Chapter 403: Sybrian's Unattainable Dream
Chapter 403: Sybrian's Unattainable Dream
Sybrian gazed upon the familiar royal capital of Yicolite, recalling why she was there.
Earlier, after school, Vivian wanted to change into casual clothes at the royal palace before going out with Sybrian for a stroll.
Sybrian waited on a bench for a moment and accidentally dozed off.
As she pondered, she looked up and saw a figure swiftly approaching from the palace—none other than her best friend and princess of the Herton Kingdom, Vivian.
"Sorry to have kept you waiting," Vivian apologized as she hurried over to Sybrian, holding a small gift box in her hand.
"It's fine, I took a little nap myself and didn't even realize the time passing," Sybrian shook her head, smiling in response.
The two friends strolled along the newly refurbished road by the canal, chatting and laughing.
"Ugh, I can't stand my brother sometimes, you know?" Vivian sighed continuously, unconcerned about maintaining the dignity befitting a princess. It seemed that she had just returned to the palace and heard something exasperating, prompting her to immediately vent to Sybrian. "You know what he said when Sophia asked him if he wanted to go see Geralt the Craftsman's art exhibition today?"
"What did he say?" Sybrian asked, tilting her head in curiosity.
"He actually said, 'Oh, that reminds me, I need to hurry and ask Duke Migaya if he's free. I've been wanting to go with him for a while.' Then he thanked Sophia and rushed off to find Duke Migaya. Sophia's face turned green with embarrassment," Vivian explained, clearly frustrated.
"I know we shouldn't laugh, but..." Sybrian tried to hold back her laughter as she listened to Vivian's story, her hand covering her mouth.
With these friends who had grown up together in the royal capital, Sybrian never felt lonely.
However, for some reason, she always felt as if these events had happened before, and she was merely re-experiencing them. It was a strong sense of deja vu.
Even so, Sybrian felt incredibly happy.
The afternoon sky was dotted with sparse clouds, and flocks of birds flew in the distance.
A gentle breeze blew in from the river, caressing their cheeks.
Suddenly, Sybrian caught sight of her reflection on the water's surface, and her eyes widened in shock. She had forgotten to disguise herself as human with illusion magic before leaving!
But to her surprise, Vivian was simply looking at her with a confused expression.
"Sybrian, what's wrong?" Vivian asked as she stepped closer.
"Don't you... realize that I currently have the appearance of a half-demon?" Sybrian asked, taking a step back and leaning against the stone railing by the moat.
"Yeah, so what?" Vivian was even more confused.
Sybrian stared blankly at the river's surface, deep in thought.
In the Herton Kingdom, people did not discriminate against demons. Even if she walked around with her horns showing, no one would find it strange.
So, what was she afraid of?
"I was just thinking that perhaps everyone is only tolerating my half-demon identity because of my father, Duke Migaya. But..." Sybrian trailed off, as if she had been worrying about this for a long time.
Upon hearing this, Vivian laughed. "It doesn't matter. Having unique traits is nothing new in Yicolite. Don't worry about your demon features. There are all sorts of people in this world, and everyone has their own thoughts and opinions, but we still get along peacefully, don't we?"
As she spoke, the occasional noises, laughter, and music from the bards in the distance created an atmosphere of tranquil harmony.
Sybrian stared at Vivian, and after a while, she lowered her head, a faint smile tugging at her lips. This answer brought her immense joy, and she didn't want others to see her silly smile.
The two friends continued walking, and Yicolite presented a perfect blend of majestic architecture and vast natural beauty.
They eventually arrived at a bridge, where Vivian stopped and handed the gift box she was holding to Sybrian.
With a smile, Vivian said, "Happy birthday, Sybrian."
...
Back in the present moment.
Hellrom Prison, Level Negative Four.
Several figures who had just arrived stood still like statues, and one had even fallen to the ground.
Before long, the sound of high-heeled shoes clicking on the floor tiles drew closer. The owner of those shoes seemed to be walking slowly yet calmly.
In the entrance hall, a female figure dressed as a prison warden, with a nameplate that read "Selena," finally appeared.
She was unaffected by the barrier on this floor and remained conscious.
However, her approach seemed to be more out of curiosity than a desire to help the five people before her. A mocking smile played at the corners of her lips as if she had discovered some intriguing little mice.
She stood before Sybrian, the apparent leader of the group, observing her expression and the magical fluctuations caused by the Negative Four Layer barrier.
Seeing Sybrian so engrossed in her dream, Warden Selena shook her head and smiled.
"What a cute little thing... I wonder how much blood would flow if her scars were torn open?"
...
Sybrian strolled along the cobblestone path by the river, with the ancient buildings and dark shadows of the quartz walls reflecting a deep silver and black.
After bidding farewell to Princess Vivian, she set off on the familiar path back home.
Passing by Yicolite Academy on the way from the Yicolite Palace to the Duke of Alancar's mansion, she knew she was almost home.
As she walked, a sweet aroma wafted toward her, carrying hints of fruit and pastry.
"Indulge in desserts so delicious they'll make your cheeks hurt! Meow!"
The repeated broadcast from the magic conductor echoed through the streets, accompanied by the constant ringing of wind chimes hanging from the eaves of a nearby shop.
Sybrian looked in that direction and saw a wooden house with a rustic charm.
She paused, considering whether to buy some treats.
"Hmm."
Sybrian rubbed her stomach, realizing she didn't actually crave sweets that much.
Neither she nor her father had a sweet tooth.
Thinking about this, Sybrian attributed her sudden desire for sweets to the dream she had just experienced, where she hadn't gotten to eat any desserts.
Shaking her head, she decided against buying anything from the shop and continued on her way with determination.
Just a few steps past the shop, a voice suddenly called out to her from behind.
"Sybrian."
It was a female voice she didn't recognize.
Perhaps it was because of Sybrian's distinctive appearance, with her silver hair tied back with a red ribbon, or maybe the caller was just very familiar with her.
Sybrian turned around and spotted two figures standing in front of the wooden house she had just passed.
One was a silver-haired woman who looked exactly like the portrait of her mother on her bedside table.
Beside her stood a gentle-looking man with an otherworldly handsomeness that made it hard to discern his true emotions.
This moment felt like an eternity.
Sybrian's eyes stung with unshed tears, and she didn't know why she felt like crying.
