Chapter 385: Kyle's Patronus
Chapter 385: Kyle's Patronus
"Professor Dumbledore isn't in the castle?"
Kyle stood up hastily, perching on his seat to peer towards the teacher's section behind the commentary booth...
A streak of lightning ripped through the sky, briefly illuminating the Quidditch pitch.
Just as Meekal had said, Professor Dumbledore was not there.
And due to the rain, there were far fewer professors observing the game than usual, only a handful, and they all looked grimly alert.
"Ah... Dementors... They're Dementors!"
More and more screams pierced the air as those around the pitch noticed the unusual activity overhead.
The presence of two Dementors on the train had already left the students shaken, and now there were at least a hundred of them!
"How is this possible? It can't be..."
"I thought the professors said they'd only be at the school entrance?"
"Stop the game, Harry is in danger! Someone help Harry!" Hermione cried out from the front row of the stands, her voice carrying across the pitch.
But the noise around them was deafening, and her voice could only travel so far... though it didn't matter anymore.
A blurry shadow was speeding towards them from mid-air.
Draco Malfoy's face was ashen, his knuckles white as he gripped his broom tightly.
It seemed that the presence of the Dementors had unlocked his true potential, for even during the pursuit of the Golden Snitch, he had never flown this fast.
"Help! Somebody help me, I can't stop!" he screamed in terror.
Kyle quickly drew his wand, transfiguring the cloaks and umbrellas around him into large nets that caught the broom just before it collided with the stands.
Having narrowly escaped disaster, the first thing Malfoy did was to kick an unconscious Harry off the broom, explaining loudly,
"It wasn't me! I didn't touch Potter! He fainted from the Dementors and fell onto my broom. He almost made me fall too!"
Draco grew angrier as he spoke, trying to kick Harry again, but people around him held him back.
"What happened?" someone asked.
"We encountered the Dementors while chasing the Snitch," Malfoy stuttered, still shaken. "Then Potter fell... I was just below him... my broom started descending uncontrollably... I struggled with all my might... and could only barely change its direction.
Oh, and the Dementors!"
He suddenly remembered something and looked up.
The Dementors were getting closer, seemingly eager for a feast.
Silver lights began to flicker in the stands as several upperclassmen cast their Patronus Charms, but only a few fully formed.
And amidst the hundreds of Dementors, these Patronuses could only protect a small area around the students, becoming less effective beyond that.
At the same time, three brighter silver lights shot out from the direction of the teachers' seats.
A cat, a weasel, and a swallow.
The professors' Patronuses soared into the air, their brilliant silver light enveloping most of the pitch, but there was still a small uncovered area.
"Severus! What are you waiting for? Do it now!" Professor McGonagall urged.
Seated next to her, Snape's expression was conflicted, but as the Dementors drew nearer, he gritted his teeth and raised his wand.
Before he could cast the spell, however, a new Patronus slowly drifted out.
Its body rippled like the surface of water, sending out waves of silver light that filled the last remaining gap.
Even when Snape had previously deducted points from Gryffindor House, she hadn't flown off the handle like this.
And Snape, knowing he was in the wrong, didn't try to argue.
Once things had calmed down, Professor McGonagall realized that she had no recollection of the Patronus that had suddenly appeared earlier, and she curiously examined it.
It had an umbrella-like body and several long tentacles underneath...
"A jellyfish?" She turned to Professor Sprout. "Do you know whose Patronus is a jellyfish?"
Professor Sprout shook her head.
"Could it be... Kyle?"
Professor Flitwick thought for a moment. "I recall Remus mentioning that Kyle cast a Patronus Charm on the train as well."
Professor McGonagall subconsciously looked towards the Hufflepuff section, but the rain was too heavy, obscuring her view.
...
"Kyle, is this your Patronus?"
On the stands, Connor looked up at the creature floating in mid-air, emitting silver light, and asked curiously.
Kyle nodded, "Yes."
"It's so beautiful..." Connor said softly.
Autumn, beside her, nodded in agreement.
Although Kyle's Patronus wasn't as powerful as the professors', it was the most beautiful one.
The silver body gently drifted, like a dancing sprite, captivating their gaze.
"Can our Patronuses be like this too?" Autumn asked longingly.
"Maybe even more beautiful," Connor said, a glint in her eye.
"Not necessarily." Kyle thought for a moment and said, "Everyone's Patronus is different, and no one knows what it will look like until it actually appears.
Perhaps your Patronus could be a toad or a caterpillar... it's not impossible."
The longing on Autumn's face vanished instantly, and the light in Connor's eyes dimmed as well.
They turned simultaneously and glared at Kyle with murderous intent.
"I promise..."
Connor gritted her teeth. "If my Patronus turns out to be a caterpillar, I will definitely kill you. Just you wait."
"Me too," Autumn chimed in.
"Hey, that's not my fault," Kyle explained. "I was just making an example."
"I don't care!" Connor snapped.
"Pfft..." Cedric couldn't hold back his laughter.
"What are you laughing at?" Autumn glared at him. "You're not off the hook either."
"Huh?"
Cedric's smile faded. "It's all because of Kyle. I didn't say anything."
"You laughed!"
"I..."
Seeing Cedric's bewildered expression, the others around them bit their lips, lowered their heads, and shrugged their shoulders.
Malfoy wanted to laugh as well, but when Connor shot him a glance, he quickly looked down and pinched his thigh hard.
"I was just giving Kyle some face... I'm not afraid of her," Malfoy thought to himself.
Kyle had just saved him from the out-of-control broom, and Connor was Kyle's friend. It was only right to give them some face...
Yes, that's right. That's exactly what it was.
Malfoy quickly convinced himself.
