Chapter 4: The Key to Success Lies in Seizing the Opportunity
Chapter 4: The Key to Success Lies in Seizing the Opportunity
After receiving the money, the middle-aged shopkeeper’s expression improved slightly. He asked if Luk wanted an additional service.
"Do you want me to hire a ninja to deliver the items to your home?"
"Thanks, but I’m out of money."
Luk patted his empty money pouch, feeling a deep sense of loss.
Upon hearing the words "out of money," the shopkeeper immediately lost interest, not even sparing Luk a glance.
Luk took a deep breath, sheathed his sword, and then his arm muscles bulged as he strained to pick up the leg bindings. His face contorted in pain, veins popping out as if he were summoning all his strength just to lift them.
"They’re so heavy."
Watching Luk struggle out the door, the shopkeeper shook his head. This was a classic case of someone who’d rather suffer now than admit to needing help. At his young age, he should be more careful with his back; he’d regret it when he got older.
A man’s back is important!
...
For Pirate Luk, a hundred kilograms was nothing compared to his usual training load. He bought the leg bindings mainly because they could be worn continuously. Such heavy and peculiar metal was rare in the world of pirates; even Seastone wasn’t that heavy.
After leaving the shop, Luk wiped away the nonexistent sweat, reflecting on whether his performance had been convincing.
Although the leg bindings weighed a hundred kilograms, their shape made them relatively easy to handle. As a robust young man who regularly worked with iron, he should be able to lift them... right?
Luk did a quick self-assessment, looked around, and found an unoccupied corner to put on the leg bindings. Instantly, his legs felt much heavier.
He waved his hands and twisted his body, feeling a strange disconnect between his upper and lower halves.
He needed to buy arm and torso weights to balance things out, he thought. But considering his empty wallet, he changed his approach.
Why not adapt to the imbalance as a form of training?
There was no rush, anyway. His personal funds were nearly depleted, and the money at home was controlled by his mother, with his father, as the head of the household, deciding where it went.
Thinking of his parents gave him a headache. Having secrets made living with his family inconvenient. He wasn’t a ninja, and his blacksmithing work was done at home, so he had to report every time he went out.
If only he could learn the Shadow Clone Jutsu, things would be much easier.
Ordinary clones were stiff and would disappear with the slightest touch, but the Shadow Clone Jutsu operated independently of the user’s consciousness and had some resistance to physical attacks. When the clones were dispelled, their memories and experiences returned to the user, making it one of the most practical jutsu.
The Shadow Clone Jutsu was a B-rank jutsu, so it wasn’t as strictly guarded. Because of its convenience, it was widely sought after by ninjas and had spread throughout the ninja world. Many Chunin knew it, and Jonin and above were almost certain to have it. Obtaining it wasn’t too difficult.
But it was still a registered jutsu in the village. Luk thought for a moment and realized there was no legal way to get it in the short term.
No problem. If legal means failed, he could always resort to illegal methods!
Seeing that it was still early, Luk calculated the time and guessed where the person might be. He turned and walked in the direction of the Death Forest.
...
The inner depths of the Death Forest were the site of the Chunin Exams and were home to dangerous beasts, so civilians were not allowed to enter. However, the outer areas were unrestricted and popular for family picnics and for students to practice their jutsu after school.
Luk walked to the river and kicked a nondescript tree a few times. After a few breaths, a deep male voice came from the tree.
"Rokken Senkai?"
"It’s me. Come down here." Luk kicked the tree a few more times, causing it to shake. A figure quickly descended and landed steadily on the ground.
The tall, lean figure had a head of spiky white hair, dressed in the attire of a shinobi, with the forehead adorned with a Konoha Village headband. One eye and half his face were covered by a mask, leaving the visible eye devoid of any luster.
There was no doubt that this was Kakashi Hatake, a renowned jonin of Konoha Village, and a man who could handle any situation with ease.
He was also Lu Ke's close friend.
...
Lu Ke and the previous Seventh Squad, including Kakashi Hatake, Obito Uchiha, and Rin, were all familiar, mainly because he would always lean in to brush faces.
After the White Fang's suicide, Kakashi hurried to comfort him, saying words of recognition and friendship to lift spirits during the darkest moments, becoming Kakashi's openly acknowledged friend.
He had hinted that they shouldn't go to the Spirit Bridge, but without sufficient reason, his words were rather obscure. During battles, he was often in the village, and the Seventh Squad was outside, unable to communicate in real-time, thus failing to change the course of history.
Even if he could change it, considering Madara and White Zetsu were always watching in the shadows, he wouldn't stop, and might even get involved.
Though O bito only considered him an acquaintance, who knew if Madara would use him as fertilizer.
Kakashi, like the original, was deeply affected.
Six years ago, on the chaotic night when the Nine-Tails rampaged, and both Futon Suigetsu and Kusuna died, the once talented Kakashi became the current dishearted version. Despite his diligent training, which could have placed him among the elite jo nin, he remained stagnant.
There was no way out. His father was dead, his best friend was dead, his girlfriend had stabbed herself, and his master and mentor were gone. For a while, Kakashi felt cursed, even growing distant from Lu Ke.
Under the normal timeline, it took until the Fourth Hokage's guidance for him to become a teacher leading students, with his strength beginning to fluctuate. Missing the crucial development period, he struggled to lead the Seventh Squad, becoming a prodigy at twelve, and facing challenges that were difficult to overcome, he was later defeated by his former comrade, "Itachi."
Despite Itachi being a wallflower, Kakashi leaned against the tree trunk, holding a book, the famous "Heavenly Close," his gaze landing on the sword at Lu Ke's waist. After a few seconds, he shifted his gaze, his tone indifferent.
"What's up?"
Lu Ke paused for a moment before deciding to be honest, "I want to learn the Shadow Clone technique."
I see you're thinking of eating shit.
Kakashi gave Lu Ke a look of disbelief, firmly refusing, "You don't have the capability to use the Shadow clone technique."
The Shadow clone technique, even at the B-rank, was one of the more challenging techniques, requiring precise chakra control to execute. Lu Ke first didn't have enough chakra to perform the Shadow clone technique, let alone to maintain it.
"How do you know I don't have the capability?" Lu Ke looked at Kakashi, his tone serious.
Kakashi was silent for a few seconds, tucking the book into his chest, his palm pressing against Lu Ke's chest, his brow unconsciously furrowing.
According to his perception, Lu Ke's current chakra reserves were slightly above the average for chunin, which was already impressive.
"You currently have a fifth of my daily chakra reserves in your body. How do you achieve that?"
Lu Ke nodded, finally determining his chakra reserves precisely.
0.2 chakra.
"I know my talent is lacking, so I squeeze out chakra every day until I pass out, consistently maintaining the current chakra levels for a decade."
Lu Ke said firmly, "People like us can only rely on ourselves."
