Chapter 4: The Unusual Bandit?
Chapter 4: The Unusual Bandit?
March 31, 2017
Lu HaiKong's journey to Wang DaMaZi's bandit hideout wasn't too far, especially after he had dealt with that one bandit. Following the path upwards for about three to four kilometers, he arrived at the very building he had seen earlier.
The mountain path was quite challenging, and with Lu HaiKong carrying the wild vegetables and rabbits, his journey became even more strenuous. Fortunately, after his recent job change to a bandit, his stats had doubled, and his once refugee-like physique was now more robust. It was unlikely that this guy could make it to the hideout within the given time.
What caught Lu HaiKong's attention along the way was the presence of many bandits similar to the first one he had encountered. They all squatted by the grass, waiting foolishly. From the first bandit he met to the hideout, Lu HaiKong saw six or seven groups, and the number of bandits increased as he got closer. The last group even had around ten bandits squatting, and there were also a few archers among them.
Thankfully, due to Lu HaiKong's new job as a bandit, these guys ignored him as if he was invisible, allowing him to reach the hideout and meet the leader, Wang DaMaZi.
It must be said that people in the game world were quite simple. True to his name, Wang DaMaZi, the leader of the bandits, was indeed covered in scars, making Lu HaiKong, who had a bit of trypophobia, feel a bit uneasy.
What intrigued Lu HaiKong was that Wang DaMaZi seemed a bit smarter than the other bandits. Unlike the bandits he had encountered earlier, who only knew how to shout, "Hey, refugee, leave your money and go," these guys weren't that dumb. But in Lu HaiKong's eyes, they were still pretty foolish.
After meeting Lu HaiKong, Wang DaMaZi immediately threw seven or eight skill books onto the table, allowing him to choose one. All the skill books looked the same, and Wang DaMaZi didn't let Lu HaiKong flip through them. So, he randomly picked one and opened it, only to find it was 'Basic Axe Technique'. Lu HaiKong didn't mind and learned the skill right away.
After Lu HaiKong learned the skill, Wang DaMaZi said, "From now on, we're brothers. Let's drink and feast together." Lu HaiKong's mouth watered at the thought, and just as he was about to ask if he could eat meat right away, Wang DaMaZi shooed him out, saying, "Go and get to know the hideout."
Not being able to eat meat immediately dampened Lu HaiKong's mood. He had initially planned to ignore the task, but when he saw that the reward was a basket of steamed buns, his eyes lit up, and he immediately took action.
Thus, a foodie's motivation was easily ignited.
'Familiarize with the Hideout'
Task Description: As a new recruit, your first task is to familiarize yourself with the hideout. Go, young one, start from the 'Assembly Hall', then to the 'Bandit Training Ground', followed by the 'Bandit Barracks', and finally, end at the 'Bandit Canteen'.
This was clearly a beginner's task, and Lu HaiKong set off with the wild vegetables on his back. Although he was eager for the steamed buns, he took the task seriously. After all, if there were no surprises, this would be his home from now on, and he should get to know it well.
The Assembly Hall was where Lu HaiKong had just come from. Besides being Wang DaMaZi's residence, there was also a large task board outside the hall, filled with tasks meant for bandits like Lu HaiKong.
The tasks on the board were diverse, ranging from physical training, martial arts practice, to chopping wood and fetching water. Lu HaiKong glanced at them without much interest. As a handsome bandit, he had no time for such menial tasks. Bandits should be out there robbing and looting, not chopping wood!
The 'Bandit Training Ground' and the 'Bandit Barracks' were connected buildings. The training ground was for practice, but Lu HaiKong found it almost empty. There were various weapons on display, mostly wooden, and several archery targets in the lower right corner.
Intrigued, Lu HaiKong, who had never shot an arrow before, ran over to the targets. He soon discovered that while the other facilities were free, the archery targets required payment. Each target cost 100 copper coins for three hours, and with only 7 copper coins on him, Lu HaiKong could only stare at the targets and flee from the old man's disapproving gaze.
It was odd to say the least, but the bandits in the bandit camp, including the dim-witted Wang DaMaZi, were all a bit simple-minded. However, an old man watching the archery target in the training ground was an exception; he seemed cunning and sharp, not at all like the typical monsters.
Initially, Lu HaiKong was delighted to find someone who wasn't a fool in this group of simpletons. After all, humans are social creatures, and a world full of idiots would be no fun. Of course, the righteous LuHaiKong would never fantasize about the beauties in this world being as dim-witted as these bandits; no, never.
LuHaiKong eagerly approached an old man named Wang DaFu, but the old-timer completely ignored ZhaoLun, giving him a cold shoulder. With a disdainful look, he seemed to say, "Don't bother me, you broke bandit." From start to finish, LuHaiKong only received cold, dismissive glances.
After retreating from the old man, LuHaiKong took a quick glance at the 'Bandit Barracks', his future accommodation, and then headed straight to the 'Bandit Canteen' with his wild vegetables and rabbit.
Upon reaching the canteen, LuHaiKong's task was complete. After a quick tour, he gained fifty experience points and a basket of Xiaolongbao dumplings. Unlike before, LuHaiKong didn't rush out of the canteen; instead, he headed straight for the kitchen.
As he entered the kitchen, a 'mountain' of a man blocked his path.
"What the hell are you doing?" the man asked.
The man before LuHaiKong was a giant, standing at two meters tall and nearly one and a half meters wide. He held a gleaming cleaver, and his chubby face made him look like a butcher.
LuHaiKong swallowed nervously and raised his hand, showing the vegetables and wild rabbit. "I... I want to cook something."
The butcher's eyes widened. "Cook? Don't you know my kitchen is off-limits? And you want to use my kitchen to cook?"
"Wait, you said you want to cook? You can speak? You're not an ordinary bandit; you're an 'Unusual Individual', right?" The butcher realized LuHaiKong didn't seem like a typical bandit, so he quickly dropped his menacing act and asked curiously.
This old butcher, whose real name was Wang DaLi, also known as Wang Fat, was the head chef of the bandit canteen. Despite his intimidating appearance, he was actually a kind-hearted person. If one could get past his initial scare tactics, they'd see that this seemingly fierce individual was quite harmless.
LuHaiKong was a perfect example of this. After realizing Wang Fat's gentle nature, he insisted that the chef cook for him.
Making a dish for LuHaiKong wasn't a problem, but in the bandit camp, cooking had a set price, especially for 'Unusual Individuals' like LuHaiKong. For someone like him who required special treatment, each dish cost fifty copper coins, and the ingredients had to be provided at specific times. Even if Wang Fat wanted to help LuHaiKong, he couldn't break these rules.
After his tantrum yielded no results, LuHaiKong could only eat his dumplings while chatting with Wang Fat, the only person willing to talk to him.
Wang Fat was a simple man, and with few others in the camp to converse with, he was happy to chat with LuHaiKong, especially since he had finished his work for the day. He gladly shared some common knowledge about this world with LuHaiKong.
