Chapter 38: Summoning Magic
Chapter 38: Summoning Magic
Professor Flitwick was an experienced teacher, and he knew that most students had limited patience. After teaching some basic spell theory, he moved on to instructing the class on how to cast spells, with the first spell for the new students being the Lumos spell.
Lumos was one of the greatest spells invented in the 18th century and also one of the simplest and most practical spells in existence.
"Now, repeat after me, Lumos!" Professor Flitwick instructed the class as if he were teaching kindergarten children how to read.
"Lumos," the students chorused.
"Excellent! Now, simply lift your wand, give it a gentle tap, and say the spell, Lumos," Professor Flitwick demonstrated to the class. "Remember, the wand movement and correct pronunciation of the spell are crucial."
"All right, why don't we give it a try now?"
The classroom immediately filled with the sounds of students reciting the spell. Albert, of course, joined in the practice, pretending to learn the spell along with everyone else, even though he had already mastered it. He couldn't very well just sit there and do nothing while everyone else was practicing! "Look, Mr. Anderson has already succeeded! He has mastered this spell!" Professor Flitwick exclaimed. "Well done, five points to Gryffindor!"
All eyes turned to Albert, and he felt a bit uncomfortable under the intense gaze. He turned his head and glared at Lee Jordan, who was enthusiastically patting him on the shoulder.
In fact, quite a few students managed to light up their wands immediately, but they couldn't sustain it, and the light soon faded.
The twins, along with Lee Jordan, still hadn't completely mastered the spell by the end of the class. Diggory had managed to light up his wand, but it had gone out shortly after.
Of course, there was also a minor incident in the Spellcasting Classroom. A Hufflepuff student swung his wand with too much force, causing a flame to burst forth from the tip and setting the unfortunate student in front of him on fire.
The student was made to write lines by Professor Flitwick: "I am a wizard, not a baboon waving a stick."
Sana, with whom Albert had chatted that morning, was also struggling. After several failed attempts, her wand started emitting choking black smoke, and it was Professor Flitwick who had to use magic to clear it out of the classroom.
"I just can't get it," Sana said, looking desperate.
"Don't worry, everyone will have ample time to master this spell," Professor Flitwick reassured those who hadn't succeeded yet. "You need to maintain a calm mind and focus your attention."
Before the class ended, Professor Flitwick assigned homework.
"Your homework is to practice the Lumos spell. In the next class, we will continue to work on this spell and also learn its counter-spell."
Of course, for Albert, his homework was already done.
After class, Albert intentionally lingered at the back of the line. He wanted to ask Professor Flitwick some questions, specifically about how to use his wand to conjure an umbrella.
"Mr. Anderson, your copying spell is quite impressive," Professor Flitwick said with a smile as he appraised the student before him. "You have a natural talent for spellcasting."
"Thank you, Professor Flitwick," Albert accepted the praise graciously. "I'd like to ask you about a particular spell."
"What spell is that?"
"How can I conjure an umbrella from my wand?" Albert asked, intending to use this opportunity to learn that spell.
"Conjure an umbrella?" Professor Flitwick looked puzzled. "Why would you want to conjure an umbrella from your wand?"
"Well," Albert coughed, "it's been raining the past few days, and I thought it would be useful to be able to conjure an umbrella so I don't get wet." He said this with a straight face.
Professor Flitwick couldn't help but laugh. Some people learned spells just to make their lives easier, and Mr. Anderson here was undoubtedly one of them.
"Mr. Anderson, do you know what a spell is?" Professor Flitwick asked with a smile.
"A spell is an incantation that imbues a specific attribute onto an object or creature," Albert recited the spell theory he had just learned in class. In other words, conjuring an umbrella from a wand didn't fall under spellcasting?
"It seems you've understood the concept," Professor Flitwick nodded. "What you're talking about, conjuring an umbrella from your wand, is actually a type of summoning magic, a branch of Transfiguration."
"Summoning magic?" Albert had only heard of the Accio spell.
Professor Flitwick raised his wand and conjured a flower out of thin air.
"This is summoning magic," he explained. "The spell doesn't create something out of nothing. No one can create something from nothing. I merely summoned this flower from somewhere else."
"I see, so it's like the Scouring Charm, which just moves things out of sight, not truly making them disappear," Albert said, beginning to understand.
"Exactly, it seems you've been studying hard," Professor Flitwick was pleased that Albert comprehended. "Summoning magic is part of the O.W.L. exams. Its counterpart is the Vanishing Spell, which is a bit simpler. If you wish to delve further into this area of magic, I suggest you consult Professor McGonagall. She would be delighted to share her knowledge with you."
"Of course, if you have any questions about spellcasting, feel free to ask me," Professor Flitwick said, lifting a finger and gesturing to the three people waiting by the door. "You have another class coming up, don't be late."
"Professor, I have another question," Albert said.
Professor Flitwick remained silent, waiting for Albert to continue.
"Is it possible to store the light created by Lumos and use it when we're not able to use magic?" Albert asked, thinking that it might be related to Dumbledore's Deluminator.
"That's an interesting idea. As far as I know, it should be possible, but it's a bit advanced for you at the moment as it involves a lot of complex concepts," Professor Flitwick was impressed by Albert's question. "I'm curious, what made you think of this?"
"In the Muggle world, there's something called a flashlight," Albert explained. "It's like the Lumos spell, but you can turn it on or off according to your wishes."
As he spoke, Albert's tone paused as he noticed a new task on the panel.
Inventor of the Magic Lamp.
Young man, it seems you've stumbled upon an intriguing area of magic. Why not expand upon your idea? Research and create a magic lamp.
Reward: 3000 experience points, Lumos spell level +1, Nox spell level +1, Title: Inventor of the Magic Lamp.
After Albert left the classroom, George hurried forward and asked curiously, "What were you asking Professor Flitwick about?"
"How to use my wand to conjure an umbrella, of course," Albert replied.
"And?"
"Professor Flitwick said it's part of O.W.L. Transfiguration," Albert said, feeling a bit glum. He thought he might have to figure out a way to learn summoning magic.
"Looks like you won't be conjuring an umbrella anytime soon," Fred said with a laugh.
The four of them headed upstairs together toward the History of Magic classroom.
