Chapter 38: Dark Vision and Danger Perception
Chapter 38: Dark Vision and Danger Perception
Rayn couldn't help but rejoice. After carefully examining the system's description, he realized that he only fell short in the area of archery.
Over the past few days, although the daytime servant training included archery practice, Rayn had not used any skill points, so his archery was still at level 1 (12/100).
To reach level 2, he would need at least two to three months of effort.
After a moment's thought, Rayn decided to allocate a skill point to Basic Archery.
Although Rayn had originally planned to use this skill point for the core skill 'Smith's Strength' or 'Mammoth Breath Technique,' either choice would likely yield less benefit than a combat job change.
The reason was simple: when Rayn advanced from Blacksmith Apprentice to Blacksmith, he not only gained a boost in strength but also acquired a core skill.
Therefore, it was reasonable to assume that a job change from Militia to Night Watchman would likely bring attribute improvements and possibly new core skills.
Perhaps this change would bring about a qualitative transformation. If the Feral Werewolf were to launch a surprise attack at this moment, Rayn's current strength would be no match for it, leaving him unable to defend himself.
Why not change to a Squire? Time was of the essence, and life was precious.
Changing to a Night Watchman, a combat job clearly more powerful than a Militia, was the best choice for now.
Whether it was skill points, attribute points, or other job panels, as long as one was alive, there would always be opportunities in the future.
Rayn had thought this through thoroughly.
Previously, Rayn had a lingering question: was the job panel 'Militia' the only and final option?
Now it seemed that wasn't the case.
It was simply because he hadn't met the specific trigger conditions.
Previously, when advancing from Blacksmith Apprentice to Blacksmith, the trigger required an item - the Blacksmith's Hammer.
But this time, the trigger for becoming a Night Watchman was surprisingly simple: oiling the street lamps.
This left Rayn puzzled for a moment, unable to fathom the trigger for this job change or advancement.
Shaking his head, Rayn decided not to delve into this question for now.
The most important thing was to complete the job change first.
He hoped it would bring him a pleasant surprise!
[Militia job change to Night Watchman, all conditions met. Do you wish to change jobs?]
[Note: Changing to Night Watchman will replace the Militia job panel.]
Without hesitation, Rayn selected 'Yes.'
[Ding! Job change successful!]
[Night Watchman job change successful! Strength +1, Agility +1, Spirit +1! Acquired Night Watchman core skills: Danger Perception Lv.1 (Passive) and Dark Vision (Passive).]
[Danger Perception Lv.1 (Passive): Due to the Night Watchman's constant night patrols, your perception of danger is extraordinary.]
[Dark Vision (Passive): As Night Watchmen often operate in the dark, your vision in low-light or no-light conditions is comparable to that of nocturnal animals.]
Surprisingly, three attributes were increased, and both core skills were passive!
Rayn was a bit taken aback as the 'Militia' on his job panel disappeared, replaced by the bold words 'Night Watchman.'
Below the panel title, in addition to existing icons like 'Mammoth Breath Technique' and 'Grizzly Sword Technique,' two new icons appeared.
The borders of the two new icons lit up, and Rayn focused on the one with an eye-shaped icon, causing a line of small text to appear below it.
[Core Skill: Dark Vision (Passive)]
Dark Vision (Passive) Effect: Your vision in no-light or low-light environments is significantly enhanced, almost on par with nocturnal animals.
After reading the skill description, Rayn looked around, and indeed, things seemed different. He felt an inexplicable sense of familiarity and warmth in this nighttime environment.
At the same time, he looked at the dark areas beyond the reach of the street lamps, places he couldn't see clearly before.
But now, the feeling he got was almost as clear as his vision during the evening. Although it was a bit dim, Rayn could see very well.
For example, in that dark corner, a rat had just emerged from its hole and was sniffing around for food. A cockroach had just crawled into the pile of trash in the shadows.
Rayn immediately understood the significance of this passive ability.
This allowed Rayn to fight in the night as if he had a night-vision device, its usefulness was evident!
Additionally, Rayn quickly noticed that there was no experience bar below this icon.
This indicated that the passive skill, Dark Vision, could not be upgraded through skill points.
"Hey, Rayn? What's wrong?" The Elite Nightwatchman beside him noticed Rayn's sudden pause and asked.
"Oh, nothing. I just thought of something." Rayn quickly responded, realizing he had momentarily focused on the newly appeared Nightwatchman panel, causing him to space out slightly.
"Since you've made your choice, let's continue forward." The Elite Nightwatchman called out.
"Okay."
As Rayn walked forward, he contemplated.
[Core Skill: Danger Perception lv1 (Passive)]
Danger Perception lv1 (Passive) Effect: Your perception of surrounding dangers is slightly enhanced.
(Note: The sharpness of danger perception is related to the host's spirit. The stronger the spirit, the sharper the perception.)
After a moment's thought, Rayn felt that this core skill was the greatest gain of the night.
If Dark Vision directly gave Rayn night-vision-like capabilities, then Danger Perception provided Rayn with an animal-like intuition for danger.
In a sense, this ability's importance was undeniable. In this extraordinary world, uncontrollable events were not uncommon, like the Feral Werewolf incident Rayn had just encountered.
Without the ability to confront it head-on, being able to detect and avoid danger beforehand was the primary survival rule for most animals.
Rayn believed this applied to himself as well, especially before he became stronger.
Rayn and several Elite Nightwatchmen patrolled cautiously for most of the night. Until dawn, they didn't find any traces of the Feral Werewolf, nor did they hear any distress signals from other Nightwatchmen.
It seemed that the Feral Werewolf hadn't appeared in Glint Town or Habsburg Manor last night.
Just as Rayn and the others were about to end their night patrol and return to rest, a messenger rushed over to inform them to gather at the Administration Hall. Sheriff Hamilton would personally lead a joint team from Habsburg Manor into Nightsong Forest to hunt down the monster.
After a moment's thought, Rayn decided to go and witness it.
Although Rayn didn't know who would lead the Habsburg Manor team, it was likely to be Sir Lloyd, a knight as strong as Sheriff Hamilton, or Instructor Perez.
With several such knight-level experts leading, along with numerous Elite Nightwatchmen and manor guards, Rayn felt the risk was manageable.
Most importantly, Rayn's strength had further increased after his Nightwatchman promotion, and he was eager to see what a battle between true powerhouses looked like.
Additionally, although the deceased pages weren't closely related to Rayn, their deaths still left him with a heavy heart. After all, they had eaten and trained together, and now they were suddenly gone.
If safety was assured, Rayn didn't mind giving that monster a good beating!
