Chapter 38: The Monkey Demon's Revenge
Chapter 38: The Monkey Demon's Revenge
"Let's go!"
With a grand wave of his hand, Liu Dianli led the group as they marched down the long street.
"Please, Shen Yi."
The thin monk stood with his hands behind his back, a smug smile on his face.
Shen Yi casually shut the door, a cold glint flashing in his eyes.
It was clear that this group had come prepared, not only with an excuse but also with an estimation of their own strength.
The dozen or so officers not only had swords at their hips but also held spears over ten feet long. The rest of the soldiers each carried strong bows and crossbows, which were ineffective against demons or martial artists. However, if the thin monk were to join the fray and distract them...
Even two werewolves would be lying defeated.
"I'd like to see what tricks you're up to," Zhang Tu Hu said, his face darkening as he stepped forward and stood behind Shen Yi.
At this, the thin monk's expression changed slightly, but he didn't stop them. Instead, he raised an eyebrow and smiled, "Suit yourself. I'm just here to accompany them, after all."
The conversation ended there.
The three of them walked in silence, their steps heavy as the onlooking pedestrians on the street stared at them in surprise. They were heading out of the city.
About thirty miles outside of Boyun County lay Shilin Village.
Liu Dianli's anxiety was evident as he hurried along with a furrowed brow, occasionally glancing back at Shen Yi with a growing intensity in his eyes.
"Are we getting rid of demons or are we getting rid of us?"
Even Zhang Dahuhu sensed that something was amiss and struggled forcefully.
Immediately, two spear tips moved towards him, the sharp points pressing against his neck and drawing two lines of blood.
"No, where are we going?"
Unlike Zhang Dahuhu, the Niu brothers didn't struggle. They watched as the group passed Shilin Village as if it weren't there and instead turned into a small path.
"Any further ahead and it'll be wasteland. Aren't you afraid of encountering demons?"
At these words, the thin monk gave a mocking smile and slowly stopped walking.
Almost simultaneously, everyone came to a halt. The officers and soldiers parted, making way, and then suddenly kicked the legs of the captives, causing them to stumble and kneel. Their necks were then pressed down by the cold blades.
One of the colleagues sighed and averted his gaze.
At the end of their vision, under the dim moonlight, a small thatched hut had appeared by the roadside.
A tall figure stood by a table, clad in coarse cloth with black hair covering his arms and sleeves. He was intently pouring wine into a bowl.
The one sitting down was small in stature, wearing a straw cape and a bamboo hat, his back to the group. He seemed to be having a midnight snack.
"This is bad, we're in trouble."
Zhang Butcher looked on with a hint of gravity.
He finally understood why his senior brother hadn't minded him tagging along. The two beings before them were both initial-stage demons.
The one sitting down had a slightly irritable aura, indicating that he had just broken through not long ago, but the thickness of his aura denoted that he had reached the perfect initial stage.
The standing one was slightly weaker, but still on par with Zhang Tu Hu. Even their builds were similar... Plus, there was the senior brother and the three to four dozen officers and soldiers.
Zhang Butcher had mingled for many years, and his experience was vast.
In the span of a breath, he made a decision, "Let's go!"
It's better to live and fight another day.
"I've brought the person you wanted," Liu Dianli stepped forward, mustering his courage to stand beside the thatched hut. "Those ape demons weren't killed by me, and I've helped cover up the fact that you abducted the young child... I know you're trying to lure him out... Ape Grandpa, I'm in my fifties and just had a son. Please return my son to me..."
"Shut up." The tall ape demon with the cloth clothes put down the wine pot and coldly glanced at him.
"Okay, okay, I'll shut up." Liu Dianli bent over and forced a smile, then waved his hand towards the people behind him.
The soldiers instantly aimed their strong bows at Shen Yi in the crowd.
Several spears simultaneously pressed down, blocking his escape route.
After wiping the corners of his mouth, the old ape turned his head and nodded politely, his voice hoarse as he said, "Thank you."
Pleased with the praise, Liu Dianli's face lit up with joy, but his gaze soon fell on the table, and he started to fidget with his fingers as he counted the skulls.
Immediately, his face turned deathly pale.
His body trembled like chaff, his legs turned soft, and he couldn't help but kneel on the ground.
Liu Dianli's Adam's apple bobbed as he struggled to speak, only able to let out inarticulate cries:
"Ah! Ah! Ah!"
Looking at the pile of skulls, Zhang Butcher's face twisted with anguish, and he suddenly turned to glare at the thin monk, "You scabby-headed fool, have you gone mad?"
"It has nothing to do with me," the thin monk frowned and spread his hands, "I didn't do anything. I'm just here under the county magistrate's orders to accompany Liu Dianli and investigate this matter tonight."
"If you really want to talk about it, you should ask Mr. Shen how he handles things!"
The thin monk contained his smile and turned his gaze to Shen Yi.
"Stop spouting bullshit! There are only four of us to look after 200,000 people in Boyun County, and we're helping the demons suppress information. If I were from the Demon Suppression Division, I would have chopped off these beasts' heads first!"
Zhang Butcher was furious and wanted to continue scolding, but he suddenly realized that someone was missing beside him.
He looked up.
And saw Shen Yi walking away silently, paying no heed to the long spears and strong bows beside him.
He walked up to Chen Ji, bent down, and drew his companion's sword.
"Let's go! There will be other chances!" Chen Ji had barely finished speaking when he was slapped back down by someone next to him.
The officer who moved against him stared at Shen Yi's profile, unable to utter a word for a long time.
Soon, the young man reached the arbor.
The two ape demons regarded him indifferently, and the younger, taller one sneered, "If you kneel now like he did, perhaps you'll have a chance to keep your corpse intact."
"Kill them for me, you fool! Aren't you always seeking attention? Now I, as your superior, order you to kill them!"
Liu Dianli went insane, tugging at his sleeves and howling like a wild animal.
Unfortunately, his pleas only lasted a moment before they turned into gurgling sounds as blood welled up in his throat.
With a flash of blade, his white-haired head tumbled to the ground.
Shen Yi stared at the two ape demons, and while Liu Dianli's body was still falling, he casually wiped the blade on the green robe the man had been wearing.
In the distance, the officers holding the long spears felt their palms grow sweaty.
The soldiers swallowed, their strong bows already aimed at the lone figure, arrows nocked but hesitating to release.
"What audacity!"
The thin monk was stunned for a moment before flying into a rage and charging forward.
He had been ordered to come tonight, not as the main force to assassinate Shen Yi, but to protect Liu Dianli and join the fray if necessary.
Who would have thought that this madman would stand before the two demons and kill Liu Dianli first, and even more infuriating, the two old apes just watched quietly!
If anyone else had seen this, they would have thought that the ambush tonight was meant for Liu Dianli.
As the thin monk flew into a rage, a thick arm lashed out, slamming into his chest without mercy.
The thin monk stumbled back a few steps, barely managing to steady himself, and roared, "You stupid dog, can't you see he killed someone?"
Zhang Butcher's face twisted with rage, and he swung his butcher's knife, slashing at the air, "Go to your mother!"
At the same time.
The indifferent gazes of the two ape demons finally stirred with emotion.
