Chapter 39: Following the Procedure
Chapter 39: Following the Procedure
As Chen Chuan entered the dormitory, the dorm security guard approached him, saying, "Student, please show your student ID."
Chen Chuan took out his student card from his pocket and handed it to the guard.
The security guard took it and inserted it into the card reader slot. The indicator light above flickered, and after a few taps on the color-coded keys, a card with his name printed on it was printed out with a few clicks.
The security guard returned the card and the slip to Chen Chuan, saying, "Student Chen, this is your entry/exit slip for today. Please keep it safe. Your dormitory is located in Zone 1, Room 4 on the seventh floor."
Chen Chuan thanked him and headed towards the stairs. He noticed that the dormitory building had an elevator, and it seemed like there weren't many people around at this time. He walked over and pressed the button. The grated door slid open with a distinctive metallic grinding sound, and he stepped inside. He pressed the button for the seventh floor, and the elevator shook slightly as it ascended.
After waiting for a while, the number on the counter reached seven. The elevator came to a stop, and the door slid open to the side. Chen Chuan stepped out.
Before him was a spacious hall covering hundreds of square meters. Above, there were zone number signs. To the left were Zones 3 and 4, and to the right were Zones 1 and 2. He turned right and located Zone 1. Ahead was a wide, carpeted corridor with four doors on either side facing each other.
At the end of the corridor, Chen Chuan found Room 4, his assigned dormitory. He took out his key and opened the door. As he stepped inside, he noticed a floor-to-ceiling window directly across from him, with the curtains drawn open. The midday sun shone brightly through the window.
Chen Chuan set down his luggage and walked towards the window, adjusting the curtains slightly.
From this vantage point, he could see the scenery outside. Below was a verdant lake surrounded by willow trees along its shore. He recalled the map and recognized it as the famous "Spring and Autumn Lake" within the school grounds. On the other side of the lake stood the administrative building of Wu Yi Academy, and there was also a lakeside track. He could see many students strolling below.
After observing for a while, Chen Chuan turned his attention to the interior of the room.
It was a single-occupancy dormitory covering approximately 90 square meters. Apart from the bedroom and living room, it also included a drying room, a bathroom, and a private training room. The room provided 24-hour water and electricity, and outside, there was a lost and found board, a public telephone, and an internal delivery box.
On his desk, he found a booklet titled "Dormitory Rules." The room was cleaned daily by a dedicated staff member who also changed the bed linens. Laundry services were available at the laundry room below the dormitory, but food was not allowed inside the dormitory. Smoking and drinking were prohibited, and posting posters or similar items on the walls was strictly forbidden...
There were many other rules listed.
After reading through the booklet briefly, Chen Chuan had a general understanding of the rules and decided to head to the cafeteria for a meal. He would deal with other matters upon his return.
"Knock, knock..."
At that moment, Chen Chuan heard a knock on the door. The door wasn't fully closed, so he turned around and saw a student, two or three years older than him, wearing the same upper hall uniform, standing there with an unfriendly expression.
"Is there something I can help you with, senior?" Chen Chuan asked.
The student stood there, his tone slightly unfriendly. "Are you Chen Chuan?"
"I don't know who you are, senior," Chen Chuan replied.
The student waved a slip of paper in front of Chen Chuan, his tone filled with resentment. "I'm Senior Shu Han, the senior assigned to guide you. I've been waiting for you all morning, but you never showed up. The other students are making fun of me. I'm in my third year, and I've never seen a freshman as arrogant as you."
"My apologies, Senior Shu," Chen Chuan said, "I couldn't inform you earlier because I had some school matters to attend to this morning."
He guessed that the school might have failed to convey the message to the seniors, perhaps due to oversight or intentionally. However, the matter was already concluded, so he prepared to present his entry/exit slip, which would resolve the misunderstanding.
Senior Shu, however, looked him up and down, flexing his wrist slightly. "Well, now that you're here, there's no point in discussing it further. As your assigned senior, I need to test your abilities to understand your situation better. That way, I can write a more comprehensive report for the higher-ups."
(End of Chapter)Chen Chuan: "Oh? Is there a procedure for this?"
Shu Han rolled his eyes impatiently, but his gaze was somewhat unfocused. "What nonsense are you talking about? I'm your senior, and I should know better than you."
Chen Chuan smiled and glanced at him a few times. "Sure." Whether there was an official procedure or not, he was also curious about the skills of the senior students.
Wei Chang'an had been observing all this, and from what he could see, Shu Han was indeed formidable. As a third-year student, he had likely mastered the art of force, as evidenced by his performance in the phone booth. According to Yu Gang, even in Wu Yi Academy, such a person would be considered an elite.
Unfortunately, there was no time or opportunity to spar with him. Instead, Shu Han wanted to learn a thing or two from the senior student standing before him, who was also a Class A student.
Shu Han looked around and said, "We can't really move here. Let's go outside."
Chen Chuan readily agreed and followed him to an open area on the same floor, which was actually a training ground of over 500 square meters, ample space for spectators and sparring.
Upon reaching the outside, a senior student was leaning against the wall, waiting idly. Seeing the two of them, he smiled and said, "What's up? Are you going through the procedure?"
Shu Han nodded.
You see, those who practice martial arts tend to have a bit of a temper. Some juniors, without having gone through a proper beating, act like they're the boss, speaking arrogantly during the procedure, which can easily lead to conflicts. In such cases, verbal communication is useless, and fists become the only language.
This was a sort of unspoken procedure, a set of rules developed by the students. Usually, a single round of sparring would be enough to humble the troublemaker, and then they could calmly discuss the issue.
However, Chen Chuan's case was special. He had a good attitude, and there might be other reasons. But leaving someone hanging without a definite answer, making them wait all morning, was indeed infuriating. Shu Han was genuinely annoyed, so he wanted to go through the procedure.
At the same time, he had also heard that Chen Chuan had knocked down Zhong Wu, a monster-like figure, after his enrollment. Some even compared Chen Chuan to one of his idols, which made Shu Han feel even more competitive. He wanted to measure up against Chen Chuan.
The senior student, intrigued, took the initiative to walk up to Chen Chuan and extended his hand for a handshake.
"You're Chen Chuan, right? Nice to meet you. I'm Shen Shao, and I've heard of you. Hey, you probably don't know, but your reputation has grown significantly. Even a third-year student like me has heard of it. You managed to knock down a monster like Zhong Wu. I'm truly impressed. Just be gentle later, don't hurt your senior Shu Han. He's actually a good person, just a bit irritable today because he's been waiting for you. Especially since he just got rejected a few days ago."
Shu Han couldn't help but feel annoyed. "What are you talking about? Can you stop bringing up irrelevant things? Why would I need a junior to yield? And I told you, I wasn't rejected. We just rejected each other."
"Yes, yes, I understand. She rejected you first, and then you rejected her."
Shu Han felt a bit embarrassed and said, "Are you saying we should go through the procedure here first?"
Shen Shao said, "Alright, I won't say more. Just be careful, it's only the beginning of the semester, no need to get injured."
Chen Chuan could tell that he was enjoying the spectacle, but it didn't bother him. In the past, he could only find Lu Ke at Yu Gang's place, and later he had to go to the Fist House to find sparring partners. Now, with a free sparring partner, he was more than welcome.
If he lost, he could identify his weaknesses, and if he won, it might help him unlock his Second Self. Why not give it a try?
He did some light stretching and, upon turning back, saw that Shu Han was already waiting.
