Chapter 4: Missing Out on a Hundred Million
Chapter 4: Missing Out on a Hundred Million
Natsu had no patience to wait for the Guild Master or Levy to return. The moment he heard that Laxus could help, he dragged him over immediately.
With the help of Laxus’s drawings, Mirajane’s gestures, and her gentle voice, Rod finally understood what they were asking.
However, he had never seen a dragon. He had only seen a spotted bear that looked like a pig and nearly got killed. Come to think of it, did dragons even exist in this world?
Rod pondered the magical possibilities and realized that the existence of dragons didn’t seem so strange.
Natsu was frustrated. “Mirajane, when is the old man coming back?”
Mirajane replied, “Tomorrow or the day after. The routine meeting usually doesn’t take too long.”
Natsu made his decision right away. “Happi, we’re not going to work these few days. We’ll wait for the old man to come back!”
The blue cat raised his hand in response. “Okay!”
Natsu strode over to a table and sat down. “Mirajane, I want the Flame Special!”
“Sure, right away.” Mirajane relayed their order to the kitchen.
“Natsu doesn’t mean any harm; he’s just a bit impatient.”
Mirajane knew why Natsu was looking for dragons, but the story was long and complicated. It was hard to explain the situation to Rod, so she tried to assure him that Natsu’s intentions were good.
Rod nodded. Although he didn’t know the specifics, it was normal for the protagonist of a shonen manga to be impulsive and hot-headed.
At that moment, the blue cat stood on the table and raised his hand. “Mirajane, I want a grilled fish!”
Rod’s eyes widened. The cat was talking!
Mirajane smiled. “Happi isn’t an ordinary cat.”
Rod nodded. In a world of magic, talking cats weren’t that surprising.
However, the tray that Lucy brought out from the kitchen made Rod’s jaw drop.
The tray held two plates and a cup. The food was recognizably shaped, but it was clearly still burning with intense flames!
This... This is really food?
Mirajane tried to explain. “That’s Flame Spaghetti, Flame Fried Chicken, and Flame Drink. They’re prepared using special methods.”
Watching Natsu grab the flaming food with his bare hands and stuff it into his mouth, Rod hesitantly nodded.
In a world of magic, it was normal for food to be a bit unusual.
Mirajane suspected that Rod might have misunderstood something. In reality, only Natsu ate this way in the entire guild.
During the time that followed, Rod met all sorts of strange people and witnessed some fascinating magic.
He even witnessed a fight, sparked by Elfman and Natsu, which eventually involved a quarter of the tavern.
When Elfman got into a fight, Mirajane just smiled and told Rod to step back a bit, doing nothing else.
Rod couldn’t help but question his judgment. Was Mirajane not as gentle as she seemed, just reserved around strangers?
He had thought that the guild of the protagonist would be lively, but it seemed to be a bit too lively.
...
Time passed in this atmosphere of both calm and chaos.
It wasn’t until the next day, Rod’s third day in this world, that things changed.
The Guild Master had returned.
And he brought a blonde handsome man with him.
Many of the girls gathered around, exclaiming, “It’s Hibiki from Blue Pegasus!”
“He’s the number one on the ‘Most Wanted Boyfriend’ mage list!”
“He’s so handsome!”
Hibiki raised his index and middle fingers, smiling gently as he greeted the girls, causing another round of screams.
A man in a green coat with glasses looked panicked and took the opportunity to sneak out of the guild during the chaos.
Mirajane, holding a tray, smiled warmly. “Welcome back, Guild Master. It must have been a tough journey.”
The people in the tavern greeted Makarov, and Natsu immediately darted over.
“Old man! You’re finally back. I have something to ask you!”
Makarov raised a hand to stop Natsu. “I have a pretty good idea what you want to ask, but it’s complicated right now. Just wait a bit.”
Natsu wanted to say more but, seeing the serious look on the Guild Master’s face, he just puffed up in frustration.
Makarov asked Mirajane, “How is the boy doing?”
