Chapter 384: Fish Efficiency Boost
Chapter 384: Fish Efficiency Boost
Kaku didn't respond to his words but instead looked around, marveling, "It's so bustling here. I've always heard about this place but never had the chance to visit. Hey, Gabra, you're living quite a life here. I wonder if your strength has diminished."
"Rest assured, I'm stronger than you!" Gabra said with a challenging smile. "Want to have a little competition?"
"Forget it. I didn't come here to indulge in such trivial matters with you," Kaku shook his head. "As an agent, I have more important things to attend to. Where's Captain Sage?"
Gabra was about to continue his provocation but then fixed his gaze on Kaku, furrowing his brows slightly. He glanced at the people moving in the port area ahead, thought for a moment, and then turned and shouted, "You guys, get back to work!"
As he spoke, he strode off to one side, heading into the royal capital from the port city.
The city had been rebuilt earlier, and the walls were demolished, leaving only an arched gate to separate the port area from the royal capital.
Gabra easily made his way through the city, turning several corners until he reached an empty alley and came to a stop.
"I'm glad your skills as an agent haven't diminished," a voice sounded from behind as Kaku stood there with his arms crossed, leaning against the wall, and grinning at Gabra.
"I'm glad your hiding skills haven't deteriorated either," Kaku said, grinning at Gabra.
Gabra turned around with a fiendish grin, "You came here in person instead of calling, and now you're hiding in an empty alley. Are you afraid of being discovered? Speaking of which, there are many agents hiding here, and we don't even know who they all are."
Gabra might be a bit foolish in his actions, but when it came to his professional skills as an agent, he was very experienced.
Kaku's earlier actions immediately raised his suspicions.
These agents didn't have time for catching up.
Kaku was definitely up to something, and since he didn't use a telebug, it meant his communication might be monitored.
Arriving here and deliberately hiding to avoid being seen by others indicated that he was keeping this matter from the World Government.
"It's common for rats to exist among all types of great pirates," Kaku said indifferently. "Especially for a captain who doesn't care about anything, I've heard he recruits pirates without considering their background and dares to use anyone."
"That's good. As an agent, when you infiltrate someone, you must do your job with utmost dedication," Gabra shrugged. "However, we have ways to identify them, and we have a general idea, so there's no need to worry."
"I'm not worried. We're agents, not the World Government," Kaku said. "Where's the captain? I have something to report, and I don't have much time."
"The direction I'm taking you is just ahead. Let's leave the city first; there's still some distance to cover," Gabra said with a smile.
"Just make sure you don't fall behind," Gabra said, and with a flash of his feet, his body turned into a fleeting shadow and disappeared.
"I've already said I have no interest in competing with you in such trivial matters," Kaku said, slightly lowering his top hat, and followed Gabra as he vanished.
In the vast Storm City, two fleeting shadows moved like ghosts through the deserted alleys, creating gusts of wind that rustled the curtains of the surrounding buildings, the clothes on the drying racks, and the hanging noodles. They moved swiftly through Storm City and headed straight for the outskirts.
On an island, in a grassy area above a river, Sage sat on a gemstone-studded stool, holding a golden fishing rod painted with gold lacquer, and staring intently at the river ahead without moving a muscle.
Beside him, Belana had laid out a picnic blanket with various exquisite dishes. She opened a bottle of wine, poured a glass, and then walked behind Sage, whispering, "Sir, lunch is ready."
"There's no rush, look."
The river water was relatively clear, and one could see the fish swimming beneath the surface, following the current.
Sage intently watched a fish circling the bait, and with excitement, he exclaimed, "It's about to bite! We'll have a roasted fish for dinner. Don't call Marika over. As my first catch, it deserves her most luxurious cooking!"
"Shh, keep your voice down! Quiet! Hey, you two at the back, put some more effort into it! Ulki, start your prayer, Hawkins, begin your Doro!"
Further behind them, Hawkins and Ulki stood side by side. Hearing this, they exchanged a glance and sighed in unison.
Ulki raised his palm and said, "Will this really work? How many times has it been? The captain and the fish just don't have any luck."
"So-le-wa-do-ka-na."
Hawkins took out his tarot cards, "Fate is meant to be defied. At least there's a chance with Doro!"
He shuffled the cards quickly and drew one from the top, then displayed it outwards, "Major Arcana, Magician, it can make things more efficient."
Yes, he had activated his ability! Simple divination was useless, even with Ulki's prayer, a 1% to 2% chance was as good as nothing.
After they had resolved the issue and returned here, they took a break for a while before accompanying Sage on a fishing trip.
Today was already the fifth day.
The key point was that they had been at the same spot for five days. Some idiot had leaked that this river was teeming with fish, but it used to be private property of the nobility, and no one was allowed to do anything here.
However, after Sage arrived, all restrictions were lifted. Although it still belonged to him, Sage allowed anyone to take from nature as long as they acknowledged him as the landowner.
So, from time to time, villagers from nearby would come and cast their lines, adding a touch of wild flavor to their meals.
Sage had witnessed it himself; a little boy with a crudely made wooden stick, tied with a rope instead of a fishing line, using a simple string with a worm, and immediately caught a fish.
This sight had made Sage envious, and he decided to set up camp right there.
Even after five consecutive days of catching nothing, he remained patient.
It had only been five days; there was no need to get agitated yet.
If a child could catch fish easily, then Sage, a master fisherman with top-notch gear, from rod to bait to equipment, couldn't possibly fail.
A temporary setback didn't faze Sage; he had perseverance! He even brought along Hawkins and Ulki to enhance his chances.
And so, these two had been waiting with him for five days, and nothing had happened.
Hawkins was exasperated and decided to use his ability today.
His Devil Fruit power, when used well, could also bring about miracles.
"It's biting! It's biting!"
Just as the ability was activated, Sage saw the large green fish circling the bait about to open its mouth to bite the hook. He immediately cried out in delight.
"Captain!"
Suddenly, a somewhat foolish, raspy voice sounded from behind, and Sage wasn't sure if it was the sound waves or the rushing river, but the fish seemed to sense something. It closed its mouth, which was about to bite the hook, and with a flick of its tail, it swam downstream with the current.
Leaving Sage with a frozen expression.
The fish had become more efficient and swallowed the hook, then escaped.
Sage blinked a few times, then suddenly turned and glared at the person behind him.
"Damn it, which idiot did that? My fish was on the hook!"
