Chapter 393: Rune Tailoring
Chapter 393: Rune Tailoring
As Bradley stood amidst the ruins of the camp, a slightly older wizard from the Academy couldn't help but sigh.
"Stop sighing! Lloyd, you should be grateful that we managed to annihilate the enemy despite the attacks from over a dozen Hellfire Boulder Giants and the ambush by the Black Flame Cult. We only lost a camp, which is a great outcome!"
"This is the best possible result!" Deputy Chief Bradley said solemnly.
Upon hearing this, all the wizards present turned their gaze towards the young man standing in the center of the camp.
It was because of him that they had emerged victorious.
Gregory, the high priest of the Black Flame Cult, had overexerted himself while controlling the Abyssal Hellfire, causing severe damage to his body and leaving him on the brink of unconsciousness. However, this also provided Rain with a rare opportunity to capture a live specimen.
Gregory was immediately placed under heavy guard.
At that moment, a young voice filled with fear spoke up, "Lord Rain, please forgive me for my previous actions."
Paul, the genius of the Academy, bowed deeply towards Rain.
Audrey and Alicia, the two women, stood nearby, observing the scene from a distance.
"Oh? Mistakes?" Rain looked at him with a smile that didn't quite reach his eyes.
At that moment, Rain was in a good mood and didn't intend to pursue the matter further.
After all, compared to Rain, Paul was of a much lower level. Whether he showed respect or not, it wouldn't affect Rain's emotions.
"Yes, Lord Rain," Paul bowed even lower, his forehead breaking out in a cold sweat.
Unlike the other young wizards of the Academy, Paul, as the heir to the Nixon Duke family of the Empire, was well aware of Rain's formidable strength.
"For leaving Audrey and Alicia behind, I punish you to accompany and protect them during their future missions, ensuring their safety. Do you have any objections?"
"Hmm? Of course not!" Paul was taken aback but quickly agreed without hesitation.
Before coming here, he had imagined various ways Rain might punish him, but he never expected Rain to lift the whip and then gently put it down.
"Lord Rain, please rest assured, I swear I will fulfill this task!" Paul felt relieved and assured Rain again.
"Hmm," Rain nodded slightly and waved his hand, indicating that Paul could leave.
Rain proposed this task because he knew he couldn't stay at the Academy indefinitely.
Among the metal-type wizards, only Mentor Magaro possessed decent combat capabilities. The others still had a long way to go before they could stand on their own.
Paul's only flaw was his fear of death, but he was still capable. If he took charge, it would be sufficient for most situations.
Upon hearing Rain's words, Audrey and Alicia were slightly taken aback but immediately looked at Rain with even more gratitude.
They were well aware that their 'mysterious junior' wouldn't be staying at the Academy for long.
His actions were a way of ensuring their safety.
As everyone began to clean up the battlefield, Rain checked the combat prompts:
[Congratulations! You have defeated a powerful enemy and obtained 26 Golden Skill Points!]
[Congratulations! Your Will (Hidden) attribute has increased!]
[Congratulations! Your Warhammer Wizard (Legendary) profession level has increased!]
Although Rain had defeated the Abyssal Hellfire Boulder Giant, the profession level of the Thousand Blade King (Epic) was as high as level 13, requiring a massive amount of experience to level up. Therefore, he didn't gain another level.
However, due to Rain's repeated use of wizardry skills during the battle, the Warhammer Wizard (Legendary) profession, which hadn't increased in a long time, advanced from level 10 to level 11, granting him an additional attribute point and skill point.
This situation also reminded Rain of the promotion requirements for his other professions.
"Currently, I'm still some distance away from becoming a Crystalization Wizard. If I follow the standard procedure, it will take some time."
"In the next few days, I can focus on promoting my other professions."
"For instance, I can work on the follow-up to the Tailor profession in the Imperial Capital."
"There's also the promotion of the two Superb-tier professions, 'Deadly Poison Master' and 'Grand Smith,' which haven't been advanced in a long time, especially the former. Perhaps I should pay a visit to the Royal Apothecary Association."
"After all, the Imperial Capital is the headquarters of the Royal Apothecary Association, where there's a high probability of finding clues for the follow-up profession of the 'Deadly Poison Master.'"
Additionally, Rain currently had 14 remaining attribute points and 1 remaining skill point.
