Chapter 394: Sybrian's First Day on the Job
Chapter 394: Sybrian's First Day on the Job
Several trainee prison guards walked slowly down a dimly lit corridor on the bottom floor of Helrom Prison, heading towards the warden's office.
After exiting the teleportation hall, they crossed a suspension bridge, from which they could see the cells below and the guards on duty.
From time to time, they passed other guards going in the opposite direction, their uniforms similar but their expressions more serious. These guards walked with quick, purposeful strides, their eyes tired yet focused. They might nod in greeting as they passed the trainees, but they soon returned to their busy tasks.
Among them were guards with furrowed brows, their faces etched with worry and stress, as if grappling with thorny issues.
After crossing several suspension bridges, Sybrian and Great Love Poet once again entered an indoor area, this time with tall bookshelves made of dark oak, filled with thick law books and historical documents.
The prison guards working in the offices seemed much more relaxed, almost carefree, with smiles on their faces, untouched by the solemnity and weight of the prison. Some hummed softly to themselves as they read, seemingly immersed in their own worlds, enjoying a tranquility that the guards on the upper levels lacked.
Some even leaned against the walls, chatting idly, their voices echoing softly off the corridor walls.
"... "
Paying little heed to the guards on this floor, Sybrian and her companions quickened their pace.
From what Sybrian observed, the work and states of the guards on this floor varied greatly in complexity and intensity. Some tasks were simple and could be done casually, while others required a near-fearless mindset.
The assignment and distribution of these tasks fell under the warden's responsibilities.
As they neared the warden's office, the number of guards dwindled.
It seemed that most of the guards on this floor had already received their assignments for the day.
The trainees were slightly later than the regular guards, who had likely already started their shifts.
Up ahead, the double doors to the warden's office stood open, one side adorned with a brass nameplate engraved with the room's name and the warden's working hours.
Sybrian paused briefly at the office entrance, ensuring there were no restrictions, before leading Great Love Poet through the partially open, thick brown wooden door.
The spacious warden's office was decorated as exquisitely as the lobby. In the center stood an old world instrument, its continental outlines blurred with age.
Next to it were rows of wooden bookshelves holding folders, their covers new and adorned with faintly glowing, intricate dark gold patterns in the dim light. Between the shelves, long corridors laid with polished stone slabs displayed intricate geometric patterns.
As Sybrian led Great Love Poet further into the lobby, their footsteps echoed in the stillness, accompanied by the occasional rustle of pages and the soft whirring of magical devices.
Circling around the world instrument, they reached the back of the lobby, where a long counter formed a large desk, neatly arranged with folders and pen holders.
Seated behind the desk was the warden, a stern-looking man in his fifties with a lean build.
Focused on the documents before him, the warden stamped each one with an official seal, his gaze alternating between the papers and the central control magi-device on the bottom floor. He wore a crisp and immaculate uniform, with a nameplate on his chest bearing his title: Warden Kolendan.
The warden didn't immediately acknowledge the trainees as they entered his office, only slowly lifting his eyelids to scrutinize the group of young, newly-arrived interns.
Then, he returned to his work.
"Mr. Kolendan, we are students from the Protoss Royal Magic Academy. We are here at Helrom Prison today to complete our internship assessment as prison guards. May I trouble you to assign us our duties?" Sybrian asked, bowing slightly in the warden's office.
But the warden didn't react.
He acted as if he hadn't heard a thing and completely ignored their presence, focusing solely on the task at hand.
Time ticked by, and Sybrian stood there, a hint of confusion on her face. Every second felt like an eternity as she waited.
She was unsure if she should speak up again.
Finally, after the warden finished dealing with a few more documents and set them down, he looked up at Sybrian, who stood there like a student being disciplined.
"Why didn't you knock when you came in?" Warden Kolendan slowly raised his head, his voice deep and commanding, his expression unreadable.
Sybrian was taken aback.
Due to the nature of the work on the bottom floor, the warden's office, where tasks were assigned, was more like a public area, with prison guards coming and going frequently. She attributed the open door to efficiency and didn't think knocking was necessary.
"I'm sorry, Warden. We didn't consider that," Sybrian immediately replied, her tone humble and apologetic.
Leaning back in his chair, Warden Kolendan picked up his water cup from the desk and took a sip, casually glancing at Sybrian.
"Rules are of the utmost importance here. If you don't even understand the basic courtesy of knocking, how can you be expected to follow the regimented rules of this place?" His words carried the weight of a mentor reprimanding his juniors, both corrective and authoritative.
Sybrian didn't argue; she simply nodded.
Her eyes remained steady and calm.
In this situation, humility and respect were the wisest choices.
"Warden Kolendan, thank you for your reminder. We will remember this lesson and strictly adhere to the rules from now on," she said, her voice devoid of any resentment or complaint, conveying sincere apology and dedication to her work.
"..." The warden's expression remained unchanged after hearing her response.
He reached for a file from a distance, opened it, and took out several documents already stamped with the imperial seal. He scanned each one with the central magi-device in front of him and then said to himself, "Go and complete them."
As the warden operated the device, the black bracelets on Sybrian and the other interns' wrists began to glow with a deep red light, displaying their newly assigned tasks.
They glanced down at their bracelets, which now showed detailed task descriptions and specific requirements for completion.
