Chapter 389: The Messenger of Vengeance
Chapter 389: The Messenger of Vengeance
"I win. That was certainly an interesting duel!"
Yugi Muto struck a pose.
Ryuo Marufuji: "..."
"I know I should be happy, but I don't think you feel the same." Yugi acknowledged.
So, you knew all along.
Ryuo took a deep breath, composing himself as he stood up and closed his eyes gently.
"You've improved tremendously over the past six months. Good duel, Yugi Muto." Ryuo admitted.
"Well, I wouldn't say that." Yugi scratched his head, "To be honest, I felt like you weren't giving it your all in this duel, Ryuo."
Ryuo frowned, "If you think I was holding back, then you're mistaken. That would be disrespectful to my opponent, and regardless of the situation or who I face, I, as a duelist, would never allow myself to do such a thing."
"No, no, that's not what I meant." Yugi waved his hands, "How should I put it... It felt like although we were dueling, your heart was set on another opponent, Ryuo."
Ryuo pondered Yugi's words.
Was there someone else he had in mind?
"It feels like Ryuo's duels have changed from before. He couldn't fully commit and bring out his best performance, which is a bit unfortunate. But Ryuo is still strong, and I'm sure you'll bounce back quickly. No, you'll become even stronger than ever before." Yugi offered a cheerful smile and extended his hand.
"Then let's duel again when that time comes."
After a few seconds of silence, Ryuo shook his hand.
". Deal."
The intra-academy duel ended, and it was rare for a normal duel to make it to the top eight without any casualties. The medical staff on standby outside the field sprinted like track runners as soon as the life points of the duelists dropped to zero. They were ready to carry Ryuo away on a stretcher, but the duelist refused their assistance.
The medical team was surprised. "Wow, no one died in this duel."
Ryuo, however, felt that what he needed was a psychologist, not a medical doctor.
Moving swiftly into the third match, it was finally time for the legendary duelist, Seto Kaiba, to take the stage. Everyone present was curious, as most people had never had the opportunity to witness Kaiba's dueling style over the years. They wondered what his dueling would be like now.
The dueling machine seemed to be in a cooperative mood, as the next match-up it chose was one fueled by grudges.
His opponent was none other than the last of the Three Swords of Doma, Loren, who seemed to despise Kaiba with a passion.
The two duelists took their places on the stage.
"Finally, do you know how long I've waited for this moment, Seto Kaiba?" Loren asked coldly.
"I neither know nor care." Kaiba replied indifferently, "But since we're here, let's duel like true duelists. Hmph, or are you backing out now because you're afraid?"
"You!" Loren's anger flared at Kaiba's arrogant attitude.
"Good. Then let's let the duel do the talking. That suits me just fine."
Both duelists unfolded their dueling disks.
"Duel!" x2
"I'll start by drawing!" Loren declared, not wasting a moment as he raised his hand, card in hand.
"I activate a Field Spell Card! Mystical Refpanel of Nephthys!"
A hexagram-shaped barrier appeared, and a domineering green light soared into the sky. The swirling green aura enveloped both duelists, creating an impenetrable barrier that separated them from the outside world.
Judgment Boy watched with a slight smile, almost as if he were licking his lips in anticipation.
"The Mystical Refpanel of Nephthys, no explanation needed." Loren stated coldly.
"Of course." Kaiba smirked, "It's just a grave you're digging for yourself."
"No, it's the manifestation of my vengeful flames. It's the inferno that will burn your arrogant soul to ashes!" Loren declared, "I activate the Magic Card, 'Angel's Charity'. I draw three cards from my Deck and then discard two cards from my hand."
Loren discarded two cards and then played a monster card.
"Hmm?" You Xuan couldn't help but voice out his surprise.
"What's wrong? Is there a problem with this monster?" Judai asked.
"No, it's nothing." You Xuan shook his head, remaining silent.
Babycerasaurus... that was indeed a card that appeared in the GX anime.
The effect of this card was that when it was destroyed by an effect and sent to the graveyard, you could special summon any Level 4 or lower Dinosaur-type monster from your deck.
Who could have imagined that this once obscure and forgotten old card would one day become a restricted powerhouse with a limit of one allowed in the deck?
"Then, I'll set the rest of my hand..."
Loren grabbed the remaining cards in his hand and placed them face-down on the field.
"...and that's the end of my turn! I set four cards."
"Four face-down cards?"
Judai was taken aback.
Suddenly, he felt a sense of deja vu, as if he were facing You Xuan.
"This duel... it's my only reason for living right now." Loren glared at Kaiba, "If not for you, I would probably still be an ordinary person, living an ordinary life with a warm and loving family."
"My turn, draw." Kaiba interrupted coldly, showing no interest in Loren's words.
"Won't you even ask who I am and why I seek vengeance?" Loren asked angrily.
"Hmph, why would I bother learning the sob story of every stray dog I come across?" Kaiba replied arrogantly.
"You..." Loren was so furious that he nearly choked.
He had been about to launch into a monologue about his tragic past and accuse Kaiba of his crimes, but Kaiba's words had cut him off effectively.
The man clearly didn't care.
"Fine, if that's what you want, we'll settle this with the duel." Loren declared, "I activate the trap, 'Burgess Xyz - Mal trilobite'! I can send a trap card from my deck to the graveyard!"
"Burgess Xyz?" Kaiba furrowed his brows.
This was yet another card he had never heard of.
However, he knew that the New Doma had their own unique card printing methods and their influence spread across various dimensions in the spirit world, so it was only natural that they would have cards that he was unfamiliar with.
"I send this trap card..."
Loren revealed the card he had searched for.
"...'Survival Boundary' from my deck to the graveyard."
Yet another unfamiliar card.
As one of the world's largest card printers, Kaiba was confident that he knew of every card in existence, even if he didn't possess them all. Thus, he was certain that the card Loren had just used was not currently part of the dueling world.
"Interesting." Kaiba chuckled.
To him, such an opponent was truly intriguing.
"Then, I activate the effect of 'Dragon Master Knight - Dragon Dictator' by sending a 'Blue-Eyes White Dragon' from my deck to the graveyard. This allows me to special summon this card from my hand."
Kaiba drew out the Blue-Eyes White Dragon from his deck and sent it to the graveyard.
"Special summon 'Dragon Master Knight - Dragon Dictator'!"
[Dragon Master Knight - Dragon Dictator: ATK 1200]
Loren recognized this disguised card as well: "Is this the evolved form of the 'Dragon Master' series that Kaiba frequently uses? This guy seems to have a troublesome effect."
Dragon Dictator could revive any Blue-Eyes monster from the graveyard by discarding a Blue-Eyes White Dragon or any card with "Blue-Eyes White Dragon" in its name from his hand.
"Then, I'll get rid of your troublesome monster. I activate the trap card 'Survival Boundary' from my graveyard!"
Kyuubei was shocked: "Activating a trap card from the graveyard?!"
"By removing 'Survival Boundary' from play, I can destroy a Dinosaur-type monster I control and any one card my opponent controls!" Loren declared.
"Of course, I'll destroy my own 'Babycerasaurus' and your 'Dragon Master Knight - Dragon Dictator'! Let's perish together, Kaiba Seto!" Loren shouted.