He had used them all up when upgrading his Tier 2 Magic 'Iron Skin.'
As for the Golden Skill Points, after consuming 8 points previously, he had 69 points left. This time, he gained another 26 points, bringing the total to 95 points, just shy of three digits.
However, considering the missing fourth layer of the Advanced Meditation of Steel Heart, Rain couldn't afford to have too few Golden Skill Points for his deductions and would only be satisfied with more.
Rain suddenly remembered something and sought out Bradley. "Sir Bradley, if we station troops here, the Academy could procure more Ice Magic Scrolls, which should be quite effective."
"Sir Rain, that's true, but Ice Magic Scrolls are expensive. Given the Academy's financial situation, it's still a challenge to procure them."
"Sir Bradley, has the Academy considered purchasing from the Wizard School in the North?"
"Well, we've made some contact, but we're not exactly familiar with them."
"I see. In a few days, I'll reach out to Winterhold Academy. We should have a significant advantage in terms of price."
"That's wonderful! Winterhold Academy is mostly comprised of Ice Wizards, and their Ice Magic Scrolls are of excellent quality. However, they're often in high demand and hard to obtain. It's perfect that you're willing to help with the procurement!"
The next afternoon, the Academy's large airship returned to Fury Gorge.
This time, the airship not only brought the necessary materials for repairing the camp but also several War Golems.
Additionally, members of the Swordmaster Headquarters accompanied them.
Since traces of the cult had been found here, and the actual defense difficulty had exceeded the upper limit of what a medium-sized Academy could handle alone, Rain had sent a message to the Swordmaster Headquarters the previous day.
As the captured Black Flame Cult High Priest Gregory was escorted away by the Swordmasters, Rain suddenly realized that not only would he receive contribution points from the Academy, but he might also receive a commendation from the Swordmaster Headquarters.
"Sir Rain, the Academy's support has arrived. You can return to the Imperial City at any time."
"Also, due to your expertise in Metal Magic, we've unanimously decided that the Metal Magic team can take a break this time." Deputy Head Bradley politely found Rain and said.
"Oh? Great! Then I'll leave the defense of Flame Canyon to you, Sir Bradley."
"Don't worry, Sir Rain. Although we currently don't know if the cult has any more Abyssal Hellfire Crystals, according to ancient records, the likelihood of them having multiple crystals is low."
"Additionally, with the presence of an Elite Swordsman squad here, even if they attack again, we have the strength to resist."
When Audrey and Alicia heard this news, they couldn't help but be stunned, but soon they were overjoyed.
They hadn't expected their trip to Flame Canyon to end so swiftly.
It was like they had hitched a ride on Sir Rain's good fortune.
That evening, the three of them boarded the airship and returned to the Academy's headquarters.
Rain first went to Mentor Mogaro's office.
"Rain, as you said, there's someone behind this. But I didn't expect it to be the Black Flame Cult."
"If it weren't for you, even if we had noticed, we might not have been able to withstand it," Mogaro said, stroking his long red goat beard and looking at Rain with a smile.
He was increasingly satisfied with his disciple.
"Mentor, this is what I should do," Rain said with a slight smile.
"Yes, for your outstanding efforts in Flame Canyon, the Academy has decided to reward you with 15,000 contribution points."
"Thank you, Mentor," Rain said, bowing slightly.
Although Rain had expected the Academy's contribution points, he hadn't anticipated such generosity, rewarding him with so many points.
Perhaps it was related to his status as a Swordmaster, as well as his help in procuring Ice Magic Scrolls from Winterhold Academy and other factors.
"Rain, what are your plans next? Are you returning to the Swordmaster Headquarters?" Mogaro asked with concern.
"Not yet. By the way, Mentor, I'd like to inquire about the Advanced Magic Item 'Concealing Robe' you gave me last time. Did you make it yourself?" Rain asked.
Given that the headquarters was involved in the cleanup of this matter, involving some of the Swordmaster's internal secrets, Rain naturally couldn't discuss it further.
Coincidentally, he also had a question he wanted to ask, which was about the production of the Advanced Magic Item 'Concealing Robe', as it might be related to his future path as a Master Weaver.
"It wasn't me who made it; it was the Academy's Master Jacqueline. What's the matter? Did it get damaged?"
"Not at all. I just want to learn the crafting technique of this 'Concealing Robe'," Rain shook his head.
