Chapter 382: Calling an Ambulance
Chapter 382: Calling an Ambulance
After receiving his manuscript fee, Zhou Chenglei carried a box of books and walked out of the publishing house with Jiang Xia.
"There are steps ahead, be careful and watch your step," Zhou Chenglei reminded Jiang Xia.
His hands were full, so he couldn't hold her, fearing she might not notice the steps.
Jiang Xia, who was looking at Wen Wan standing beside their motorcycle, heard this and glanced down.
As the two approached the motorcycle, Wen Wan spoke softly, "Brother Zhou, Sister Xia, I don't feel well. Can I ride back to the village on your motorcycle? I get carsick in automobiles, and I threw up several times this morning. The smell in the car was too strong, and now that I'm pregnant, I can't stand any strange odors."
Wen Wan wasn't lying; she had been experiencing severe morning sickness lately, and any unusual smell would make her nauseous.
Just now, when she went to the bathroom in the publishing house, she felt nauseous from the smell, and now she couldn't even stand the smell of seafood, so she dared not go out to sea with Zhou Guohua.
The night before, she had even dreamed of Zhou Chenglei finding many gold bars, and although she had intended to go out to sea yesterday, she threw up as soon as she boarded the boat and couldn't go.
She wondered if they had found anything.
Probably not, she thought.
Jiang Xia glanced at Wen Wan; her face was indeed pale, and she looked at Zhou Chenglei, "I'll make a call."
Zhou Chenglei also looked at Wen Wan, noticing her pale face. He put the books on the ground and said to Jiang Xia, "I'll go. Wait for me a moment."
Then he turned and strode back.
Jiang Xia watched Wen Wan; not only was her face pale, but she also seemed weak. Fearing she might have low blood sugar, Jiang Xia handed her a large white rabbit candy, "If you feel unwell, you should see a doctor. I'll call the village for you, and we'll have Zhou Guohua come to pick you up."
Wen Wan almost rolled her eyes; what good would it do to have Zhou Guohua come?
Would he ride his bicycle over to pick her up?
Riding a bicycle on these bumpy roads would only make things worse!
She didn't take the candy from Jiang Xia, "No need! It's just morning sickness, and my face only looks bad because I just threw up. It's fine if you give me a ride back. I just need to lie down."
Jiang Xia didn't respond and ate her candy. With such a pale face, who would dare to give her a ride? Who would take responsibility if something happened?
Under these circumstances, sending her to the hospital was the most appropriate course of action.
"Didn't you ever feel nauseous?" Wen Wan asked, walking away a little in disgust, and then she couldn't help but scrutinize Jiang Xia.
Today, Jiang Xia wore a black woolen coat over a high-collared sweater in Christmas red, which made her fair skin look even more translucent and rosy. In the sunlight, her skin was as delicate as jade.
How could someone become more beautiful each time you saw them?
Jiang Xia, with the candy in her mouth, said softly, "No."
Aside from having a bigger appetite and being sleepier, she didn't feel any different. Like a pig, she could eat and sleep a lot.
Thinking about this, Jiang Xia felt she was probably carrying three little pigs who were greedy and lazy.
Even Wen Wan couldn't help but envy Jiang Xia. Due to her morning sickness, she couldn't eat or sleep well, and her skin had deteriorated.
However, everyone said that a naughty child would give their mother a hard time, and it was always a boy. Boys were mischievous.
Zhou Guohua's mother had even given her a gold ring as a reward, and she would get a gold bracelet after the baby was born.
Wen Wan had heard that women's skin often improved during pregnancy, and most of the time, they were carrying girls.
As Jiang Xia's pregnancy progressed, she became even more beautiful. Was she carrying a girl?
In this era, the villagers valued boys over girls. If Jiang Xia gave birth to a girl, would Zhou Chenglei dislike her? Would Zhou's parents still like her?
At this moment, Zhou Chenglei came out and said to Wen Wan, "I'll go."
Wen Wan: "..."
"You called an ambulance for me?" Wen Wan exclaimed in disbelief.
