Chapter 40: Salandit, Move In!
Chapter 40: Salandit, Move In!
It was lunchtime.
Naoki propped his chin on his hand as he watched the Pokemon before him enjoy their meal.
Vanillite and Cutiefly ate just as delicately as always, chewing slowly and taking small bites.
On the other hand, Gurdurr and Throh were as boorish as ever in their eating habits.
After polishing off several large bones, Gurdurr picked up the bowl of black truffle porridge and gulped it down, reminding Naoki of someone trying to swallow a large date whole.
"It's a shame Gurdurr and Throh can't produce milk."
Watching this, Naoki couldn't help but feel a bit disappointed.
While Vanillite could spray cream, it wasn't the same as milk; it was like the difference between water and ice.
As for Cutiefly, it produced olive oil, which had nothing to do with milk.
In the afternoon, Kiri arrived on time with the construction team.
Naoki informed her of the location he had chosen beforehand, then rode off on Gurdurr toward Big Pot Lake.
Today, he wasn't going fishing; instead, he wanted to check on Yoosuke and the five Salandit.
Seeing that Naoki didn't have his fishing net or rod, Yoosuke looked a bit taken aback.
"Not fishing today?" he asked.
Naoki shook his head. "It's important to relax once in a while."
"That's not what you told me a few days ago," Yoosuke teased.
"Well... I've saved up enough money for the Pokemon cottage, so I thought I'd take a break until the construction is finished," Naoki explained.
"I see!" Yoosuke said, wiggling his eyebrows. "I have some good news for you, too!"
Naoki was taken aback. "Oh?"
Yoosuke turned and clapped his hands. "Everyone, come out!"
As his voice echoed, the five Salandit scurried out of the cave, huddling together.
"Sal! Sal!" they chirped.
Yoosuke smiled. "They've made their decision. They want to leave this place and live with you on your ranch!"
Hearing this, Naoki was delighted. "Really?"
Yoosuke didn't answer; instead, the Salandit replied in unison, "Sal! Sal!"
Naoki was overjoyed. "That's wonderful!"
"What are you waiting for? Get out your Poke Balls and catch them already! They've been looking forward to this for a long time!" Yoosuke urged.
"Oh, right!" Naoki quickly reached into the pocket of his blue work jumpsuit and pulled out five Poke Balls.
He crouched down and placed the Poke Balls on the ground. The Salandit lined up and took turns stepping forward, gently touching their heads to the Poke Balls. Their tiny bodies transformed into red beams of light that were sucked into the Poke Balls.
The Poke Balls wobbled a couple of times before becoming still.
Soon, the second and third Salandit were caught, and finally, the last one. Naoki held the five Poke Balls in his hand, his heart filled with joy.
"Congratulations!" Yoosuke said with a smile.
Naoki carefully put away the Poke Balls and thanked Yoosuke. "Actually, I should be thanking you for all your help these past few days."
Yoosuke waved it off. "It was no trouble. I needed to investigate the Pokemon ecosystem in this area anyway. By the way, have you been checking on that Aerodactyl at night?"
Naoki nodded. "Yes, Gurdurr and I would drop by when we were fishing."
"But... it's been like the first time we met. It doesn't pay any attention to us. It just sighs and leaves, as if it doesn't like being disturbed," Naoki said.
Yoosuke stroked his chin thoughtfully. "I see."
He shared his own findings as well.
"Based on my investigations, there aren't any Aerodactyl near Big Pot Lake. Considering that it flies here from the Cipatia Sea and then returns to the depths of the sea, I suspect its nest isn't in this area but somewhere in the distant ocean.
He asked, "By the way, Yosuke, have you heard of the legend of the 'Huge Shadow on the Ocean'?"
"No," Yosuke replied curiously. "What is it?"
Naoki explained, "It's said that in the depths of the ocean, there's a Dragonite of monstrous size, towering several dozen meters tall. It roams the seas, wailing like a beast."
Yosuke was shocked. "A Dragonite that's dozens of meters tall? How could such a Dragonite exist? Only in the monster movies produced by Pokemon Hollywood!"
"Never mind, then," Naoki said, seeing Yosuke's disbelief.
But Yosuke wasn't dissuaded. Instead, he continued thoughtfully, "However, I have heard another rumor related to Dragonite. Do you want to hear it?"
"Hmm?"
Yosuke didn't keep him waiting. "It's said that in the vast ocean, there exists an isolated island inhabited solely by Dragonite."
"There was once a traveling fleet sailing on the sea. They encountered a terrible storm, and one of the survivors, a man, clung to a piece of the ship's wood and drifted in the ocean. A Dragonite rescued him and brought him to that island—a sanctuary belonging to the Dragonite."
"That's entirely possible," Naoki said.
After all, most Dragonite were kind-hearted Pokemon.
Wherever they were, stories abounded of them rescuing people or Pokemon from drowning in the sea.
If a ship were caught in a storm, Dragonite would guide it to the shore. That was why many ships sailing the high seas would have a statue of a Dragonite at the bow, praying for a safe journey.
A question arose: Could that Dragonite have come from the Dragonite Island?
At that moment, the same question popped into both Naoki and Yosuke's minds.
They exchanged a glance, and Naoki saw the excitement in Yosuke's eyes. "Do you think such an island truly exists in the ocean?" Yosuke asked, his eyes sparkling with interest.
An island unique to the world, inhabited solely by Dragonite—what an exhilarating thought!
"It should exist, right?" Naoki thought back to the anime, where Ash had visited such an island and even caught a Garchomp there.
That Garchomp had later evolved into a huggable Dragonite, helping Ash become the Champion of the Pokemon League.
Hearing this, Yosuke grabbed Naoki's shoulder, his eyes shining with anticipation.
Naoki jumped a little, startled.
"Naoki, let's go on an adventure together!" Yosuke exclaimed, his eyes gleaming with excitement. "An island inhabited only by Dragonite! Just imagine seeing that with your own eyes..."
Naoki pushed his face away, exasperated. "You don't even know the exact location of that island."
Yosuke's face fell. "Yeah, you're right."
But he quickly regained his enthusiasm, his whole body buzzing with energy. "But I won't give up! As long as I keep traveling, one day I'll find that Dragonite Island!"
"Good luck!" Naoki encouraged him, then waved goodbye. "I should get going."
"Where are you off to?" Yosuke asked.
Naoki tucked away the Poke Balls containing the Saltrock Pokemon and looked at the other empty Poke Balls. "I'm going to see if I can catch some other Pokemon to bring back to the ranch."
Perhaps a riding sheep or a Tropius...
