Chapter 374: Rayquaza Picks the Stars
Chapter 374: Rayquaza Picks the Stars
Rayquaza!
It's Rayquaza!
Naoki instantly recognized the dragon-type Pokemon that suddenly appeared before them, and it was even a shiny one!
Rayquaza's massive form dominated the sky as its gaze swept swiftly across the ranch.
Naoki distinctly felt Rayquaza's gaze fall upon them, and the palpable, overwhelming pressure that accompanied it caused him to tense up instantly.
What was going on? How did Rayquaza end up here?
He clearly hadn't cooked anything with that scale yet!
However, Naoki soon found out the answer as he spotted Dragonite flying over from the other side of the river, howling and roaring at Rayquaza.
Hearing Dragonite's calls, Rayquaza shifted its gaze from them and turned its head toward the excited dragon.
Then, it twisted its sleek, black body and flew toward Dragonite. The two Pokemon landed together in the Snorlax Park, seemingly up to something unknown.
Naoki: "..."
Alright, now he understood why Rayquaza had shown up at the ranch.
Naoki couldn't help but feel exasperated by Dragonite's behavior.
It had actually summoned Rayquaza, and it had barely been a day since they last met. It hadn't even been a full twenty-four hours.
Upon seeing Rayquaza, Motostoke's attention was immediately captured.
It gazed longingly in the direction of Snorlax Park, as if it, too, wanted to join in on the fun.
Motostoke turned to Naoki with hopeful eyes, "Gaou..."
Naoki waved his hand helplessly, "Fine, fine! Go ahead."
Motostoke scampered off happily.
The Hakutons followed curiously, trailing after the lizard Pokemon.
In an instant, only Naoki, Golett, and Lilligant remained in the grassy field.
Unfazed by the sudden appearance of Rayquaza, Golett showed no signs of surprise and didn't seem interested in joining the gathering.
Lilligant, too, remained unmoved, her thoughts drifting to the future she had once glimpsed.
In that vision, a black dragon-type Pokemon soared around the World Tree, towering in the sky.
"I didn't expect it to come so soon," Lilligant murmured, a hint of surprise in her voice.
She had assumed it would be a much longer time before their paths crossed again.
"It really gave me a fright," Naoki admitted, a hint of helplessness in his tone.
He never expected this world's Rayquaza to be so trustworthy and so...free from other commitments.
However, upon further reflection, Naoki realized that Rayquaza didn't really have much to do in its daily life besides eating and sleeping, leading a rather boring existence.
Given that, it was only natural that Rayquaza would be intrigued and curious when a group of Pokemon that admired it suddenly sought it out, praising it and wanting to hear more of its stories.
Seeing that things had calmed down on this side, Lilligant floated back into the living room, intending to continue watching television.
Naoki stood in place, his eyes fixed on Snorlax Park across the river, unsure of what he should do next.
Rayquaza's unexpected visit had thrown a wrench into his plans for the day.
Rayquaza—a legendary Pokemon, a mythical creature that most humans would never lay eyes on in their entire lives.
Naoki was incredibly curious about what this group of Pokemon would discuss with Rayquaza.
He thought for a moment, then ate a few Translation Melon Seeds, bringing Golett along with him under the pretext of weeding the apple orchard. In reality, they were going to sneak over and observe the gathering of Rayquaza and the other Pokemon.
Naoki donned a straw hat and crossed the river to the other side.
Meanwhile, Frosty Nixie, Papa Cubone, and a host of other Pokemon who had never seen Rayquaza before were in the midst of lavishing praise on the legendary dragon.
"Mama!" (So amazing!)
"Barbarbar!" (I want to become a great hero, too!)
"Buu!"
The Eevee's eyes sparkled as it gazed up at the dragon-type Pokemon before it, feeling that dragon-types might not be as evil as they were made out to be in Naoki's stories.
And Rayquaza had even saved the world! It was truly awe-inspiring!
It wanted to be that strong, but could an Eevee evolve into a dragon-type Pokemon?
Eevee turned to Glaceon, its eyes full of questions, "Buu buu?"
"Buu..." Glaceon shook its head, indicating it had no idea either. After a moment's thought, it suggested, "Buu." (We can ask Naoki later.)
Eevee's eyes lit up at the idea, "Buu!"
