Chapter 377: The Calamity Pokemon Reversal Plan
Chapter 377: The Calamity Pokemon Reversal Plan
Naoki: "..."
What the hell, historical research?!
Naoki's gaze turned to the bag of coins. The ancient coins shone with a golden luster, exuding the scent of wealth.
So, you're telling me she took away someone's burial items in the name of research?
Noticing his stare, Rehe smiled and said, "To use a professional term, what I do is archaeology. To be honest, I'm very interested in the stories and legends of the past."
"And the reason I took these ancient coins was to study the monetary system of the ancient Padia Kingdom from thousands of years ago. As you know, I'm a history teacher."
Naoki was speechless. Her explanation made sense, but it still sounded odd.
"So, what are you doing now?" he asked.
Rehe shrugged, "I'm done with my research, and these coins no longer hold any value for me. So, I plan to give them to those in need."
"Like you," she added with a smile.
Fair enough! Naoki didn't ask further, as he truly needed those coins.
Changing the subject, he brought up the main issue. "How many coins are there in total?"
"Hmm." Rehe shook her head. "I'm not entirely sure either. I acquired these coins from over a dozen tombs and ruins separately."
"Then, how much do you plan to sell each coin for?" Naoki asked.
Rehe thought for a moment, a smile spreading across her face. "According to the prices in the antiquities market, each ancient coin is worth 50,000 Pokedollars. But since you're buying such a large quantity, I can give you a little discount! However, you have to tell me what you plan to use them for."
Naoki countered with a question, "Have you heard of a Pokemon called Money King?"
"Money King?" Rehe was slightly taken aback, then exclaimed in surprise, "You mean the Pokemon that is said to evolve from Greed Spirit?"
Naoki nodded. "Someone told me that to evolve a Greed Spirit into a Money King, you need to collect a certain amount of coins."
Rehe understood. Pondering for a moment, she murmured, "So, you plan to attempt that evolution..."
She had heard of Greed Spirit before. It was said to have been born from the greed of adventurers thousands of years ago.
As a history teacher with a deep interest in ancient legends and history, Rehe was quite knowledgeable about such matters.
"That's right," Naoki affirmed with a nod.
"I understand," Rehe said softly. "In that case, I'll give you a 30% discount. Consider it my contribution to verifying the legend of Greed Spirit. So, if your Greed Spirit evolves, you must let me see it!"
"No problem," Naoki readily agreed. Now he was starting to believe that Rehe's tomb raiding wasn't just for money.
If it were, she could have demanded a much higher price.
Moreover, from what he knew of Rehe's background in the game, she had a genuine interest in those historical legends. Despite being a teacher at the school, she often felt the urge to go out and unravel the mysteries of ancient tales.
If it weren't for Principal Craver watching her, she might have resorted to extreme measures to satisfy her curiosity.
"Now do you believe that I don't raid tombs just for money?" Rehe asked, seeing through Naoki's thoughts.
"I do," Naoki nodded.
Rehe smiled faintly and continued, "Moreover, I wasn't lying to you about my reputation in the tomb-raiding world, either."
"Even among the tomb raiders, I'm quite famous. I once ventured to the deepest depths of the renowned Undersea Ruins in the Unova region in one breath!"
"Although I'm semi-retired now, my legend still persists in the world of tomb raiding!"
Naoki: "..."
What the hell, semi-retired?! So, Rehe still goes out tomb raiding occasionally, doesn't she? Naoki couldn't help but think, though he didn't show it on his face.
He nodded and turned his attention to Rehe's attire, noticing something quite interesting.
The pendant on Rehe's chest bore a striking resemblance to the legendary Pokemon Articuno, and the headwear she donned looked very much like that of Maxie, the Team Magma Leader.
The bracelet on her wrist, on the other hand, clearly had elements of Kapoera.
"Let's count them together!" Rehe emptied the bag of coins onto the table.
A small mountain of gold now lay before Naoki.
His first thought was that a Greed Spirit would be overjoyed to see so many coins.
The two of them then began to tally the ancient coins.
Time passed slowly as they counted, and it was only after about three minutes that Naoki finally had the exact count.
142.
A total of 142 coins.
He wondered if there were any other ways to obtain more coins.
