Chapter 401: Lanchi's Path to Becoming a Great Demon
Chapter 401: Lanchi's Path to Becoming a Great Demon
After a brief moment of heavy silence, Corentin, the prison officer, had completely adjusted his mindset and emotions.
Putting his anxiety and panic aside, he focused on the task at hand, his movements still slightly stiff but gradually becoming more orderly. The atmosphere in the office also began to ease and turn harmonious.
The three Resurrection Priests remained by Corentin's side, like professional debt collectors, their gaze unwavering until he completed the task at hand.
"I'm handling everything as fast as I can. Please rest assured," Corentin said, his head bowed as he carefully signed and stamped various documents, ensuring that every detail conformed to the regulations. His speech quickened, conveying his plea for their patience.
After giving these intern prison guards a special evaluation, he added a note: "The interns are exceptionally outstanding. By their request, I will make an exception and allow them to enter the inner prison."
Corentin quickly handed the documents to the three Resurrection Priests.
The priest took them and promptly brought them to Hyperian, presenting them with both hands.
"Your Excellency Miriam, please have a look," Bass Tian said in a low voice, requesting her approval.
"No problem," Hyperian said, her voice thick with unshed tears as she took the documents and checked them.
The priest respectfully took the documents back and returned them to Corentin, instructing him to enter the information into the magic instrument connected to the Helrom Prison's barrier.
Hyperian bore witness to it all.
It was indeed a relief.
She even understood how easy it was to be a high-ranking figure in the Protoss Empire's version of the Resurrection Church.
But she felt that even setting aside the fact that she was a priestess of the Church of the Goddess of Fate, the graduation internship topic shouldn't have involved coercing a department head and ordering him around.
She hoped that the Ice Snow Witch would be willing to listen to her explanation later.
Two minutes passed.
"Everyone, the formalities are complete. We can move now," Corentin announced after finishing the procedure. He stood up, his posture slightly stiff, and personally invited the interns to leave.
When addressing Hyperian, his attitude was almost like seeking guidance from a superior.
After all, the three bullies obeyed her commands, and the very troublesome black-haired, green-eyed girl was also led by her.
It was clear that Miss Miriam Milford was the leader of this group of ruffians.
"Take us to the teleportation hall," Hyperian said, not feeling like talking much at the moment.
"This way, please," Corentin gestured for the interns to follow him and then led them through the corridors of the prison.
The corridors were deep and quiet, with scrolls and lighting fixtures hanging on the walls, emitting a soft glow that illuminated their path.
Corentin walked ahead, occasionally turning back to ensure the interns were keeping up, and inadvertently revealing a friendly attitude, offering small tips about Helrom Prison or simple greetings.
While his efforts might not completely erase the previous embarrassment and discomfort, this change in attitude at least demonstrated his attempt to make amends.
"...'
This only made Hyperian feel more tormented.
She believed that the Ice Snow Witch, who was watching her from the high-latitude space, was also going through agony and might even be questioning her life choices, wondering if the disciple she had personally cultivated could possibly be like this.
Soon, the group arrived at the prison's teleportation hall.
In the center of the hall on the lower level was a gigantic void teleportation gate. The deep gray mineral crystal-like door frame was carved with ancient mysterious runes, and the deep purple mirror in the center shimmered with a mystical and hallucinatory light.
Corentin, the prison officer, walked up to the steps before the teleportation gate and took out his private key crystal from his inner coat pocket.
He gently embedded it into the control panel next to the gate, and as the key made contact with the slot, the light on the gate brightened with a slight vibration.
"If you go down normally, you only need to complete the assessment on Level Minus Three to choose to leave. If you go straight down to Level Minus Four, you'll have to go all the way down to Minus Six before you can exit the prison safely. And the prisoners and prison officers in the lowest three levels are not normal folks; even Warden Bakus wouldn't dare to set foot there lightly. I've made the risks clear to you, and if anything happens to you, I've done my part to warn you."
Corentin the prison officer specially emphasized this to them once again, and after observing their reactions, he recorded this segment using a recording crystal.
The outer layers of the Helrom Prison, from Minus One to Minus Three, and the inner layers, from Minus Four to Minus Six, were essentially like two different prisons.
Starting from Minus Four, even without coming into contact with the prisoners, just being on that level posed extreme danger to one's life.
"Understood."
Hyperian nodded in response.
Long before she came to the Protoss Empire, the Ice Snow Witch had told her about why the levels housing the three Great Demon tribes were extremely dangerous.
The bottom three levels of the Helrom Prison used to be forbidden areas in the ancient Demon World, used for the important ritual of the "Great Demon Trial." Every once in a while, the magical formations and prisoners of these three levels would be exchanged and transported, so one could only find out what awaited them from Minus Four to Minus Six upon entering.
The only certainty was that they would all be miracles created by the ancient Demon World's magical formations.
The Ice Snow Witch believed that as Ifathia's daughter and a member of the Evil Demon tribe, Hyperian's aptitude should be exceptional.
Although the danger of Helrom Prison had been reduced by more than ninety percent after its renovation, and prison officers entering it would no longer encounter the extreme dangers of the ancient Demon World's rituals, one could still trigger a Great Demon Trial if they insisted on courting death.
As long as a demon could, on their own, meet the extremely harsh conditions, pass a Great Demon Trial, or gain the allegiance of a Great Demon, they would obtain a soul imprint of a title.
There were nine fixed title imprints belonging to the nine Great Demon Trials.
And whenever a Great Demon obtained their unique title, they would have the opportunity to bestow a title imprint upon another demon.
A hundred years ago, there were a total of nine different Great Demon Trials in the Demon World. Now, after their defeat, they have been split up and scattered to several locations, with Levels Minus Four to Minus Six of the Helrom Prison being reconstructed from three of those trials.
The rest were either destroyed or lost.
Of the nine trials, four tested one's character, four tested one's martial prowess, and one required the acknowledgment of the Ancestral Demon Souls.
Obtaining three imprints, with at least one from a character trial and one from a martial trial, would allow a demon to become a Great Demon, causing other ordinary demons to submit to them, and their innate demonic magic would unlock the path to ultimate power.
If the three imprints included the Ancestral Demon Souls trial or the acknowledgment of the current Demon King, they would further receive a unique title.
Otherwise, even if they became a Great Demon, they would be an unrecognized "Nameless Great Demon."
With six imprints, a demon's features would also undergo a transformation, signifying their qualifications approaching that of a Demon King.
Any demon that obtained nine imprints was known as a Quasi-Demon King, and if there were no other competitors in the same era, they would become the Demon King.
Only the Demon King possessed the ability to command and empower other demons.
