Chapter 379: The Big Man
Chapter 379: The Big Man
Barrow Gardner, one of the only two people currently in the laboratory, had access to the facility even when Karl wasn't around.
"Drip..."
The security door slid open, revealing a spacious interior.
"Gulp..."
Barrow's throat constricted, and his palms began to sweat. Despite knowing the lab was empty, his pupils dilated, and his heart raced with fear as if countless eyes were watching him from all directions.
Growing up as an honest and obedient child, he couldn't help but feel terrified at the prospect of breaking the rules and facing severe punishment.
The safe!
Reagent Seven!
Standing at the entrance, Barrow trembled, but he couldn't bring himself to take a step forward.
"Hiss..."
A cold, emotionless voice echoed in his ear:
"What are you waiting for?"
"If I go in and retrieve the item, the poison will invade my heart. Even the best doctors couldn't save you here."
"What...what are you?" Barrow stammered, "Are you human or a ghost?"
Ever since Professor Jim had bitten him, Barrow had been plagued by this unseen presence, only able to hear its voice.
The voice,
seemed to resonate directly in his mind, tormenting him day and night.
"Does it matter?"
The voice chuckled softly,
"For you, the most important thing right now is to get the item and exchange it for the antidote to save your life."
"Do it!"
"The lab is currently unoccupied, so it's safe. But if you delay any longer, that might not be the case."
Barrow sighed helplessly, his heart feeling like dead ashes, and stepped into the lab. He retrieved Reagent Seven from the cabinet.
"Is this it?"
"Yes!"
The voice was filled with excitement:
"Hurry!"
"Get out of here quickly."
He had to hurry, as the lab was equipped with cameras, and every move he made might be under someone's watchful eye.
"Okay."
Placing the reagent in his inner pocket, Barrow turned and headed for the exit, unconsciously quickening his pace.
The lab was located on the fourth floor.
As he approached the elevator, it opened, and two well-dressed white men stepped out.
The big man had an imposing physique, towering over two meters tall, his muscular build evident even beneath his loose-fitting suit.
They would definitely excel in a bodybuilding competition.'
Just as Barrow lowered his head to enter the elevator, one of the white men extended his hand to stop him.
"Barrow Gardner?"
"Hmm?"
Barrow was taken aback, "That's me."
"Security Department," the big man said, flashing a badge and offering a gentle smile, "Please come with us for an investigation."
Barrow's body stiffened, as if doused with a bucket of cold water. He felt like an ice sculpture, frozen from head to toe.
He hadn't realized that the school's security department had such a big man, nor had he heard of any investigations.
His mind was filled with only one thought.
It's over!
They've discovered my theft from the lab.
"Swish!"
Before he could snap out of his daze, a liquid shot out from Barrow's shoulder, piercing the big man's chest.
"Cough!"
The liquid instantly solidified into a sharp cone, penetrating the man's heart. The immense force sent the big man flying.
Seizing the moment, Barrow swept the other man aside with a horizontal swing.
"Run!"
The voice in his mind roared,
"Take the stairs!"
"Ah!"
Barrow was stunned, his consciousness not fully recovered, but instead, he stared at the scene before him in disbelief.
"Murder!"
"Murder..."
"Shut up!" The voice bellowed,
"He's not dead. If you don't leave now, you'll be the one who dies!"
"Cough, cough!"
As they spoke, the big man with the pierced heart stood up, brushing off his clothes. He coughed lightly and said, "I didn't expect an ordinary person to be infested with a monster."
"You... you're not dead?" Barrow's expression was one of utter shock, as the events of the past few days had completely shattered his understanding of the world.
"It's fine," the burly man said with a faint smile. "Just be careful, it might hurt a little."
As he took a few large steps forward, his fist clenched and struck out.
"Boom!"
A terrifying blast of air hit Barrow, making him feel as if his entire body was being blown away, and the fist hadn't even reached him yet.
It was just the wind from the punch!
"Damn it!"
The voice in Barrow's mind screamed, and he immediately felt his body twist, like a spiritual snake, dodging the burly man's fist and rushing towards the laboratory. Then, he quickly lashed out with his tentacle-like limbs, smashing into various machines.
Immediately after.

"Beep... beep..."
An ear-piercing electronic sound rang out, accompanied by various red lights.
"Damn!" Barrow's expression changed drastically, and he yelled, "It's going to explode!"
Before he could finish his sentence—
"Boom!"
Blinding light and scorching heat erupted, causing Barrow's body to tremble and feel intense pain. He stumbled backward.
In his vision, he saw two figures colliding at an incredible speed, fighting fiercely, and then he passed out.
"Boom!"
A massive fire erupted on the fourth floor of the laboratory building, and the sound of the explosion reverberated throughout the entire campus, prompting Karl and Riley to rush downstairs.
"What's happening?"
"I don't know!"
"Call the police!"
"Call the fire department!"
"..."
Various chaotic voices filled the air as Karl pushed through the crowd, making his way towards the laboratory building, which was now engulfed in flames.
"Professor Karl, don't go near there! Wait for the fire department!"
Karl waved his hand at Riley, saying, "I'll stay in a safe place and observe."
The explosions above didn't stop; the flames seemed to touch something, causing a continuous eruption of fire.
Fortunately, there were no chemicals or special materials nearby, or else the radiation would have spread by now.
"Bang!"
A charred figure fell heavily to the ground.
Karl's eyes narrowed slightly as he slowly approached, shaking his head silently at the figure on the ground.
"Barrow, how did you get yourself into this state?"
Barrow lay on the ground, his skin carbonized by the high temperatures, and one of his eyes was blind.
In his buzzing ears, he faintly heard a familiar voice. He struggled to open his eyes, his throat moving.
'I'm going to die,' he realized, but strangely, he wasn't as afraid as he thought he would be.
In fact,
His tension was less than when he was stealing in the laboratory.
Instead, a sense of nameless sorrow emerged, and he eventually sighed helplessly, closing his eyes slowly.
Karl stroked his chin, his eyes fixed on the other's chest.
'Right there.'
An unknown liquid was seeping into Barrow's body, gradually merging with his flesh and blood.
At the same time,
Barrow's carbonized skin and flesh, shattered organs, and internal organs were healing at an astonishing rate.
In just a few breaths, he was mostly healed.
'Interesting!'
'Mixing so many genes together, and there's no rejection. It must be the effect of an extraordinary power.'
'Hmm...'
'From this, it seems Professor Jim's experiment was successful.'
'Professor Karl?'
At this moment, a calm voice sounded:
"Sheriff Chris, I need to take him to the hospital."
"Oh!"
Karl turned and spoke to the disheveled burly man, "I'll trouble you. Barrow is a good kid, please save him."
"Of course."
The burly man nodded, and when his gaze fell on Barrow, a hint of surprise flashed in his eyes. He nodded again:
"He'll be fine."