"In total, there are 142 League Coins, originally worth 7.1 million, but with the discount, it comes out to be 4.97 million," Rehe calculated using the calculator she carried with her.
Naoki snapped out of his thoughts and nodded; he had already gotten a great deal, and he couldn't haggle further.
"Alright, I don't have that much cash on me right now. Let's go to the bank, and I'll transfer the money to you," he said.
Thankfully, before coming here, he had specifically sold the sheep's milk and crops stored in his warehouse, and with his savings, he barely had enough.
"Sure," Rehe nodded with a light laugh.
The two left the cafe and headed straight to the bank, where Naoki transferred the money to Rehe.
Rehe, in turn, handed over the bag of coins to him, saying, "You can keep the bag too."
Naoki glanced at it; it was just an ordinary hiking bag, so he didn't pay it much mind. "Thanks then."
Rehe yawned; she had stayed up late the previous night reading ancient texts in the Padia Academy library and was feeling sleepy now.
"Alright, I'm heading back to catch some sleep. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me on the forum," she said.
"Will do," Naoki said, looking down at the bag in his hands and falling into thought.
Each coin was worth 50,000 Pokedollars, so a thousand would amount to 50 million. If he were to buy them with money, he'd have to work hard for several years to earn that amount.
No wonder it was called Money King...
But thinking about the rarity of the Money King Pokemon, Naoki felt that all his efforts would be worth it.
Especially since the Greed Spirit would be able to create its own coins after evolving into a Money King, and he could then slowly sell some to recoup his investment.
Gold Rush, an exclusive move of the Money King.
It was somewhat similar to Meowth's Payday, both being money-making moves.
After parting ways with Rehe, it was already 1:00 in the afternoon.
Naoki and Gurdleton hadn't eaten lunch yet, so they bought a couple of sandwiches on the way and headed back to the ranch.
Naoki, with the hiking bag on his back, pushed open the wooden door of the Pokemon Tavern and unzipped the bag, turning it upside down.
"Clink, clink, clink!"
A pile of coins tumbled out like a rainfall onto the bar counter.
At the sound, the Greed Spirit immediately poked its head out of the treasure chest.
When it saw the enormous number of coins Naoki had brought, it was utterly shocked.
This was immediately followed by elation.
"Ding-a-ling!"
"Take them!" Naoki smiled.
The Greed Spirit's heart was filled with excitement and joy, its emotions overwhelming any fear it might have felt. It forgot all about its trepidation and jumped out of the treasure chest.
Transforming into its Bipedal Form, the Greed Spirit leaped onto Naoki's shoulder and gave him a big kiss on the cheek.
"Huh? Ah!"
Naoki quickly reacted, a smile spreading across his face. The Greed Spirit was indeed overjoyed!
"Happy?" Naoki asked.
Greed Spirit: (^o^)
"Alright, alright, let's put these coins into the treasure chest first," Naoki said.
He picked up the treasure chest where the Greed Spirit usually stayed and placed it on the bar counter. Then, he opened it and began putting the pile of coins inside.
The Greed Spirit watched excitedly from the side.
Once all the coins were in, the Greed Spirit dove in with a plop, burying itself in the pile of coins except for its head.
It looked as though the Greed Spirit was swimming in an ocean of coins.
Naoki stood by, watching this scene with a slight smile tugging at his lips.
"I'm a bit tired; I'll take a rest first. See you later!"
The Greed Spirit turned its head towards him and happily said, "Ding-a-ling!"
Naoki put the Greed Spirit's treasure chest back in its original place before leaving the Pokemon Tavern.
He went back into the house, drank some water, and then went upstairs to turn on his computer to check on the acquisition post.
Having only collected a tenth of the ancient coins so far, Naoki intended to keep the post up, thinking that perhaps other cash-strapped tomb raiders would see it and contact him in the future.
After browsing through the forum posts, Naoki opened the private chat interface.
Looking at the private chat column of '[Ancient Explorer]', he fell into deep thought.
Rehe, the Calamity Pokemon...
Naoki remembered the legend and origins of the four Calamity Pokemon.
Legend has it that during the ancient Padia Kingdom era, a merchant brought four treasures from the East: a cauldron, a sword, bamboo slips, and jade. He sold these treasures to the king.
