend to be the real Secret-Keeper!" Ivan explained.
"Is that person Peter Pettigrew?" Lupin sighed, having understood the situation.
It was no wonder that Sirius Black went after Peter after James was killed by the Dark Lord.
But thinking about it, Lupin had some doubts. Why didn't Sirius say a word when he was arrested by the Aurors from the Ministry of Magic, not even a word in his own defense?
In response to Lupin's doubts, Ivan thought about Sirius' behavior in the original timeline and speculated.
"He probably felt that he had misjudged the person and indirectly caused the death of his best friend, so he was disheartened and felt partly responsible. He was willing to accept punishment in Azkaban and the Ministry of Magic didn't give him a chance to explain, right?"
Lupin nodded thoughtfully. At that time, Sirius must have thought that Peter was dead, and with the Dark Lord's downfall, the only person left who was connected to James' death was Sirius himself.
Given his understanding of Black, it was normal for Black to accept punishment out of extreme guilt.
"By the way, Professor Lupin, why didn't you have Professor Dumbledore be the Secret-Keeper back then?" Ivan finally voiced the question he had been holding back for a long time.
Ivan had always found this point hard to understand. Since the Fidelius Charm was so powerful and had only one weakness—leakage by the Secret-Keeper—why not have Dumbledore keep the secret?
That way, Harry's parents wouldn't have died.
"Because a Wizard can only bear a limited number of secrets, otherwise it might cause conflicts. And at that time, your Dumbledore Headmaster already had a secret he needed to keep. Additionally, the Fidelius Charm has some additional restrictions", Lupin explained vaguely.
Was it because Dumbledore had to keep the Order of the Phoenix's headquarters a secret?
Ivan immediately understood this point.
"Alright, let's not talk about this anymore! Since we've found the real traitor, we can clear Sirius' name. We shouldn't delay; we should act now!" Lupin was visibly excited.
Since James' death, Lupin had thought he had lost his three best friends—two dead, one a traitor.
But now, he realized that Black was innocent, and the person who had betrayed James, Peter, was still alive. How could Lupin not be angry?
"Professor Lupin, you need to calm down!" Ivan had to interrupt Lupin's thoughts. "The case of Sirius' imprisonment is complex. The Ministry of Magic will likely interfere, so it's best to wait for Professor Dumbledore to return before making any plans!"
Don't think that the misjudgment of Sirius' case has nothing to do with the relatively new Minister, Fudge. The Ministry of Magic is not run by Fudge alone; he is merely a representative of a powerful interest group.
More importantly, if this matter leaks out, the entire Ministry of Magic's reputation will be damaged, and the angry Wizards won't care about Fudge's explanations.
Ivan clearly remembered the fate of Barty Crouch Jr. in the original timeline. To cover up the Ministry of Magic's scandal and the news of Voldemort's return, Fudge didn't hesitate to have a Dementor end Barty Crouch Jr.'s life with a kiss.
