Chapter 38: The Xie Couple
Chapter 38: The Xie Couple
Upon hearing that Lu Jiaxin wanted to find the human traffickers, Xie Kaixiao frowned and said, "Isn't that absurd? If even the police can't find them, how can she?"
Mrs. Xie sighed and said, "This child's personality has changed drastically after being kidnapped. No one can stop her from finding the traffickers. All we can do is find trustworthy people to protect her."
Two days before Lu Jiaxin disappeared, she fainted due to a heart condition. Fortunately, a nurse in the household discovered her in time and saved her life. The doctor advised her to rest and avoid any emotional triggers.
Once her condition stabilized, Mrs. Xie learned of Lu Jiaxin's disappearance and called her husband, only to find out that he had known about it immediately and arranged for people to look for her, but to no avail.
Just as she was worrying, she suddenly heard that the child had returned. She was delighted that the child had escaped unharmed, but then she received news that Lu Jiaxin had moved to Guangming Road. Soon after, she learned that the child had failed the college entrance exam and had almost been abducted by human traffickers, all due to the stepmother's doing.
In fact, when the rumor first spread that Lu Jiaxin had run away from home due to her exam failure, Mrs. Xie felt that the situation was not that simple. Based on her understanding of the child, she knew that while Lu Jiaxin might become despondent and lose motivation after failing the exam, she would never run away from home out of spite. However, without any clues, they couldn't uncover the reason for her disappearance. As it turned out, her suspicions were correct, and the mother-daughter pair had indeed orchestrated the whole thing. Unfortunately, although Lu Jiaxin had revealed the truth, there was no evidence to punish the deceitful pair.
Xie Kaixiao asked doubtfully, "Do you support the idea of her finding the traffickers herself? If even the police can't find them, do you think she'll be able to?"
He felt guilty towards Lu Jiaxin. If it hadn't been for his mother trying to save his son, she wouldn't have died. If Lu's mother were still alive, the child would have continued to live a carefree life. Unlike now, where she was being bullied by her stepmother and neglected by her father, even facing a near-death experience not long ago.
Mrs. Xie remained silent for a moment before bringing up the incident with Su Heming, "He thought it was a fake watch and wore it as a joke. If it weren't for Lu Jiaxin's timely reminder, he would still be flaunting that Rolex worth over 100,000 yuan."
Xie Kaixiao's expression turned serious, "What did you say? Someone gave Heming a Rolex, and its origin is unclear?"
"What's wrong?" Mrs. Xie asked.
Xie Kaixiao said, "A month ago, a wealthy businessman from Nanyang was robbed in Pengcheng. He lost over 100,000 yuan in green bills and the valuables he was carrying, including a Rolex watch. After the incident, the businessman felt that the security in the country was poor and returned home the next day, canceling all his planned investments."
"Hongying, that businessman had a Rolex among the items that were robbed from him. The case remains unsolved."
With a value of over 100,000 yuan in cash and valuables, this was considered a major case. However, the perpetrators were itinerant criminals, and they hadn't been caught yet.
Mrs. Xie's face changed, "Do you mean the Rolex Heming was wearing could be the one that was robbed from the wealthy businessman?"
Xie Kaixiao believed it was highly likely, but without evidence, he wouldn't make any conclusions, "I'll have someone look into this matter. Hongying, where is the watch now?"
Mrs. Xie said with relief, "After I found out about this, I had him buy a fake one at a high price and put the real one away. A few days later, Heming got drunk with his friends and gave the watch to one of them."
The next day, when he was sober, his friend wanted to return the watch, but Su Heming laughed it off and didn't take it back.
Xie Kaixiao breathed a sigh of relief and said, "Nowadays, there's a severe crackdown on criminals. If someone tries to make a fuss about that watch, we might all get implicated."
Mrs. Xie's expression turned solemn, and she lowered her head apologetically, "Kaixiao, I'm sorry. I knew you've been busy lately and didn't want to burden you further. From now on, I'll tell you about anything that happens immediately."
Seeing that he wasn't angry, Mrs. Xie said, "Kaixiao, I think Jiaxin is very perceptive and knows how to handle herself. Perhaps she might really be able to find the traffickers in the ancient capital."
Ever since she gave birth to her son, her health had deteriorated, and she developed heart palpitations. Sometimes, the condition tortured her to the point where she wanted to end her life. But for the sake of her son, she gritted her teeth and persevered. She never expected those heartless people to harm her son, and it was only thanks to Ding Xiaoxia that her son's life was saved. However, Lu Jiaxin's situation after Ding Xiaoxia's death frightened her. For the sake of her son, no matter how difficult it was, she would persevere, until her son got married and had children of his own.
Two days later, Su Heming brought two men to meet with Lu Jiaxin. He explained, "Nowadays, there are many traffickers out there, some of whom specifically target young girls. One bodyguard might not be enough, so I've found two more to help."
He then introduced the men. The taller one was called Zhao Dajun, and the slightly shorter one was Gu Wenfeng. Both men were sturdy and muscular, evident from the bulging veins on their arms.
Lu Jiaxin was very polite and greeted them respectfully, "Brothers Zhao and Gu, I apologize for the trouble I may cause you in the coming days."
Gu Wenfeng indicated that he was merely following orders and that she didn't need to be so formal, "Miss Lu, Brother Heming told me about your encounter with the traffickers. This time, you want to go to the ancient capital to find them? Miss Lu, traffickers are very cunning."
If it were that easy to find traffickers, the police station wouldn't be piled up with so many missing persons' cases.
Lu Jiaxin said, "I've been having nightmares these past few days. If I don't catch that old woman, I'll continue to have these nightmares, and I may never have a peaceful night's sleep for the rest of my life."
Gu Wenfeng said, "Miss Lu, forgive me for being blunt, but I believe your trip will be in vain."
"I won't be at peace if I don't go," Lu Jiaxin replied.
She knew the old woman's appearance and had already drawn a picture of her. While it might not be exactly the same, it was at least an eight or nine out of ten match. She refused to believe that they couldn't find the old woman with the drawing.
She hadn't told anyone about this, not even Xue Mao. It was her ace in the hole, and she intended to keep it that way.
Seeing her determination, Gu Wenfeng didn't try to dissuade her further. Their job was to protect Lu Jiaxin, and if they noticed any problems, they would remind her. But if she didn't listen, there was nothing they could do.
Xue Mao's eyes lit up when he heard that the two men knew martial arts, and he asked the more talkative one, Zhao Dajun, "Brother Zhao, are you soldiers?"
Lu Jiaxin felt helpless. She knew that they probably weren't soldiers. If they were military men, they wouldn't be here to protect them on their trip to the ancient capital.
Zhao Dajun explained that he used to be a soldier but had been discharged recently and was waiting for a new assignment. This task had been recommended by his cousin, and he hadn't wanted to come himself.
Lu Jiaxin was aware that there would be a large-scale military downsizing in the coming years. Currently, discharged soldiers could still be assigned jobs, but it would become more difficult in the future. Relatively speaking, Zhao Dajun was still lucky.