“He’s called Rod, and his injuries have healed well. Communication is a bit challenging, but I’ve been teaching him the common language. It just needs some more time,” Mirajane explained.
“I see. Thank you for your efforts,” Makarov nodded. “I have a faster method. Take him to the infirmary first.”
Mira glanced at Hibiki, who was surrounded by the girls, and nodded. "Alright."
Rod followed Mira back to the infirmary, puzzled. Was it time to change his bandages?
Over the past two days, his injuries had healed at an incredible speed. Now, only a bandage on his forehead remained. Rod suspected that the medicine he was using was far from ordinary.
As he pondered, Makarov walked in with Hibiki.
Hibiki didn't hesitate for a second once he entered the infirmary. He immediately approached Mira and bowed elegantly:
"Are you Miss Mira? You are even more radiant than in the magazines! It's a pleasure to meet you. I am Hibiki from Blue Pegasus, and I would be honored if you would allow me to buy you a drink."
Mira cupped her cheek. "Now is not the time for such talk, is it?"
"Ah, you're right, my apologies." Hibiki dramatically knelt on one knee, extending a hand. "So, are you free tonight?"
Rod wasn't quite sure what was going on, but he felt this guy was pretty unique, even by Fairy Tail's standards.
Wait, there was someone in the guild who was a lot like him, but who was it?
Now wasn't the time to think about that. Rod stood up and bowed slightly to Makarov, speaking in somewhat stiff Common Tongue. "Thank you for saving me!"
Makarov smiled. "You're doing well with the language, but it wasn't me who saved you."
Rod looked puzzled.
Makarov's right hand suddenly stretched and grew, grabbing Hibiki and pulling him over.
"I didn't invite you here to harass our guild's girls."
Rod stared in shock at Makarov's hand. Was this Old Luffy? Or Old Choji?
Hibiki straightened his clothes and hair, looking as dashing as ever.
"I understand the mission. I need to help him master the basic Common Tongue as quickly as possible, correct?"
"That's right," Makarov nodded. "But make sure not to harm his body in the process."
Hibiki nodded. "Of course. With my magic, it's entirely possible. However, receiving a large amount of information at once might cause a headache for a short time. Is that acceptable?"
Mira relayed Hibiki's words to Rod and sought his opinion.
Use magic to quickly learn a language, but at the cost of a headache?
Rod nodded decisively. A few minutes of a headache with magic versus months of a headache from self-study? No contest. Better to get it over with quickly!
Makarov nodded. "Then let's begin."
Hibiki raised his hands, and a golden magic circle appeared below them, with a keyboard in the center.
As Hibiki's fingers tapped, several screens of magical light appeared in the air. Boxes and lines of text flashed by, eventually leaving only one screen.
Rod was dazzled. Was this really magic, or some kind of futuristic technology? It looked like a scene from a sci-fi movie.
Mira realized something. "Is this Ancient Script Magic? No wonder the Master called you."
Hibiki smiled. "Just to confirm, we only need the basic Common Tongue, right? Actually, I have 100 tips for chatting up girls and 80 ways to make them happy. Do you want me to teach those as well?"
Makarov waved his hand. "Please don't teach him that strange stuff."
"Such a shame." Hibiki pointed at Rod's forehead, and a golden light enveloped him.
Rod didn't realize what a wealth of knowledge he had just missed. All he felt was a surge in his head as a flood of information rushed in.
Pronunciation, writing, vocabulary, sentence structure...
"Aaaaaah...!!!"
The headache was even more intense than Rod had imagined, like being caught in a door. He clutched his head and screamed.
"Rod..." Makarov and Mira looked at him with concern, but the process was mercifully brief.
The golden light dissipated, and the keyboard and screen in front of Hibiki vanished. "It's done."
Rod fell onto the bed, staring blankly at the ceiling with his hands still on his head, gasping for breath. "Finally... it's over."
Mira praised him. "You said that very well."
"Huh?" Rod exclaimed in surprise. "I can understand what you're saying!"