"Hmm? You want to learn Magic Weaving?" Mogaro's eyes widened, looking at Rain with an expression of extreme surprise.
"Magic Weaving?" Rain furrowed his brows, a bit puzzled.
It was the first time he had heard this term.
"Are you sure you want to learn it?"
"Yes!" Rain nodded.
"Alright, I'll take you to her. Although Jacqueline and I have known each other for many years, I'll still have to ask her," Mogaro said.
Mogaro led Rain to an office located in the Academy's Flesh and Blood Division.
After Mogaro knocked on the door, an elderly woman with mostly white hair and an aged appearance opened the door.
"Hmm? Mogaro, what brings you here?" The old woman asked with a cold expression.
"Cough, Rain, let me introduce you to Master Jacqueline," Mogaro said, his face slightly embarrassed.
"Jacqueline, this is Rain," Mogaro introduced.
"Rain? That name sounds familiar. Are you that Rain?" Jacqueline didn't seem to pay much attention at first, but suddenly her eyes lit up as she realized something and looked at Rain.
"Yes, that's him," Mogaro confirmed, patting Rain's shoulder.
"What? Rain, you want to learn Magic Weaving?" Jacqueline asked, her face showing surprise.
"Yes, Master Jacqueline," Rain nodded.
"Alright, with your status, I have no reason to refuse your request to learn Magic Weaving. Well, Mogaro, you can leave now," Jacqueline agreed.
But suddenly, she changed her tone and asked Mogaro to leave, indicating that there might be some history between her and Master Mogaro.
And it wasn't just that Jacqueline had a bad temper, but specifically, her temper was directed at Master Mogaro.
"Rain, do you know what Magic Weaving is?" Jacqueline asked politely.
"Not exactly. By the way, Master Jacqueline, you can just call me by my name," Rain replied, showing respect to his elder teacher.
"Well, Magic Weaving is a special type of rune, or you can think of it as using Magic Threads to sew onto fabric, creating a unique pattern that produces effects similar to runes," Master Jacqueline explained with a smile.
"Sewing with Magic Threads?" Rain repeated, trying to understand Jacqueline's words. After a moment of reflection, he seemed to grasp the concept.
"Yes, Rain, come and take a look. I'll demonstrate by making a basic low-level Magic Item, the Apprentice Robe," Jacqueline said, leading Rain to the nearby workshop.
Jacqueline picked up a green thread that emitted a faint magical glow and, after threading a needle, began to sew onto a ready-made white silk robe.
Despite being over a hundred years old, Jacqueline's sewing speed was impressive.
In no time, she had sewn Magic Threads onto the cuffs, collar, and most importantly, the lining of the robe, creating intricate patterns.
Rain could clearly sense that these patterns resembled those of runes, not in exact design but in their underlying essence.
"This Apprentice Robe has only one effect. Every three days, it automatically casts the Level 0 spell 'Dust Removal,' keeping the robe clean and tidy," Jacqueline explained as she worked.
"It's also the standard robe worn by wizard apprentices in the Academy," she added.
Rain looked at the Apprentice Robe, realizing why it felt so familiar—most wizard apprentices in the Academy wore these robes.
In less than ten minutes, Jacqueline finished sewing and handed the completed Apprentice Robe to Rain.
"Here, Rain, take a good look. If you can understand this, you can consider yourself initiated," Jacqueline said.
"Thank you, Master Jacqueline!" Rain took the robe and examined it closely.
The patterns formed by the Magic Threads emitted a faint magical glow, and the designs on different parts of the robe had a similar essence to the 'Basic Defense Runes' he had learned before.
It was like comparing a tiger engraved on a bronze cauldron to a phoenix embroidered on silk—the techniques and craftsmanship were different, but the cultural essence was the same.
Suddenly, a system notification rang in Rain's mind:
[Ding! Host has comprehended Magic Weaving, unlocking the advanced profession: Magic Weaver (Beyond Mortal)!]
[Prerequisites for the advancement to Magic Weaver: 1. Tailoring Skill Base level 5 or higher; 2. Strength 12, Constitution 12, and Spirit 18 or higher; 3. Independently craft ten qualified Magic Weaver products. Current conditions not met! Advancement to Magic Weaver failed!]
Upon seeing the system notification, Rain couldn't help but smile.
He had almost met the requirements, falling short only on condition three.
