Chapter 38: The Unicorn in the Forbidden Forest
Chapter 38: The Unicorn in the Forbidden Forest
As Liam was lost in the beauty of the scene, the lead unicorn suddenly let out a whinny, as if it had sensed something.
At the sound of the whinny, all the unicorns turned their heads in the direction where Liam was hiding.
Liam swallowed nervously. He knew that even a fully grown werewolf would be no match for a unicorn, let alone a group of five or six. Even a dragon would have a tough time with them.
Running away was out of the question. In the forest, humans could never outpace these nature spirits. So Liam decided to face the unicorns directly. After all, unicorns were known to be benevolent creatures and unlikely to harm the innocent.
With this thought, Liam pushed aside the branches and stepped out into the clearing where the unicorns were gathered. He stood there, facing the group across the open space.
Tension made Liam lose track of time. It could have been a long while, or just a moment. Finally, the lead unicorn averted its gaze, and the others relaxed, though they remained in the clearing.
Liam let out a long breath and sat down on the grass, watching the unicorns' movements. Even for wizards, encountering a group of unicorns in the wild was a rare opportunity.
As the unicorns moved about, Liam noticed that one of them had a wound on its right leg, with a thin black mist emanating from the injury, and silver blood dripping continuously.
Seeing this, Liam stood up and slowly approached the group of unicorns. They became restless and watched him with wary eyes.
Liam stopped about four or five meters away from the unicorns and said, "I see that one of you has an injured leg, and it looks like it was caused by dark magic. It will be difficult to heal. I have a sickle and some other items that might help."
Unicorns were known to be intelligent and pure magical creatures, so Liam tried to explain his intentions, hoping they would understand and respond.
After about ten seconds, the lead unicorn made a friendly sound, indicating that it accepted Liam's good intentions, but it refused to let him come any closer.
It turned out that the legend was true—unicorns only allowed females to approach. Liam had thought they might make an exception in an emergency. He couldn't understand why unicorns made such a distinction between human genders when they weren't even the same species.
Since he couldn't get closer, Liam placed a new lantern plant on the ground and a leaf filled with several dozen sunlight crystals beside it.
With his growing expertise in cultivation and traditional Chinese medicine, Liam had discovered that the sunlight crystals produced by the sunlight sunflowers contained not just sunlight, but also light and life force. This power could effectively dispel and neutralize dark magic damage.
After placing the items, Liam stepped back about seven or eight paces and held out his hands to show he meant no harm.
Clearly, the unicorns, being magical creatures, could sense the light and life force within the items. The lead unicorn picked up the lantern plant and placed it near the injured unicorn's hind leg. Then it brought the leaf with the sunlight crystals to the injured unicorn's mouth.
The injured unicorn extended its tongue and licked up almost all the sunlight crystals, swallowing them. Then, the entire unicorn began to glow with a silvery-white light, like moonlight.
As these lights appeared, some black mist began to seep out of the wound on the Unicorn's hind leg.
The mist seemed to have a mind of its own, trying to burrow back into the wound, but it was quickly drawn to the Lantern Plant, where it transformed into light inside the lanterns. As the description of the Lantern Plant stated, while other Plants absorb light energy and release oxygen, the Lantern Plant absorbs darkness and emits light. Although this was neither scientific nor magical.
The reason the Unicorn's wound had not healed was due to the obstruction of Dark Magic. When the lingering Dark Magic, like a persistent parasite, was completely cleared away, a gentle silver light flashed. The wound on its leg was completely healed.
The lead Unicorn, witnessing this, let out a grateful neigh towards Liam, then led the small group of Unicorns into the forest, gradually disappearing.
As Liam observed, when the Unicorns left the clearing, the silver glow on their bodies slowly faded. By the time they reached the shadow of the trees where the moonlight couldn't reach, the silver glow had completely disappeared.
It turned out that the Unicorns had used the moonlight to activate their magic power to expel the Dark Magic attached to the wound.
Following this clue, Liam quickly pieced together the entire event. The Voldemort-Quirrell Union must have come out today to prolong their life by drinking the blood of the Unicorns. On one hand, it was possible that the Voldemort-Quirrell Union's condition had not yet deteriorated to the most severe point, so they did not kill and drain the Unicorns to avoid drawing Dumbledore's attention.
On the other hand, after injuring one Unicorn, the Voldemort-Quirrell Union might have attracted a group of Unicorns. Realizing they couldn't resolve the situation quickly, they chose to leave. The Unicorns, in turn, sought a safe place to heal their injured companion.
After confirming that the Unicorns had left, Liam found seven or eight Unicorn tail hairs at the spot where they had stood. Each one was worth ten Galleons, and he couldn't afford to waste them.
Stuffing these silvery tail hairs into his robe pocket, Liam felt that today's harvest was unexpectedly bountiful. He decided it was best to return to his bed in the dormitory as quickly as possible.
However, just as Liam turned around, he heard a large animal approaching. Before he could hide, a white figure darted past from the forest ahead.
Could it be that the Unicorns hadn't left, or was it another animal? After all, the Forbidden Forest was vast, and even Hagrid couldn't say for sure how many magical creatures lived there.
Unable to determine whether the approaching creature was hostile, Liam chose to lean against a rock and draw his wand, scanning his surroundings. He also took out two Lantern Plants, two Fire Dragon Grasses, and two Peashooters to set up a defensive line in front of him.
As he nervously watched the darkness of the forest, a soft laugh suddenly echoed through the trees.
Liam, tense, almost ordered the Plants to attack the source of the sound, but he managed to suppress his impulse. Without knowing whether the figure was friend or foe, a rash attack would not be wise. Besides, firing at the sound might miss the target and expose his position, putting him at a disadvantage in a real fight.
The atmosphere grew increasingly oppressive, and just as Liam was about to leave, the voice spoke again, in English: "Hey, little one, don't be alarmed. I won't harm you."
