Chapter 39: The Ambush
Chapter 39: The Ambush
Unfortunately, Rayn did not have a suitable two-handed greatsword at hand.
If he had such a weapon, he could fully utilize the power of the Grizzly Sword Technique and further enhance his combat prowess.
Currently, he only had a standard bastard sword issued to the Night Watch forces.
However, the bastard sword was passable, with a slightly longer hilt that allowed for two-handed grip, but its lightweight blade couldn't unleash the full potential of the Grizzly Sword Technique.
Soon, Rayn and the elite Night Watchmen met Hamilton, fully geared in his knight plate armor and wielding a sword and shield, at the entrance of the Administration Hall.
Hamilton's formidable presence as a sheriff was evident, accentuated by his solemn expression and near-square jawline.
Upon seeing Rayn, Hamilton nodded slightly, not having the time to engage in conversation.
Once everyone had gathered, Hamilton began briefing the group:
"Just now, the Habsburg Manor dispatched numerous personnel into the western Nightsong Forest. Currently, falcons and dogs have roughly pinpointed the location of the feral werewolf."
"The target is cunning and is currently hiding in a secluded valley."
"Now, our team and the Habsburg Manor's forces will split into three groups to surround and ambush the feral werewolf."
"..."
Rayn realized that the manor's falcons and bloodhounds had already set out to locate the werewolf, employing clever tracking methods.
After a brief motivational ceremony, Hamilton donned a bucket-style plate armor helmet and personally led the team, including Rayn and over twenty elite Night Watchmen, swiftly toward their designated position.
Their group was assigned to the northern side of the valley, the farthest from Glintstone Town, making the time constraint quite tight.
Nightsong Forest.
A secluded valley.
Savage Claw, feasting on a pitiful "beastling," looked up at several eagles circling in the sky with his green eyes.
These eagles seemed peculiar, constantly circling and screeching above him, but he didn't pay them much mind.
He had carefully chosen this valley, which had exits leading out in three different directions.
Even if humans came seeking revenge, they couldn't do much to him, and he might even get to taste more "meat" again.
If the "Ironclads" showed up, he could just retreat deeper into the forest, where humans wouldn't dare to follow.
"Woof! Woof! Woof!"
Suddenly, a chorus of barks erupted from the western entrance of the valley.
This immediately caught Savage Claw's attention, and he looked up.
While the eagles hadn't confirmed the presence of humans, the barking was a sure sign that they were on his trail.
Suddenly, a slender and agile grey bloodhound burst out of the thicket, and upon seeing Savage Claw, it began excitedly barking.
If not for the significant size difference, the grey bloodhound would have charged right at him!
"Damn annoying little thing, a human's lapdog!"
Savage Claw's paw dug into the ground, sending dirt flying, and with a powerful leap, his massive form shot toward the bloodhound like an arrow.
"Whine~" The bloodhound's eyes widened in fear, and it immediately turned and fled back into the thicket.
While the bloodhound wasn't particularly strong in combat, its slender and powerful limbs allowed it to run at incredible speed. Savage Claw was faster, but due to the dense trees in the thicket, it wasn't as easy to take down the bloodhound as he'd hoped.
"(Common Tongue) Found it! It's here!"
The sound of human voices, filled with excitement, reached Savage Claw's ears.
He looked up and realized the situation might not be in his favor. His green eyes widened, and he halted his steps, immediately turning and dashing toward another exit located on the southern side of the valley.
Soon, the commotion was left behind, and Savage Claw felt a sense of triumph.
"These foolish humans, mobilizing such a large force only to be disappointed. Their expressions must be quite amusing."
"Tomorrow or the day after, I'll come back and finish the job! Hehe!"
"I missed out on the juiciest and most tender human female, I must make up for this regret!"
As Savage Claw sprinted, his green eyes flashed with cunning and satisfaction.
"Woof woof woof!"
Suddenly, the entrance to the southern valley also echoed with barks.
Savage Claw's expression changed, and he immediately skidded to a halt, leaving two deep trenches in the ground.
"Damn! Humans know about this southern exit too!"
With a resentful glance, Savage Claw headed towards the northern exit of the valley, his last remaining escape route.
At this moment, Savage Claw's composure from the beginning had faded.
However, he wasn't completely desperate. As he ran, he muttered to himself, "Fortunately, I was prepared, or else I'd be caught in a pincer attack by humans."
When Savage Claw approached the northern exit, he intentionally slowed down and listened carefully. After confirming the absence of barking, a satisfied smile appeared on his face.
"Stupid humans! Thinking you can catch Savage Claw, you're dreaming! Haha!"
Then, Savage Claw quickly rushed towards the northern exit.
"Whoosh, whoosh, whoosh!"
A dense rain of arrows startled Savage Claw, but his quick reflexes saved him. His tall and robust body immediately exuded a faint cyan aura, and his speed increased significantly, allowing him to dodge most of the arrows.
Savage Claw dodged behind a large tree and peered forward.
At the northern exit of the valley, several figures clad in leather armor and wielding bows and arrows emerged, led by a rare 'Ironclad'—none other than the sword and shield knight, Sheriff Hamilton.
Although the sun had just risen, the morning light was dim in the Nightsong Forest, shrouded in thin mist and lush foliage. The visibility was poor due to the dappled shadows of the trees.
Fortunately, Rayn now possessed the passive ability of Dark Vision, allowing him to clearly see the form of the rampaging werewolf.
Standing over two meters tall with long and powerful limbs, the werewolf wore mismatched armor, seemingly scavenged from multiple human mercenaries, resulting in an ill-fitting ensemble.
The werewolf didn't carry any weapons, but its sharp claws gleamed menacingly.
The fate of the previous victims was evident.
As Rayn and the others observed the werewolf, it, too, was sizing them up.
"The 'Ironclad' is too troublesome, and there are so many other humans around."
This realization extinguished Savage Claw's desire for a fight to the death.
He immediately turned and sprinted towards the southern exit of the valley.
Facing the 'Ironclad', Savage Claw would rather confront a large group of human soldiers.
But as he approached the southern exit, he was surprised to find another 'Ironclad' wielding a two-handed greatsword, accompanied by dozens of chainmail-clad humans wearing nasal helms and carrying various weapons.
Savage Claw's heart sank.
Determined not to give up, he charged towards the first exit, the western one, only to find yet another 'Ironclad' with a sword and shield, along with a group of human soldiers.
Savage Claw was in despair!!
The next second, Savage Claw's face turned fierce.
"I can't go out from the western or southern exits now. Those exits lead to human-occupied areas, and I don't know if there might be other traps waiting for me."
"So, the only way to survive is to break through the northern exit, return to the depths of the forest, and catch my breath!"
With determination, Savage Claw started running at full speed. A gray figure once again rushed towards the northern exit where Hamilton and Rayn were located.
