Chapter 39: My Damn Charm
Chapter 39: My Damn Charm
"Huh"
Hearing Daphne's words, Jerry was taken aback.
However, he didn't think there was anything wrong with Daphne. After all, as a Slytherin, it was normal for her to have such thoughts, given the education and environment she grew up in.
But Jerry wasn't a typical Slytherin and didn't share their outdated beliefs.
A person's strength has little to do with their blood purity; the most important thing is their own power.
External factors are ultimately just that—external. As long as you are strong enough, you become the one who sets the rules.
"Daphne, no one can influence me. I, Jerry Carmen, as a Slytherin, will become the most powerful wizard in this world."
Jerry looked at Daphne with determined eyes, radiating an intimidating presence.
Daphne was taken aback by his demeanor. The discontent in her eyes vanished, replaced by admiration.
"My damn charm, he~~~tui, that line is so cringeworthy, but kids really eat it up!"
As a Slytherin, if he were to refute Daphne's pure-blood theory now, it would surely cause dissatisfaction among his housemates. However, distancing himself from Hermione and others didn't align with his values. Right now, Hermione was the only one in the entire school who could keep up with his progress and exchange ideas for mutual improvement.
Moreover, building a good relationship with Harry would have many positive effects with Dumbledore. After all, a Slytherin who has no prejudice against blood status and is willing to be friends with a Gryffindor and a Muggle-born witch is exactly what Dumbledore wants to see.
Otherwise, if Dumbledore were to see him as the next Voldemort, that would be disastrous.
"Jerry, the best wizard isn't necessarily you; it could be me too!"
At that moment, Hermione, who was standing nearby, retorted with a hint of defiance.
Harry and Ron, standing beside Hermione, also looked at Jerry with a touch of admiration in their eyes.
"Hmph, how can you compare to Jerry!"
Daphne immediately shot back at Hermione with a mocking tone.
Suddenly, the entire potions classroom fell into a pin-drop silence.
Professor Snape, dressed in his black wizard robes and with a face that could scare a three-year-old, had appeared at the door.
If you asked which professor at Hogwarts was the most intimidating to the young witches and wizards, it wouldn't be the most powerful wizard, Dumbledore, or the strictest and most serious Professor Mcgonagall.
It was Professor Snape, who always wore a grim expression, as if any moment of anger could result in the most terrifying and evil Dark Magic.
Even the Slytherin students, despite being in his house, felt a chill run down their spines when they saw their head of house.
Snape held his wand in one hand and a potions textbook in the other, striding to the front of the class like a large bat.
Like other professors, he first took out the attendance list.
However, when he called Harry's name, he paused, then looked at Harry with a sharp gaze and sneered softly:
"Harry Potter, our new and famous arrival."
Draco Malfoy, sitting in the back, covered his mouth and chuckled.
After finishing, Snape continued to call out names.
When he reached Jerry Carmen, he paused, his tone tinged with a hint of approval:
"Very impressive. Compared to some who are all show and no substance, you managed to earn over twenty house points just in the first week of school. That's what I call excellence!"
"Snape really does have it out for Harry, or perhaps he just has a strong bias towards Slytherin students!"
Jerry inwardly grumbled to himself.
After all, Hermione had earned almost as many house points over the past few days, but since she was earning them for Gryffindor, Snape had simply skipped over her when calling out names.
Draco Malfoy, who had been laughing at Harry being mocked by Snape, turned green with envy when he heard Jerry being praised, almost as green as the lights in the Slytherin common room.
Putting down the attendance list, Snape's eyes cold and empty, he surveyed the classroom of young wizards and gave a brief introduction to the subject of Potions.
Jerry summarized it as: Potions is an incredibly powerful and important subject, and anyone who can't master it is a fool.
After his introductory remarks, Snape immediately launched into a series of sharp questions directed at Harry.
Harry wasn't Hermione, or a typical young wizard, and there was no way he could have memorized the complex and difficult Magical Drafts and Potions before the school year began.
Using this as an opportunity, Snape launched into another round of mocking.
Even Jerry, who had anticipated this, couldn't help but feel a bit of sympathy for Harry.
If Harry hadn't grown up at his aunt's house, where he had endured countless hardships and developed a strong heart, he might have been scared into tears by now, just like any other young wizard.
Jerry knew that while Snape was willing to protect Harry with his life, it was only because Harry was the son of Lily, the woman Snape loved the most.
With a face that closely resembled that of his former rival James, and now a Gryffindor, it was hard for Snape not to dislike Harry.
If Harry had been a girl named Harriet and had been sorted into Slytherin, Snape's attitude would likely have been very different.
"Jerry Carmen, answer the questions I just asked!"
After a bout of mocking, Snape paused, looking at Harry's green eyes that were so much like Lily's, and then completely ignored Hermione, whose hand was raised high, and commanded Jerry to answer.
Jerry sighed in resignation but stood up.
He really didn't want to get involved, especially since Harry was already in a difficult position and Hermione's hand was raised so high.
But since Snape had called on him directly, he had no choice but to stand and answer honestly.
"Narcissus Root Powder and Mugwort combined can create a powerful sleeping potion, the Elixir of Sleep. A Bezoar is a stone taken from a goat's stomach and has strong antidotal properties. As for Aconite and Wolfsbane, they are the same plant, commonly known as Aconite."
"Ten points to Slytherin!"
Snape nodded in satisfaction, and the Slytherin students cheered.
Even Goyle and Crabbe couldn't resist clapping, though they were quickly silenced by a glare from Draco Malfoy.
"Adding ten points directly, just as expected from Professor Snape!"
Snape's blatant favoritism made Jerry feel a bit uncomfortable.
