Chapter 389: Supernatural Source
Chapter 389: Supernatural Source
The Polytechnic Institute was aglow with lights in the night, and students studying late gathered around, watching the busy firefighters at work.
A dark shadow glided along the ground and merged into a shadowy corner. Black Sid emerged, dragging Professor Jim with him, and he glanced back at the Experimental Tower with a hint of fear.
"To lure us in, the Nightwatch has deployed four captains. This time, Rat is as good as dead."
He shook his head. "Professor, it's time to let go."
"Barrow has clearly joined the Nightwatch Organization."
"Let go?" Professor Jim's face twisted. "Do you know what I've sacrificed for Barrow? There's no way I'm giving up!"
"The Dark Wizard doesn't support your actions. If he finds out, we might all be in trouble." Black Sid sighed. "For old times' sake, this is the last time I'll help you."
"Professor!"
"Sometimes you have to know when to let go."
Even though he said this, he could see Jim's determination. Jim was like a mad scientist from the movies, willing to do anything for his research.
"I'm not helping you anymore." Sid shrugged and took a step back, merging into the shadows. "Take care, Professor."
Professor Jim's face turned cold. He stood still, his eyes flickering for a moment, and then a figure in his field of vision caused his expression to twitch slightly.
Tracy...
As a father, Professor Jim had not shown enough care for his daughter, Tracy. Ever since he got involved in his current research project, he had neglected everything else, including maintaining his family relationships.
His wife had left him, and Tracy had to learn to be independent at a very young age.
At times, Professor Jim felt guilty about his daughter, but he also knew that he had dedicated himself to science.
There was nothing he could do about it.
"Tracy!"
His eyes flickered, and Professor Jim had made up his mind.
He was also aware that Barrow had feelings for Tracy. If he played his cards right and used his daughter, he might have a chance to get Barrow again.
"Tap..."
Crisp footsteps approached from not too far away.
Professor Jim instinctively turned his head and saw a middle-aged man dressed like a gentleman, walking with a cane in hand.
He recognized the man from his files.
Professor Karl, who had taken over his laboratory, was a talented research scholar, but his research direction differed from his own.
"Professor Jim."
Professor Karl approached and stopped. "I've been hearing your name a lot lately. It's good to finally meet you."
"Can you see me?" Professor Jim frowned. "Supernatural Perception..."
His body had undergone special modifications, granting him Tier 2 Extraordinary Ability. His psychic power could distort others' perception.
So, even when standing amidst a crowd, he could remain unseen if he wished.
And yet, the visitor had spotted him.
"Yes."
Professor Karl smiled faintly. "I have some abilities of my own."
"I see..." Professor Jim's expression turned neutral. "With that, I suggest you let go of your obsession." He turned and glanced back. "Going back to your family is a good choice."
"Hmph!" Professor Jim scoffed at the suggestion. "Never!"
"Is that so?" Professor Karl sighed lightly. "What a pity."
As he spoke, he stepped forward and, to Professor Jim's bewildered and shocked gaze, gently patted his head.
"Boom!"
The terrifying power washed over Professor Jim, shattering every part of his body.
At the edge of his vision, Tracy turned back as if sensing something, only to shake her head and turn away again.
"Hmm?"
Professor Karl's eyebrows rose slightly as he felt a familiar aura entering his body.
Source Quality +45
How could this be? Only beings associated with the Gods could provide Source Quality, yet Jim had no faith. Why did he have it?
Professor Karl's brow furrowed as he looked down at the ground beneath his feet.
"The Extraordinary Power in this world..."
"Is it related to the Deities?"
"Professor Karl!"
"Blaze!"
The two men shook hands and walked side by side.
"Bomby Auction House is one of the top ten auction houses in the Federation, backed by the Federation's military."
"In Fast City, Bomby Auction House holds three auctions a year, and each time, there are valuable items up for sale."
As they walked, Blaze spoke, "Speaking of which, BHP Group also has its own auction house, but it's not doing very well."
"Hmm..." Professor Karl nodded thoughtfully. "Do all the top ten auction houses have their own backers?"
"Yes," Blaze replied. "To run this kind of business, you need connections. Many extraordinary thieves are eyeing those priceless auction items."
6◇9◇Book◇Bar
When he mentioned 'extraordinary thieves,' he smiled subconsciously, not out of contempt, but finding it amusing.
Professor Karl smiled in agreement.
It seemed that Blaze hadn't truly encountered the Supernatural World, even though his 'girlfriend' was a vampire.
"I heard..."
After finding their seats and settling in, Blaze leaned over and whispered to Karl, "Before the official auction, there's a secret pre-auction event, and only those who receive invitations are eligible to participate."
"The truly valuable items are picked out beforehand."
"Really?" Karl adjusted his clothes.
"Do you still believe in such rumors?"
"I didn't believe it at first," Blaze sighed. "But the person who told me about this is a good friend I've known for many years. Moreover, recently, I saw an item appear in the preview but not in the subsequent auction."
"It was a crystalline skull, carved from a single piece of crystal. The moment I saw it, I was captivated. You..."
"You can't imagine how peculiar that feeling was. It was as if I had to have it, no matter the cost."
Professor Karl raised an eyebrow.
He didn't think Blaze was making up a story, so the only possibility was that the item was Supernatural.
And the auction house would naturally keep items imbued with Supernatural power out of the public eye.
The pre-auction made sense now.
Only those with Supernatural Power and exposure to the Supernatural World were qualified to participate in such auctions.
"What a pity..."
He sighed, not for Blaze, but for his own fleeting hope of gaining something from this event.
"When..."
With a crisp knock, the auction began amidst the crowd's hushed whispers.
Blaze sat upright, a regular at such events due to his wealthy background.
The various auction items no longer held the novelty they once did, and he found himself more curious about Professor Karl.
In just two or three years, Professor Karl had published numerous research papers and become a top scholar in biological genetics, profiting handsomely from his research.
Unlike other scholars, Professor Karl knew how to enjoy life. Beyond necessary research, he spent most of his time having fun.
Like today,
It was rare for a research scholar to attend such a luxury auction.
One by one, the auction items were presented and quickly sold, but the two men showed no interest in bidding.
The real treasures were yet to come.
"The next item is a necklace adorned with twelve gemstones, belonging to a noblewoman from four hundred years ago."
"It is said that this noblewoman had relationships with dozens of men during her lifetime, each one handsome and robust. Even in her later years, she remained adored by men and envied by many women."
"This necklace is one of her legacies..."
"The starting bid is ten thousand pounds!"
Professor Karl slowly took his seat.
He sensed the presence of Supernatural Power in the necklace, and more surprisingly, a faint aura of the Deities.
