Chapter 385: Is That So? Why Don't I Remember Anything?
Chapter 385: Is That So? Why Don't I Remember Anything?
After explaining to the new young wizards, Mcgonagall gathered the others and spoke.
"Alright, children, I think you're all very tired. Go to sleep quickly! However, the Prefects need to work a bit harder. You're responsible for managing and guarding."
The few Prefects nodded. Although they were extremely tired, they forced themselves to stay alert. Percy was especially energized, viewing this as both his duty and privilege as a Prefect!
Just as the young wizards were about to cozy up in their Sleeping Bags for a good night's sleep, Mcgonagall remembered something and called Ivan aside.
"Hals! You did a great job this time, calming everyone down and leading them to the common room, preventing a potential riot."
"Professor, it was my duty!" Ivan said humbly.
"So, as a professor, I also need to do my part, like giving you fifty points!" Professor Mcgonagall smiled, then patted his shoulder and continued.
"That's all I have to say. Go to sleep, you have classes tomorrow!"
"Okay!" Ivan nodded, turned around, and found a Sleeping Bag in the designated area. He quietly took out the note Sirius Black had given him from his pocket and opened it inside the Sleeping Bag.
As he expected, the back of the note had a message from Sirius Black, instructing him to meet at the Passage under the Whomping Willow at dusk the next day.
After reading the note, Ivan quickly put it away to avoid being discovered. He soon succumbed to sleep.
The night passed in a flash.
The next morning, around six or seven, Professor Mcgonagall woke the drowsy young wizards. While they were tidying up, she informed them that the professors had searched Hogwarts but had not found Sirius Black.
Hearing this news, the young wizards were filled with worry. Even when going to the bathroom, they went in large groups, afraid of being alone and falling victim to any danger.
While Sirius Black was targeting Harry, everyone knew he was a dangerous criminal who might go on a killing spree and attack others.
This led to a tense atmosphere throughout the day at Hogwarts. Everyone was discussing Sirius Black, speculating how he had managed to sneak into the castle, and the theories became increasingly bizarre.
For example, Hannah Abbott from Hufflepuff boldly suggested that Sirius Black could turn into a flowering shrub. However, when others asked how a shrub could have legs to run into the school, Hannah stuttered and couldn't provide an answer.
On the other hand, Seamus's theory was widely accepted. He believed that Sirius Black was an emotionless killing machine, a complete lunatic, and thus the Dementors couldn't sense his presence.
Ron, during his free time, enthusiastically told interested young wizards about how terrifying Sirius Black was and how they had scared him away.
In Ron's story, the biggest hero was his pet rat, Scabbers. It was Scabbers's heart-wrenching squeals that woke everyone in the dorm, preventing Sirius Black's evil assassination plan from succeeding.
For a moment, the gray-black rat almost became a hero of Gryffindor in Ron's mouth.
At first, the Gryffindor young wizards listened with great interest, but when Ron retold the story for the seventh time, making it more and more exaggerated, claiming that his rat had scared away Sirius Black just by glaring at him, everyone started to treat it as a joke.
Peter Pettigrew himself was utterly confused.
What? Did he scare away Black? But why couldn't he remember anything?
He only heard about Sirius Black's intrusion from the young wizards' conversations in the morning.
Ron's exaggerated story made Peter think that Ron was just making it up, but he soon realized something was off. Last night's incident was so significant; he shouldn't have slept so soundly.
As Peter delved deeper into his thoughts, he didn't notice a pair of orange-yellow eyes staring at him. A moment later, a cat's paw slowly extended and suddenly slapped his tail.
Startled, Peter turned his head and saw a furry cat face. He immediately forgot about his confused thoughts and let out a scream, trying to escape.
But Crookshanks's paw was firmly pressing down on his tail, making it impossible for Peter to move. The orange-yellow eyes examined Scabbers' body, as if deciding where to take a bite!
"Hey, you damn cat!" Thankfully, Ron noticed this in time and quickly slapped Crookshanks' paw away, rescuing his rat.
Crookshanks tried to pounce again, but just as he jumped, Hermione scooped him up, leaving him to flail his limbs helplessly in the air.
"Stop it, Crookshanks!" Hermione patted Crookshanks' big head angrily and then looked at Ron's rat, about to ask with concern when Ron snapped at her.
"Keep your stupid cat under control! It almost killed Scabbers. You better keep it away from me!"
"Crookshanks is just doing what cats do. You know they like to catch rats!" Hermione huffed.
Seeing the two about to argue, Harry hurriedly intervened. Ron finally calmed down, but he still had a sour expression.
Hermione refused to acknowledge him at all!
Hermione was already unhappy with Ron exaggerating his pet rat into a hero who scared away Sirius Black. From what she learned from Harry, Ron and his rat did nothing but scream!
Moreover, Ivan had woken up long before Scabbers started screaming. She believed that Sirius Black's hasty escape was likely related to Ivan.
Otherwise, a few screaming young wizards wouldn't have been enough to stop the ruthless Sirius Black. He could have killed Harry and escaped.
"Strange, where's Ivan?" Hermione looked around but couldn't see Ivan anywhere.
"Maybe he went to the library?" Harry shook his head and guessed.
Neither of them noticed a gray-white owl flying past the Windows, glancing at them before heading toward the Whomping Willow by the lake.