However, that very night, the four treasures suddenly transformed into Pokemon and wreaked havoc, ultimately destroying the entire royal city.
Later, the surviving king investigated the merchant and the four treasures.
It was eventually discovered that the four treasures were not real artifacts but Pokemon in disguise, having absorbed a multitude of desires and curses over the years as they traveled from place to place.
It is said that only those without any impurities in their hearts can unlock the seals and summon the four Pokemon.
These are the Ancient Cauldron Deer, the Ancient Jade Fish, the Ancient Scroll Snail, and the Ancient Sword Leopard.
In the game, Rehe had always been investigating this matter.
She consulted a large number of ancient books, historical disaster records, and personal diaries... eventually confirming the authenticity of this legend.
She revealed the locations of the shrines and the method to unlock the seals to the game's protagonist, asking him to help liberate the four Pokemon.
Naoki had once considered taming these four Pokemon, but gave up on the idea because they would bring calamity to the ranch.
Now, however, with the Reversal Series dishes he made using water from Giratina's house, he might be able to reverse the calamitous traits of these four Pokemon.
Reversing them into auspicious and bountiful divine beasts.
Allow the Ancient Scroll Snail, which absorbs the energy of plants and trees, causing the surrounding forests to wither instantly and crops in the fields to fail, to become a divine beast that provides energy to the forests and trees, bringing abundance to the crops in the fields.
Let the Ancient Cauldron Deer, which causes earthquakes and cracks the ground, become skilled in manipulating earth energy, tilling the land, and making it suitable for growth.
Let the Ancient Jade Fish, which controls 3000-degree flames and melts rocks and gravel to form lava seas, in which it swims leisurely and comfortably, become a flame Pokemon that can start fires and cook meals, bringing warmth to the ranch Pokemon.
Let the Ancient Sword Leopard, which can cause avalanches and control ice and snow, become an evil-vanquishing, ranch-protecting guardian Pokemon.
If one wants to capture these four Pokemon, the prerequisite is to establish a good relationship with Rehe.
Because only Rehe knows the exact locations of the four shrines and how to unlock the seals.
The four artifacts of calamity are what Rehe has always dreamed of. Her goal is to investigate them and make them her own.
But...
Naoki couldn't bring himself to deliberately pursue someone just to capture these Pokemon.
Moreover, it felt too fake, and he would have a sense of guilt for deceiving the other person.
After some thought, Naoki abandoned this plan.
"Forget it, I'll just let things take their natural course!"
With that in mind, Naoki prepared to shut down the computer and go downstairs for a nap.
However, just then, his chat window suddenly flickered.
Naoki was taken aback for a moment, then clicked to view the message with his mouse.
Then he saw several messages from Rehe.
[Ancient Explorer: !!!]
[Ancient Explorer: I just went to the library to look up some information and found the ancient notebook that records the legend of the Winged Great King. Based on the description, I discovered that the Gurdleton that has been following you lately bears a striking resemblance to it in certain aspects!]
[Ancient Explorer: Where did you catch it?]
These three consecutive messages left Naoki a little bewildered.
He thought for a moment and replied: [It broke into my ranch, and I treated its injuries. Since then, it has stayed on my ranch.]
[Ancient Explorer: ...What do you mean?]
Naoki didn't know if he could reveal the research being conducted by Dr. Olin and Dr. Fort.
After a moment of silence, he replied conservatively: [I'm sorry, but this matter involves some privacy and confidential information that I cannot disclose.]
Desk Table City, Padia Academy, Teacher's Dormitory.
In the dimly lit room, Rehe frowned, her eyes wide, her mouth slightly agape, staring at the computer screen in shock at the reply.
[Winged Great King: But I can tell you that Gurdleton is not a Pokemon from this era. Just as you thought, it comes from a distant past.]
"Not a Pokemon from this era?!" Rehe murmured, "What does that mean?"
Did Gurdleton travel through time?
Or had it been sleeping in some ancient ruins all this time, only to awaken in modern times? Or perhaps it was an ancient Pokemon resurrected from a fossil?
At that moment, Rehe's mind raced with possibilities.
But what surprised her even more was that the content recorded in this ancient notebook, which had ended up in the second-hand market, turned out to be true!