"But you're feeling unwell," Zhou Chenglei said without looking at her, bending down to distribute the books into two baskets.
Her face was so pale, and he didn't know the reason.
Zhou Chenglei was worried she might faint at any moment.
Of course, calling an ambulance was the right thing to do.
Wen Wan was furious, "I don't need to go to the hospital. I'm just having morning sickness, it's not necessary. You can just drop me home on your way!"
"The ambulance is already on its way, and I've informed your family. Zhou Guohua is rushing over."
At that moment, a white vehicle stopped in front of them.
The City First Hospital was just over a hundred meters away, so the ambulance arrived quickly.
A nurse jumped out of the vehicle, "Where's the patient?"
Jiang Xia pointed at Wen Wan, "She's pregnant and feeling unwell. We've informed her family."
Wen Wan insisted, "I'm just having morning sickness, I don't need to go to the hospital."
The doctor examined her and noticed her pale complexion, "Have you been vomiting severely? Have you not eaten all day? Let's go to the hospital, get some nutritional injections, and oxygen therapy!"
The nurse added, "You need to pay 2 yuan for the ambulance first."
Jiang Xia turned to Wen Wan, knowing she had some royalties from her writing but unsure of the amount, "Do you have any money on you? Do you need to borrow some?"
Wen Wan was so angry she didn't want to speak. She took out 2 yuan and handed it to the nurse, then climbed into the ambulance herself.
She would prove that there was nothing wrong with her! She shouldn't have asked this heartless couple for help, wasting a few yuan on a hospital visit and injections!
Jiang Xia spoke to Wen Wan in the ambulance, "You should still get a check-up, consider it a prenatal exam. Zhou Guohua will be here soon."
Wen Wan turned her head away, refusing to engage with them.
The ambulance drove off, and the hospital was just across the street. Jiang Xia watched as the ambulance entered the hospital.
Zhou Chenglei put away his book, started his motorcycle, and said to Jiang Xia, "Let's go."
"Okay." Jiang Xia took his outstretched hand and climbed onto the motorcycle, "Ready."
Zhou Chenglei stepped on the clutch, released the handbrake, and accelerated away.
Leaving the publishing house, Zhou Chenglei rode his motorcycle towards the military hospital.
Jiang Xia noticed their route and said, "It's only the second month, let's wait until next month! There's not much to see now."
Previously, a colleague at work had also gone for prenatal check-ups, and they started various tests around three or four months.
Zhou Chenglei replied, "Since we're already in the city, let's have Dr. Gao take a look at how our baby is doing."
Jiang Xia agreed, sensing his excessive anxiety. A check-up might ease his mind.
She had indeed been feeling great lately, eating and sleeping well, with no discomfort.
"Give me some water, I'm thirsty."
Zhou Chenglei stopped the motorcycle to the side, twisted open the water bottle cap, and handed it to Jiang Xia.
He could easily ride the motorcycle with one hand, leaving the other free to hold the water bottle.
But he still found a safe spot to stop and waited for her to finish drinking.
After Jiang Xia finished, she returned the water bottle to him.
Zhou Chenglei took it, feeling the bottle was half as heavy, "Are you very thirsty?"
Jiang Xia replied, "I'm not thirsty, but I think I need to do an ultrasound soon! I guess the baby is still small, and I might need to hold my urine for the scan."
Zhou Chenglei was genuinely unaware, "Should you drink more then?"
Jiang Xia wasn't entirely sure either, but she recalled a colleague mentioning it before, "No need. Even at the hospital, it's not like they'll do it immediately; I don't know if there's a queue."
"Probably not." But Zhou Chenglei was still concerned about Jiang Xia holding her urine for too long. He started the motorcycle and turned to her, "Are you ready? I'm driving."
"Yes, I'm ready."
Zhou Chenglei drove off on the motorcycle.
Fifteen minutes later, Dr. Gao smiled at the couple, "I'm ninety percent sure it's triplets. However, let's confirm with an ultrasound. Are you feeling an urgent need to urinate?"
Jiang Xia nodded, "A little."
Dr. Gao stood up and personally led Jiang Xia to the ultrasound room.
