Chapter 383: Sigrid's Declaration of Sovereignty
Chapter 383: Sigrid's Declaration of Sovereignty
In the depths of night within a grand mansion, the lights in the living room shone unusually bright, as if defying the encroaching darkness of the stormy night outside.
Thanks to the soundproof magic devices placed on the cabinets, no one inside could hear the intensity of the rain or the rolling thunder that might have accompanied it.
In this usually relaxed and comfortable living room, the atmosphere between the two women and one man was as taut as a drawn bowstring, ready to snap at any moment.
The gazes of Hiberian and Sigrid locked onto each other with unwavering determination and a clear intent to vie for dominance, like two sharp swords crossing paths in the space between them, where Lanchi stood.
Neither was willing to yield an inch, and the air was thick with the calm before the storm.
"Meow! You two..."
Just as the Cat Boss was about to try and mediate, he was met with the simultaneous gaze of both Sigrid and Hiberian, causing him to shrink back in fear and tremble as he hid under the sofa again.
It was a palpable killing intent.
Whether it was Sigrid's icy, frost-like eyes or Hiberian's gaze filled with rage, both conveyed an unyielding stance.
Cat Boss was now friends with both Hubao and Xide, and at the thought of having to take sides if things were to escalate, he couldn't help but tremble in fear!
"This is my final warning. Let go of my Holy Son."
Sigrid's voice grew even colder, and she began to exert more force on his arm.
"How dare you say that when you've known him for at most two months? Aren't you ashamed?"
Hiberian became increasingly aggressive, or perhaps this was how she had always spoken to Lanchi when they first met.
"Holy Son, tell her, are you mine or not?"
Sigrid turned to Lanchi and asked, rarely using a questioning tone, as if not accepting any answer but the one she expected.
"..."
Lanchi took a deep breath, intending to mediate, but Hiberian's confused and furrowed brows stopped him.
"...Holy Son?"
Hiberian felt that Sigrid was deceiving her.
But at this moment, it also provided a plausible explanation for Lanchi's cooperation with the Hegemony Branch.
If he already held a high position within the Hegemony Branch, then everything made sense!
Hiberian's eyes widened in disbelief as she stared at Lanchi, as if seeking an explanation from him.
If Lanchi were to affirm Sigrid's statement, she would feel like her world was crashing down around her.
After all, he had once been so firmly opposed to the Resurrection Church in the Southern Continent.
"I am now a member of the Hegemony Branch. For the sake of saving the Protoss Empire, the Protoss Royal Magic Academy and the Hegemony Branch are now inseparable allies."
Lanchi helplessly allowed Hiberian to continue grasping his arm, unsure himself why she was so resistant to the Resurrection Church.
When they had parted ways, they had agreed to infiltrate the Extinction Branch together, but when they met again, she seemed to have become dead set against the Resurrection Church.
"No... You, you really joined the Resurrection Church?"
Hiberian felt that Lanchi's involvement went beyond mere infiltration.
If he were just infiltrating, he would have given her some hint by now instead of openly bringing her to the Hegemony Branch's base within the school, as if he intended to sincerely collaborate with them.
"Of course, he has sworn an oath to never betray the Resurrection Church in this lifetime."
Sigrid glanced at Lanchi, her tone slightly triumphant as she answered on his behalf.
"You must have been coerced."
Hiberian couldn't believe it. What had this woman fed Lanchi to bring him before the Resurrection Church and make him swear allegiance to them?
Upon learning of Lanchi's encounter with the formidable members of the Hegemony Branch, Hiberian knew that he was at their mercy and would have to agree to join them to survive.
"He did so willingly," Sigrid asserted confidently.
"You must be joking!" Hiberian exclaimed. But no matter what this woman, Xide, said, Lanchi didn't utter a single word of rebuttal.
"Say something!" Hiberian pleaded, her eyes fixed on Lanchi. Her voice trembled as she added, "If you're being forced, just blink, and I'll understand."
"... " Lanchi's calm gaze, however, showed no signs of panic, as if silently confirming that Sigrid's words were mostly true.
Hiberian shook her head, unable to fathom the events of the past two months. How could the person she trusted the most have joined the Resurrection Church and become entangled with a woman from the Hegemony Branch?
"Do you understand now? Don't touch what doesn't belong to you," Sigrid said to Hiberian.
"He's not your possession!" Hiberian still hadn't let go of Lanchi's arm. She knew that if Lanchi ever strayed down the wrong path, she would be the only one who could pull him back from the abyss.
Then she turned to face Lanchi. "No matter what you say today, I will never collaborate with the Resurrection Church. I swear by the name of the Goddess that I will not betray my faith for personal reasons." There were tears in Hiberian's eyes as she spoke resolutely to Lanchi, laying her cards on the table and revealing why she had reacted so strongly upon learning of his involvement with the Resurrection Church and how heartbroken she truly was.
"Goddess... Are you a follower of the Fate Goddess Church?" Sigrid frowned, staring at Hiberian with a newfound realization.
"In that case, we have nothing to cooperate on. Whatever he says now is meaningless. I will show you who's in charge here today," Sigrid coldly retorted, finding it absurd that the Holy Son had brought a spy from the Fate Goddess Church into their home. She decided that going forward, she would have to be more careful about letting him interact with other women; he was too easily deceived.
"You are the Holy Son's friend, so I won't kill you. But if you still don't understand who he belongs to, I'll teach you a lesson you won't forget," Sigrid said, her eyes narrowing as she glared at Hiberian's hand. Her icy gaze left no room for further patience.
"Are you challenging me to a duel? I accept," Hiberian replied defiantly, refusing to back down as she stared directly into Sigrid's eyes. If they were going to fight, it would be in the semi-restricted or unrestricted zones—a battle to determine not only their skills but also their fates.
"You're not worthy of a duel with me. Furthermore, he has an obligation to protect me," Sigrid stated.
"Do you really think he's bewitched by you?" Hiberian countered.
"Just watch, and you'll see that he will protect me if I'm truly in danger!" Sigrid argued.
"He won't protect you; he'll only protect me!" they exclaimed simultaneously, their voices growing more intense and overlapping as neither waited for the other to finish. Their argument escalated into a chaotic exchange, far more agitated than their earlier conversation.
Finally, they both turned to Lanchi, who had remained silent throughout their heated exchange, their angry gazes demanding to know whom he would side with.
This was one question he couldn't brush off with vague answers.
Cat Boss realized that the stalemate had finally reached its climax.
