Chapter 4: Lanchi's Studious and Intimidating Demeanor
Chapter 4: Lanchi's Studious and Intimidating Demeanor
In the border city-state of South Montina, the cobblestone streets exuded an ancient and serene ambiance under the soft morning light.
Cardinal Lanchi strolled leisurely, his face lit up with a sunny smile.
With Talia's murderous intent resolved, a challenge that barely fazed him, he now made his way to his intended destination for the day—the Border City-State Library.
A place his past self would never have visited, but to the present Lanchi, it was like uncovering a treasure trove of knowledge.
Although the Border City-State Library couldn't compare to the grand libraries in large cities or the renowned Royal Library of the kingdom, it still housed many precious books not easily found elsewhere.
Lanchi had a plethora of books he was eager to consult, fueled by his insatiable curiosity.
The prospect of returning to a peaceful life filled him with anticipation. As long as he could keep Talia from killing him and prevent her from obtaining the crucial funds to initiate her plan to restore her country, he believed he could inadvertently bring peace to this world and make it a better place.
As for the meager allowance of 3 pounds a day that he had promised her, even if she stayed by his side until death, her dreams of restoring her country would amount to nothing.
Once she earned enough to cover her travel expenses and no longer had to endure the hardships of the road, she would likely grow weary of this mundane town and choose to leave in pursuit of her grand ambitions.
After all, she was different from him. Lanchi only wished for a simple life as a commoner, free and unburdened, while she harbored lofty aspirations.
Lanchi's thoughts wandered as he arrived at a bakery highly recommended by a maid. He purchased his breakfast for the day and continued walking towards the library, a paper bag of treats in hand.
The library wasn't too far from his home.
Even at his leisurely pace, it would take him only about thirty minutes to get there.
The shops along the street were already open for business, welcoming the day's customers. The enticing aromas of freshly baked bread and brewed coffee wafted along the cobblestone path.
Morning mist and a pinkish hue of dawn hung in the air beside the buildings, and verdant moss covered the winding roads, whispering tales of history and grandeur.
As he drew closer, the sound of church bells reverberated in his ears, their melody sacred and devout.
Every building that met his eyes seemed majestic and imposing.
Lanchi took a bite of his black truffle cheese croissant, savoring the crisp morning air.
Before he knew it, he had arrived at the Border Library.
In the days that followed, driven by his thirst for knowledge, he would become a familiar fixture in this place.
The massive structure boasted a grand facade, with a row of majestic stone columns standing tall atop a wide set of steps. The exterior walls were constructed from stone, weathered by the passage of time.
Stepping inside, he found himself amidst arched windows with intricate patterns along their edges, casting a soft glow within.
He made his way directly to the counter and swiftly obtained a library card.
Lanchi then ventured into the large reading room.
With the help of an indoor map, he located the section dedicated to legal literature and ran his fingers along the spines of the books, his eyes scanning rapidly as if reading a flowing stream.
Soon, he pulled out a hefty volume—
"The Hutton Kingdom Code"
He carried the book to a long table and sat down contentedly, ready to delve into its contents.
Now that he found himself in such a fantastical world, aside from gathering information and understanding the political landscape...
Most people would eagerly seek to uncover their unique abilities or attempt to learn magic.
But not Lanchi.
He intended to study the law.
While magic and power were undoubtedly important in this world, exemplified by the magic cards that could bestow unimaginable wealth and extraordinary abilities...
Lanchi was also fairly confident that he possessed a decent talent for card creation.
However, becoming an excellent card creator was not something that could be achieved overnight.
He still needed a vast amount of knowledge in magical engineering, as well as diligent practice and training.
For the time being, knowledge and wisdom were his means of survival.
Sometimes, understanding the law could mean the difference between a life sentence and a death sentence for your opponent.
Hence, he wasn't in a rush to delve into magic card research just yet.
He believed that the most important thing to do upon arriving in a new place was to thoroughly understand the local laws and regulations...
...or the "basic rules," so to speak.
And so, early that morning, Lanchi had made his way to the town's library and located the latest revised edition of "The Hutton Kingdom Code." He was now engrossed in reading it word for word.
Being the law-abiding person that he was, he would never do anything prohibited by the law.
...
Until the sun set in the west.
The evening sunlight streamed gently through the library windows, infusing the room with a tranquil ambiance.
Lanchi sat by the desk, his eyes roaming over the pages, his fingers gently flipping through the thin sheets of the book.
The orange-hued sunlight filtered through the glass panes, casting a soft glow on his focused face, adding a touch of gentleness and elegance to his features.
"Isn't that literary youth incredibly handsome?"
"Yes, he's so serious and focused. He's been sitting there reading law books all day. He's definitely a super nerd."
"Wait, isn't he the good-for-nothing heir of the Wilford family? The one with the terrible reputation, Lanchi Wilford?"
"Er... But you can tell that he truly respects the law. Maybe the rumors aren't entirely true!"
The girls at the counter whispered among themselves, stealing glances at Lanchi from time to time.
His smooth black hair and clear, emerald green eyes complemented the innate poet and painter aura he possessed. When he wasn't being a good-for-nothing, his entire being seemed to undergo a revolutionary transformation.
However, Lanchi, engrossed in his book, seemed oblivious to the passing of time and the irrelevant commotion in the library.
It was only when the light outside gradually dimmed that he became vaguely aware that the library was about to close for the day.
As he lifted his eyes from the pages, he finally felt a long-forgotten soreness in his eyes.
Looking up, he noticed that the library was now sparsely populated.
"Tomorrow, I'll look into the basics of magical engineering in this world," Lanchi muttered to himself as he marked his place in the codex with a bookmark and closed the book.
It was time to head home.
In addition to borrowing this unfinished codex, he had also compiled a list of books he wanted to borrow.
For example, there were a few books that had caught his eye while searching for the codex:
"Basic Characteristics of Cults"
"Preventing Brainwashing Based on Spiritual Magic"
"Anti-Fraud Cases in the Magical Engineering Department of the Hutton Kingdom"
After studying the kingdom's laws and regulations, the next step would be to delve into magic cards.
As someone with a pure heart, he needed to thoroughly understand the countermeasures against dirty magic like mind-affecting and curse-based spells! Just the thought of others potentially using such magic on him made his skin crawl.
And what if...
Just what if...
He ever found himself in a situation where he had no choice but to use these efficient spells himself one day.
Even then, he would need to know how to circumvent these defenses.
As the saying goes, know yourself and know your enemy, and you shall never be defeated!
