Chapter 383: A Brush With Darkness
Chapter 383: A Brush With Darkness
"Don't worry, Filius, it's not a case of magical exhaustion this time," Madam Pomfrey said with relief after examining Mikkel's condition in the school hospital. "He's unconscious, but his body is fine. There's no major issue. A few days of rest after he wakes up should do the trick."
"That's a relief," Professor Flitwick said, patting his chest. "What about the other student?"
"I think she was startled, which caused her spell to go awry. She'll also need a few days of rest."
Madam Pomfrey frowned. "Filius, may I ask what spell they were practicing in class today? This student's magic has been stable for three years. How did it suddenly turn problematic today..."
In fact, Professor Flitwick also found it incredible and even felt a little wronged. He didn't understand how this could have happened.
If it had been some complex spell, he could have understood, but the Revelio Charm... This was one of the simplest spells in 'Standard Book of Spells, Grade 4'. It would be like giving away points in an exam.
It was baffling that they could manage the more challenging Summoning Charm but encounter problems with the Revelio Charm...
But, as they say, no harm, no foul.
Professor Flitwick turned to Kyle, who had accompanied the students to the hospital, and said, "Kyle, would you mind staying here to take care of them?"
"Not at all, Professor," Kyle agreed without hesitation. "Leave it to me. I'll make sure they're well looked after."
Professor Flitwick nodded and, after exchanging a few more words with Madam Pomfrey, hurried back to class.
...
"What did you say!"
At noon, in the corridor outside the Great Hall, Marcus Flint stared at Cedric, his face grave, and exclaimed, "Your Beater has been sent to the school hospital?"
"Yes," Cedric sighed. "We had all agreed to change the schedule, but Mikkel was so careless. He ended up injured in Charms class and had to be sent to the hospital. I just came back from there, and Madam Pomfrey said he needs a few days of rest."
"So..."
Cedric looked at Snape and said apologetically, "I'm sorry, Professor. If we change the schedule, we'll be one person short for tomorrow's match..."
Marcus Flint looked annoyed, but Cedric remained calm and collected. "If you don't believe me, you can go to the hospital and see for yourself. Or you can ask Professor Flitwick... He's the one who sent Mikkel and Aki Zhang to the hospital. Oh, and Aki Zhang is Ravenclaw's Seeker. She was affected by Mikkel's mistake, and her original spell went wrong too, so she's also being treated."
Upon hearing this news, Marcus Flint flew into a rage. He didn't even care that Cedric was still there and shouted, "It's all an act! There's no way it's a coincidence! I'm going to the hospital to expose them!"
With that, he stormed off towards the hospital.
Cedric didn't try to stop him and followed slowly behind.
As he walked past, he happened to see the scene of Flint being kicked out by Madam Pomfrey.
Of course, she wouldn't tolerate his unruly behavior in the school hospital.
"Now do you believe me?" Cedric said calmly. "It's ridiculous to think I could lie to you about something that so many people witnessed in Charms class."
Flint, in his rage, didn't even acknowledge what Cedric had said and continued shouting at the hospital, "They must have used one of Zachariah's devices! They're not really injured! It's all an act!"
Professor Snape also suspected as much.
But he couldn't very well say that out loud.
It was only to be expected that magic would backfire on Mikkel; after all, it was Draco who had brewed the potion to suppress his magical energy.
Moreover, he couldn't very well storm into the hospital wing and drag the two students out to make them play Quidditch... Professors Flitwick and Sprout weren't just there for show.
Everyone was putting on an act, and if this were to be investigated further, no one would come out unscathed. Moreover, the other party's reason seemed more plausible, with students from other years and Professor Flitwick there to vouch for them.
Unlike Malfoy, who merely had a bandage wrapped around his arm.
Snape let out a cold laugh as he looked at Cedric standing nearby, "It's quite surprising, Mr. Diggory. I would have thought that you would be more inclined to take care of your injured teammates."
"I would like to, Professor," Cedric said, "but as you can see, we're one person short, and there's nothing we can do about it. Of course, if you insist..."
He hesitated for a moment, then took a deep breath and continued, "We'll still agree to it, even if we only have six players. It's just one match, and as long as we can help Draco, that's all that matters."
Snape narrowed his eyes.
Cedric's current innocent act was all too familiar to him; it was reminiscent of a certain someone... and equally irritating.
Cedric hadn't been like this back in his first year.
"That won't be necessary," Snape said coldly, "The schedule for tomorrow remains unchanged. Let your teammates focus on recovering."
Marcus Flint turned, his face anxious, "Professor, they're faking it, if only..."
"Silence!" Snape barked.
He then turned and started to walk away, as if he couldn't wait to get out of there.
"Sorry, make way please, I need to go and visit our Beater."
As Marcus Flint fumed, Cedric walked into the hospital wing, but soon poked his head out again, a slow smile spreading across his face, "By the way, good luck for tomorrow's match."
"You..." Marcus Flint was seething, wishing he could land a punch on Cedric's face.
But Cedric had already gone back into the hospital wing, and all Marcus could do was clench his fists and glare furiously.
...
And so, the day of the match arrived.
Inside the hospital wing, Qiu and Mikkel suddenly made a full recovery, standing before Madam Pomfrey and requesting to be discharged.
Madam Pomfrey had been reluctant to agree at first, but seeing how energetic and lively they were, she eventually decided to give them a check-up before letting them go.
As expected, there were no issues, and she approved their request to leave.
"Just be more careful in the future," Madam Pomfrey said to Mikkel, "I recall that you've already mastered your magic, haven't you?"
"Maybe I was a bit too eager to complete the spell and got a little impatient," Mikkel said, "I promise it won't happen again."
Seeing Mikkel's sincere attitude, Madam Pomfrey didn't say anything further and simply nodded, allowing the two to leave.
"Sorry for causing you trouble," Qiu said politely.
Mikkel echoed his sentiment.
