Chapter 375: The Vampire
Chapter 375: The Vampire
A vibrant, peach-colored sports car came to a halt at the entrance of the nightclub, and a pair of long, slender legs wrapped in black stockings emerged from within. The sleek, pointed-toe shoes sparkled with crystals, emitting a dazzling glow. Monica flicked her golden, wavy locks and gestured with an outstretched hand.
"Professor Karl, please get out of the car!"
"There's no need for this," Karl sighed, stepping out of the passenger seat. Dressed in a formal suit, he seemed entirely out of place amidst the bustling street. "At my age, such places are no longer suitable. And please, don't call me 'Professor'."
'Professor' was a title of respect, reserved for scholars who had made significant contributions to their field or those at the pinnacle of academia in top-tier institutions. Karl, who had yet to achieve any notable research success, certainly didn't fit the bill.
"With your theoretical prowess, Professor Karl, it's only a matter of time before you earn that title," Monica said with a smile. "It's an honor to have you here, and we must celebrate."
"Please!"
Unlike her daytime attire of formal wear and high-society elegance, Monica now showcased her exaggerated figure, exuding sexiness, vibrancy, and a graceful allure. The bold lipstick and heavy eye makeup didn't make her look tawdry; instead, they accentuated her youthful vitality. As for Karl...
His hair was streaked with white, his cheeks etched with wrinkles, and his gait was slow, already embracing the posture of an elder.
"Your Highness!"
"Park the car!" Monica tossed the car keys to an approaching waiter and, with a twist of her body, entered the nightclub.
"Professor Karl, your colleagues have been waiting inside for quite some time," she called out.
"Oh well!" Karl sighed, stepping forward.
"Thud!"
"Creak..."
Beyond two iron gates, designed for soundproofing and security, a kaleidoscope of lights and a cacophony of noises greeted them.
"Over here!" Monica shouted ahead.
Despite their proximity, the volume was such that they had to yell to be heard, indicating the chaos of sounds.
Karl's mouth twitched. He genuinely struggled to comprehend why anyone would enjoy such a place, especially since he had loved it in his youth.
Weaving through the crowd of gyrating bodies, Monica led Karl by the hand, navigating the darkness until they reached a private booth. Several young people were already seated there.
"Monica!"
"Riley!"
"Blaze!"
"..."
"Let me introduce you," Monica said, pulling Karl forward. "This is Professor Karl, a researcher in biodiversity. He'll be your colleague from now on."
Karl opened his mouth, not correcting the misnomer, and waved at the group.
"Karl Bergman, a part-time teacher and researcher," he introduced himself.
"Teaching is part-time," Monica added, placing a hand on Karl's shoulder. "Research is your main focus, and that's why I paid a hefty sum to have you here. I'm expecting great results from your work."
"Monica," Karl shrugged, "it's best to manage your expectations. Not all research yields success."
"That's true," a man named Blaze agreed, standing up to shake Karl's hand. "Most research is a process of trial and error."
"That's because you have the money," Monica pouted. "When you invest in yourself, there's no rush for results. I, on the other hand, am an investor."
"Heh..." Blaze chuckled. "What area of research are you in, Mr. Karl?"
"The origins of life," Karl replied, shaking hands with Riley, who had vibrant blue hair. He then found a seat. "I study the impact of DNA and RNA on various tissues and organs in organisms."
"Oh!" Blaze raised an eyebrow. "Research in this field is often theoretical. I'm surprised Monica is willing to invest in it."
Monica rolled her eyes.
"So, what exactly are DNA and RNA?" Riley asked curiously.
"Mr. Karl, please forgive my ignorance on the subject. I'm just a history teacher at the college," Riley explained.
"They are related, you can understand them in terms of gene regulation and genetic information," Karl replied.
"Current research shows that genetic information is primarily determined by DNA, but I have a different view..."
"Oh!" Blaze straightened up.
"Why?"
"The functions of various organs in the human body are different, yet they all originate from the same place. And the selection of genes is crucial," Karl explained.
"According to current theories, genetic information is fixed, and certain congenital conditions like six fingers or deformities are rare gene mutations..."
"The selection of genetic information is essential, and DNA..."