"By the way, Master Jacqueline, are there any specific requirements for the choice of fabric? Can I use regular linen or silk?" Rain asked.
"Yes and no," Jacqueline replied after a moment's thought.
"When it comes to crafting magic items at the level of cloth armor, silk fabric is usually sufficient. However, for higher-level items, such as magic artifacts, special fabrics are required."
"For example, the magic artifact 'Shadow Robe' requires Devil Fabric, which is a special material dyed with demon blood and crafted through a unique ritual."
"Of course, the sewing technique is also more intricate and extremely challenging." As Jacqueline spoke, a hint of melancholy flashed in her eyes.
It was evident that Jacqueline, like Master Mogaro, had reached the peak of a first-tier wizard many years ago due to limited talent.
According to what Rain had learned previously, only second-tier liquidization wizards could potentially create the lowest-level magic artifacts.
In other words, Master Jacqueline before him had likely not yet crafted a magic artifact through rune tailoring.
"What about this rune thread?" Rain picked up the thread Jacqueline had just used for sewing and asked.
Upon holding it, Rain realized that the thread felt rigid, almost like a steel wire, which was in stark contrast to Jacqueline's graceful movements.
Additionally, the rune thread was actually transparent.
It seemed to have been soaked in a special liquid, giving it a fluorescent green tint.
"This is spider silk soaked in a hardening liquid. It will only soften after infusing it with mental energy."
"If you understand alchemy and can prepare the hardening liquid yourself, you can try making it. However, the easiest and most efficient way is to purchase it with contribution points at the Academy's supply exchange." Jacqueline explained.
"I see." Rain nodded in understanding.
Despite being a basic magic item, the 'Apprentice Robe' involved various aspects of rune tailoring, which explained why Master Jacqueline had allowed Rain to observe the crafting process.
"Master Jacqueline, can I try making one myself?"
"Rain, did you understand everything?"
"More or less."
"Alright, go ahead. But I don't have any spare silk robes at the moment." Jacqueline stepped aside, ready to sew a robe for Rain on the spot.
"It's fine, Master Jacqueline. I can make it myself." Rain glanced at the well-equipped workstation and volunteered.
"Oh?" Jacqueline looked surprised, seemingly disbelieving that Rain could sew a silk robe.
After all, tailoring and rune sewing were vastly different skills.
As Rain skillfully crafted the silk robe, Jacqueline's astonishment grew.
"Your tailoring skills are truly impressive, I can hardly believe it."
"I never expected a man to possess such exceptional sewing skills."
"However, this will greatly benefit your rune sewing studies."
Following Jacqueline's instructions, Rain began sewing runes. After several attempts and adjustments, he quickly completed his first 'Apprentice Robe'.
The system notifications promptly followed:
[You have crafted the basic magic item 'Apprentice Robe', and your understanding of it has increased!]
[You have learned a new skill - Apprentice Robe]
[Your skill in crafting Apprentice Robes has improved. Experience gained: +7]
[You have successfully crafted a basic magic item, 'Apprentice Robe'. Tailor Master experience gained: +283]
Witnessing Rain's achievement in crafting an 'Apprentice Robe' in less than two hours, Jacqueline's expression mirrored Master Mogaro's earlier reaction.
"Wow, Rain, if I hadn't heard of your accomplishments, I would have taken you as my disciple based on your talent for runes. What a shame for Master Mogaro!" Jacqueline exclaimed.
Although she had taught Rain some rune techniques, it was no longer possible for her to accept Rain as her disciple given his current strength and status.
"Erm..." Rain was momentarily at a loss for words.
Since rune thread was expensive, Rain didn't plan to continue testing his luck. He intended to practice more in his office.
First, however, he needed to visit the Academy's supply exchange to purchase some rune thread, among other things.
Additionally, according to Master Mogaro, Rain's contribution points should now meet the 10,000-point requirement, meaning he could access third-tier metal magic.
Soon, Rain arrived at the exchange.
There, a cute-looking female dwarf sat idly at the counter, casually flipping through something.
"Hello, please check the third-tier metal magic for me." Rain handed over his Academy identification crystal.
The dwarf girl recognized Rain and took his crystal with a hint of suspicion. She inserted it into the slot to check his points.
The next moment, her sparkling eyes widened in disbelief, as if she couldn't fathom that Rain had accumulated 10,000 contribution points so quickly.
