Chapter 389: Lanchi's Unexpected Visitor
Chapter 389: Lanchi's Unexpected Visitor
Three days later, in the early morning...
On the north side of the Protoss Royal Magic Academy stood a brick building adorned with deep gray bas-relief sculptures. Today, it was guarded more strictly than usual.
The Redmond Building, constructed in 1728 as the school's main administrative center, was one of the most iconic and grand classical structures on campus. It was not included in the renovation plans proposed by the new principal, Rocky McKassy, and would retain its original appearance for the foreseeable future.
Principal McKassy's office, as well as the reception and meeting areas for important external visitors, were all located on the upper floors of the Redmond Building.
Even if students passed by downstairs, they would only glance and quickly move on. They were all aware of who Principal McKassy was expecting today.
With the implementation of the "Campus Youth Prison Program" proposed by Principal McKassy, the enforcement of school rules would be further strengthened.
While the school would continue to prioritize the safety of its students, punishments would be transformed into opportunities for creating social and public value.
Of course, the school's proposal alone was not enough to sway the heart of Warden Bakas.
If the purpose of this meeting was solely to discuss this plan, it was more likely that Warden Bakas sought to forge a connection with Principal McKassy or perhaps offer him a small favor.
However, with the addition of the large-scale cooperation plan from the Snowfield Province, everything changed.
This was an irresistible flood of wealth, and just the initial trial collaboration for the transport of Ghost Party prisoners from the Snowfield Province had Warden Bakas salivating at the potential future value of the project.
Now, it seemed that Warden Bakas needed Principal McKassy more than ever.
On the third floor of the Redmond Building, Principal McKassy, dressed as he always was, strolled slowly down the corridor of the ancient building alongside a man in his thirties. The surroundings exuded an air of solemnity, immersed in the grandeur of historical art.
"My apologies, Mr. McKassy, for being slightly late," Warden Bakas offered a polite apology. "With the upcoming bishop election in three days, unrest has increased, and the Imperial Police Department has been overwhelmed with tasks."
Unlike his usual uniform as a warden of Herlom Prison, he wore a crisp suit today, his hair neatly combed, and he even sported a pair of gold-rimmed glasses, projecting an image of seriousness, uprightness, and refinement. However, his true style was well-known throughout the Imperial Capital of Herlom, and he was not someone to be trifled with.
He often treated prisoners and subordinates with an air of authority, coldness, and unquestionability, and his smiles were often laced with insincerity, sarcasm, and mockery. Yet, even he softened his demeanor when speaking to Principal McKassy.
In response, Lanchi merely nodded slightly, his gaze fixed forward as if deep in thought.
Their footsteps fell softly on the corridor's plush carpet, a deep crimson hue, thick and textured, flowing gracefully beneath their feet. The wooden walls on either side were adorned with intricate gilded patterns that danced with subtle luster in the light, mirroring the complexities of their thoughts at this moment.
"With great power comes great responsibility. I understand," Lanchi replied with a polite smile and a hint of empathy. "But indeed, the mention of the bishop election in three days gives me a headache."
Lanchi then paused as if remembering something troubling, his voice wavering with uncertainty.
For neutral figures like them in the Imperial Capital, voting without a clear inclination was like gambling. Only by backing the winning bishop could they avoid offending anyone.
"If Mr. Rocky has heard any rumors, I would appreciate hearing them." Warden Bakas sought Lanchi's guidance.
Since Rocky had brought it up, he must have had some thoughts on the matter, and it wasn't a coincidence that he had zeroed in on the key point in Bakas' words.
Bakas had also been gathering information these days, and he had intended to seek guidance from Rocky McKassy. He just hadn't expected Rocky to figure out his intention so quickly.
Lanchi pondered for a moment. "I only know that the nobles and the Imperial Army in the north highly revere the Extinction Branch, and in my opinion, the one I favor the most is Askassan."
Lanchi turned to glance down the corridor, making sure no one was around, before continuing to address Warden Bakas, "......"
Bakas stared at Lanchi's emerald eyes, eyes that conveyed sincerity and a genuine hope for the well-being of Askassan.
"It seems we are of the same mind." Bakas slowly nodded in agreement.
Indeed, upon further reflection, it made sense. Rocky McKassy was the governor of Snowfield Province, and the north was guarded by the Extinction Bishop. It wasn't surprising for Rocky to have some connection with the Extinction Branch.
The two men strolled past a series of neatly arranged bay windows, each framing a view of the outside world like a delicate painting. The windows offered glimpses of the academy's courtyard, distant ancient Herlom-style buildings, lush trees, and the newly renovated campus landscape as envisioned by Lanchi.
Even as he stepped into the academy earlier that day, Bakas had been astonished by the scenery.
He had originally thought of Rocky McKassy as merely a leader with a unique style of management, one who liked to use his authority to create impromptu, questionable works of art. But now, he realized that McKassy's artistic prowess was truly breathtaking.
Even setting aside McKassy's current standing in the Empire, Bakas was certain that his works would become highly sought-after in the Protoss Empire in the future. Beyond the designs of these public facilities, if someone could own a privately commissioned piece by Rocky McKassy, its value would undoubtedly reach legendary proportions.
This only reinforced Bakas' conviction that he must forge a good relationship with the man walking beside him.
With these thoughts in mind, Bakas continued walking slowly with Lanchi.
"Mr. Rocky, I apologize for the late notice, but there is an important figure I know who wishes to speak with you in private. It was also a last-minute decision on his part, and he only confirmed today that he could meet with you. I wonder if you have time?" Warden Bakas lowered his voice slightly as he spoke to Lanchi, who was walking with his hands clasped behind his back.
"Oh? And who might that be?" Lanchi asked, raising an eyebrow in curiosity as he turned to face Warden Bakas.
"Duke Morotain Berenhald," Bakas whispered, discreetly mentioning the name.
"Does Duke Berenhald wish to see me, and do you need to convey this message on his behalf?" Lanchi inquired, his expression serious as he looked intently at Warden Bakas.
Ever since he first arrived in the Northern Continent, even when he was still an unknown figure in the Protoss Empire, he had heard of the name Morotain Berenhald, Duke and holder of the [Original Slab-Undead], one of the two supreme powerhouses in the Protoss Empire and father of Duchess Croliss.
He never expected that the Duke would seek him out so proactively.
