Chapter 402: The Golden Burial
Chapter 402: The Golden Burial
As soon as they left the port, Lu Jiaxin caught sight of Nie Zhan.
Jian Shanzi, who was observing Nie Zhan, introduced him with a smile, "Shanzi, this is my partner, Nie Zhan. Just call him Mr. Nie. Ah Zhan, this is my second cousin's son, who has now been adopted by my father."
Lu Shan knew that Lu Jiaxin had found herself a partner in Hong Kong, and that this partner came from a wealthy family—a well-known tycoon in Hong Kong. However, he had never expected that this partner would not only be rich but also remarkably handsome.
Lu Jiaxin got into Nie Zhan's car, while Shanzi joined Wang Lin and the others in their vehicle.
After the cars set off, Nie Zhan asked, "How was the trip this time?"
Lu Jiaxin didn't hide anything from him and briefly recounted what had happened in Dingjia Village. After finishing, she scoffed, "It's laughable that they thought such tactics could intimidate me."
The longer she stayed away, the more she rejoiced in her decision to leave for Hong Kong. Had she remained on the mainland, she would have been shackled by moral constraints even in her business endeavors.
Frowning, Nie Zhan said, "Don't go back there in the future."
Lu Jiaxin shook her head. "It's impossible not to go back. Auntie Xiu Xiu really enjoys the environment in Sigou City. She's so content there that she doesn't want to return. If anything comes up, I'll still need to go over."
Nie Zhan was surprised. "Why would she want to stay in Sigou City for retirement? The medical conditions there are far inferior to Hong Kong, and life isn't as convenient."
Lu Jiaxin described Gu Xiu Xiu's daily routine: "In Hong Kong, because of her illness, she feels embarrassed to go out even when she's lucid. In Sigou City, no one knows her, so she doesn't have as many worries. Moreover, the prices and labor costs are lower there. Although she hires more people and often goes out shopping, her expenses are still much lower than in Hong Kong."
If they were talking about young people, they would definitely prefer to stay in Hong Kong, where the environment, wages, and opportunities were better. However, the elderly tended to prefer what they were more accustomed to.
Hearing that Gu Xiu Xiu was happier staying on the mainland, Nie Zhan thought it was just as well for her to remain there.
Lu Jiaxin asked about Nie Manlin, "Does your grandfather and the rest of the Nie family know about her dating a dentist?"
"They know. She told my aunt herself."
Lu Jiaxin furrowed her brows. "If I'm not mistaken, she's still not divorced from her previous husband, right?"
Secretly dating someone while still married was different from openly announcing it to everyone.
Nie Zhan said, "She's divorced. The procedures were completed five days ago. Adultery during marriage—the Nie family couldn't bear that disgrace. My grandfather sent someone to find him, and he agreed to the divorce for three million yuan as compensation."
Lu Jiaxin didn't know what to say.
Nie Zhan remained calm as he said, "She doesn't want the two children she had with that man. Grandfather said that the three million yuan is considered alimony for the children."
Lu Jiaxin sighed. "Your grandfather is truly lucky to have lived to this age peacefully."
Having such a daughter who lacked responsibility and was obsessed with romance, it was a testament to his mental fortitude that he hadn't been angered to death. However, upon reflection, it was a consequence of their shared past. Back then, the two sisters had been reckless and carefree because they were daughters, and now they were reaping the consequences.
Nie Zhan couldn't control Nie Manlin, nor did he want to: "Jiaxin, when we have children in the future, let's love and cherish them."
Upon hearing this, Lu Jiaxin deliberately said, "Nie Zhan, I'm afraid of the pain, so I don't plan on having children."
She didn't reject marriage, and by extension, she didn't reject having children. However, this had to happen naturally and not because she was pressured to do so.
Nie Zhan hadn't expected her to say that, but it wasn't a big deal: "If you don't want to have children, then don't. Several of my senior brothers have chosen to be DINKs, and they're living very comfortably."
He was quite open-minded, and she liked that about him.
Soon, they arrived at their destination. According to custom, Lu Jiaxin had to wear mourning clothes and kneel by the side. She had no intention of challenging this custom, so she followed the old rules and knelt, dressed in mourning. Because the sun was scorching, Zhang Sining held an umbrella over her as she knelt.
Shanzi knelt with her and hesitated when he saw the umbrella, "Cousin, is it inappropriate for us to kneel under the umbrella?"
Lu Jiaxin didn't think there was a problem, "It's so hot under the sun. If we kneel at noon, we'll get heatstroke. My mother loved me so much that she definitely wouldn't want to see me suffer from heatstroke."
Shanzi didn't say anything more after hearing this.
Moving the corpse into the coffin was a delicate and time-consuming task. Considering the hot weather, Lu Jiaxin had hired two additional goldsmiths to speed up the process.
After placing the bones in the coffin, several strong men slowly carried it to the prepared grave and began filling the pit with soil. Lu Jiaxin followed the feng shui master's instructions, bowing and kneeling as required throughout the process.
After the coffin was buried, they still had to build the tomb and erect a tombstone.
The sun was like a furnace, capable of roasting a person. Seeing that Lu Jiaxin's face had turned an unnatural shade of red, Nie Zhan immediately wanted to take her back.
Lu Jiaxin drank a lot of cooling drinks, but after being exposed to the sun for so long, she felt dizzy. Not wanting to push herself, she asked Shanzi, "Are you coming back with us or staying here?"
Shanzi also felt the heat, but he was used to working in the fields during the hottest days of summer, and there were cooling drinks available: "Cousin, I'm fine. You go back and rest first!"
"If you can't take the heat, go home immediately."
"Okay."
As soon as she got into the car, Lu Jiaxin took a Pure Jade Qi Pill and leaned on Nie Zhan. Seeing her like this, Nie Zhan was worried, "Jiaxin, let's go to the hospital."
Lu Jiaxin still felt uncomfortable, but since she had already taken medicine for heatstroke, she didn't want to go to the hospital, "Let's go home first. If I still don't feel well after a nap, then we'll go see a doctor."
Nie Zhan couldn't persuade her otherwise, so he had no choice but to take her home first.
After Lu Jiaxin took a shower, she went straight to bed.
Seeing Nie Zhan sitting by the bed, Lu Jiaxin advised, "You've been accompanying me under the sun for most of the day too. Go back to your room and rest as well."
Nie Zhan didn't want to leave. He was afraid that Lu Jiaxin would endure any discomfort and suffer in silence, "You sleep. I'll stay here with you. If you don't feel well, I can send you to the hospital immediately."
Lu Jiaxin had felt dizzy and nauseous earlier, but she felt much better now. However, seeing Nie Zhan's concern, she didn't refuse.
When Lu Jiaxin woke up, she found that it was already dark.
Nie Zhan asked with concern, "How are you feeling now? Are you still uncomfortable?"
Lu Jiaxin smiled and rubbed her flat stomach, "I'm fine, just very hungry. I could eat a whole cow right now."
Hearing this, Nie Zhan's stomach also rumbled in response. After Lu Jiaxin finished washing up and changing her clothes, the two of them went downstairs for dinner.
Lu Shan had returned before dark and knew that Lu Jiaxin was sleeping, so he didn't want to eat first. But when he saw the two of them coming downstairs together, his heart skipped a beat. However, remembering that Lu Jiaxin had been unwell when she returned, he thought that he might be overthinking things.