The group of Pokemon sat around a blue-striped picnic blanket, and Dragonite pointed to the food laid out, inviting Rayquaza to eat.
"Roar!"
And so, when Naoki approached, he witnessed Rayquaza lowering its head and delicately picking up an Energy Cube from the blanket with its mouth before swallowing it.
Naoki wasn't sure how to feel as he watched this scene unfold.
Rayquaza was actually eating the food he had made...
Were Dragonite and the others hosting a feast for Rayquaza?
Naoki suddenly noticed the picnic blanket and the food laid out in the center, surrounded by the captivated Pokemon.
It was then that a Pokemon finally noticed Naoki and Golett.
Frosty Nixie happily ran over and exclaimed, "Mama!" (Naoki, you're here!)
"Yes, I came to tend to the apple saplings." Naoki maintained his composure, a smile on his face. "Are you guys treating Rayquaza to a feast?"
"Mama!" Frosty Nixie nodded and then pleaded, "Mama?" (Naoki, can you make more delicious food? Rayquaza is so big! It doesn't seem full yet.)
Naoki gave Rayquaza a complicated look.
Seemingly afraid of being overheard by Rayquaza, Frosty Nixie jumped onto Naoki's shoulder and whispered, "Mama! Mama!" (Rayquaza is so pitiful! It lives in the sky and can only eat hard rocks when it's hungry. Naoki, let's make delicious cream cakes for Rayquaza together!)
"..." Naoki was at a loss for words.
He really wanted to explain that Rayquaza's food wasn't just rocks, but the energy within meteorites.
But looking at Frosty Nixie's eager eyes, he just couldn't bring himself to refuse.
His Frosty Nixie was just too kind-hearted.
"Alright, wait here, I'll make some for you." Naoki agreed.
"Mama!" Frosty Nixie cheered.
There was still plenty of cream left, so there was no need for Frosty Nixie to help.
Naoki told Frosty Nixie to continue playing while he turned back to the room and started baking a cream cake.
Eevee secretly followed.
As Naoki was cracking eggs, Eevee ran to his side and eagerly shouted, "Buu! Buu?" (Naoki! Can I evolve into a Dragon-type Pokemon?)
Naoki was taken aback for a second, not quite catching what Eevee said: "What? Dragon-type?"
Eevee nodded vigorously, "Buu!" (Yes! A great hero Dragon-type Pokemon like Rayquaza!)
Naoki understood now. Eevee must have been captivated by the story of Rayquaza saving the world. Instead of evolving into an Espeon that repels evil dragons, it now wanted to become a stronger Dragon-type Eevee.
But the problem was, Dragon-type Eevee didn't exist yet!
Up until the time of his crossing over, Game Freak hadn't introduced a Dragon-type evolution for Eevee.
Even if Eevee could evolve into a Dragon-type, he had no idea what the evolution method would be.
After a moment's thought, Naoki shook his head and said, "I'm afraid not. As of now, there's no such thing as a Dragon-type Eevee in this world."
"Buu..." Eevee looked dejected.
Naoki consoled it, "Don't be sad."
Eevee lifted its head to look at him.
Naoki smiled and said, "As long as you have the heart of a hero, no matter what form you evolve into, you can go on to save the world and protect others."
"You can be an Espeon, a Leafeon, or even a Sylveon. Even if you don't evolve, you can still protect others."
"Buu..." Eevee looked adorably confused.
After a moment, it seemed to understand, and excitedly nodded, "Buu!" (I get it now!)
With that, Eevee rushed out the door.
"That kid..."
Naoki smiled helplessly and then focused on baking the dessert for Rayquaza.
Time passed, and soon, the delightful aroma of a freshly baked cream cake filled the air.
The cake was a vision of creamy perfection, with a few bright red cherries adorning the snowy-white frosting. Cutting into it revealed a soft, golden interior, consisting of two layers with a fruity filling in between, adding to its flavor and texture.
Naoki cut the cream cake into several pieces and then took out some Pokeblocks, juice, and milk from the refrigerator, bringing them all to Snorlax Park.
As he approached, the group of Pokemon let out a chorus of cheerful cries.
Naoki could feel Rayquaza's gaze on him.
He also heard Porygon-Z happily introducing him to Rayquaza.
"Pory! Porygon! Pory!" (Rayquaza, this is Naoki! He's the one who told us about your world-saving exploits!)
Naoki: "..."
He swore that he had just randomly picked a story about a Dragon-type Pokemon to tell Aerodactyl and the others.
Hearing Porygon-Z's words, Rayquaza looked over once more and then opened its mouth, letting out a deep, resonating cry.
Naoki heard it say, "Not bad!"
Naoki was surprised. Was Rayquaza complimenting him?
Naoki stood by and listened as he heard Dragonite and the others ask Rayquaza questions one after another.
Questions like, "Has Senior Rayquaza always lived in the sky?" "Are there a lot of stars up there?" "Does Senior Rayquaza eat the moon?"
Rayquaza answered each question affably.
"Indeed, I've always lived in the sky." "Stars? There are indeed many stars, and they are all outside this planet." "I don't eat the moon, it's too big."
Every time Rayquaza answered, the Pokemon would exclaim in awe, "Senior Rayquaza is so amazing!"
Flattered by the praise, Rayquaza relaxed and enjoyed the unfamiliar food while chatting with its adoring fans.
Naoki found the whole exchange rather boring, as the Pokemon asked such simple questions.
After a while, he returned to the house and left Rayquaza to its party.
The gathering continued into the afternoon.
It was only when evening approached that Rayquaza finally bid farewell to Dragonite and the others, turning to fly back up into the sky.
And so it ended.
Naoki withdrew his gaze from the sky, breathed a sigh of relief, and turned to Dragonite, asking, "How did you think of calling Rayquaza here?"
Dragonite looked innocent, "Roar." (Because everyone wanted to meet Senior Rayquaza!)
Naoki: "..."
Oh well, Pokemon weren't humans after all. Rayquaza probably didn't mean it as a casual invitation when it gave Dragonite its dragon scale.
If Dragonite had any problems, or even if it didn't, it could call on Rayquaza.
"Alright then!" Naoki took a deep breath, about to head back inside for dinner, when he felt a familiar surge of energy.
He looked up and saw Rayquaza returning.
In its dragon claws, it held a "star" that glowed with a yellow light.
Rayquaza landed in the ranch and presented the "star" to the Pokemon before turning and soaring back into the sky.
And with that, it was truly gone.
Staring at the "star" in Dragonite's claws, Naoki was bewildered.
Dragonite and the other Pokemon also looked perplexed.
But soon, Naoki realized what was happening.
This was Rayquaza's way of returning the hospitality! Since one of the Pokemon had asked about stars earlier, Rayquaza had simply plucked one from the sky.
However, what left Naoki speechless was that it wasn't a real star!
It was a meteoroid, a yellow-core meteoroid!
A Meteoroid Pokemon, to be precise.
Shaped like a shining star, born in the stratosphere, dwelling in the ozone layer, this Pokemon was a mutation of nanomaterial particles, surviving by absorbing the dust particles around it, and serving as food for stronger Pokemon.
That stronger Pokemon was likely Rayquaza, who lived in the same ozone layer...
Naoki's thoughts were complicated as he considered this.
But soon, he had no more time to dwell on it.
The light emanating from the yellow meteoroid was beginning to fade.
This was a characteristic of this Pokemon; if its core was exposed for too long, it would soon dissipate and vanish from existence.
Seeing this, Naoki quickly returned to the room and retrieved a new Poke Ball, capturing the meteoroid Pokemon.
The Poke Ball shook a few times before falling still.
"Roar?" The Pokemon before him looked confused.
Naoki explained, "This isn't a star; it's a Pokemon called Meteoroid."
"If its core is exposed, it can't survive long in the open air. It will disappear unless it's contained within a Poke Ball, where it can live on."
Hearing this, Dragonite was shocked.
The stars in the sky were Pokemon too?!
Just then, they heard the sound of a vehicle approaching.
Naoki turned to see Zack driving up to the ranch.
He jumped out of the car, eyes wide, clearly astonished by what he had seen on his way there.
"Wasn't there something that just flew out of the ranch?!"
"Yes," Naoki replied concisely. "It was a Pokemon that came to visit the ranch."
"I see..." Zack recalled the black silhouette he had glimpsed on the road, muttering, "It startled me. I've never seen a Pokemon like that before. I'm just glad it's nothing dangerous."
