Chapter 374: Birthday
Chapter 374: Birthday
Rod couldn't understand why they needed to hire a mage for this situation.
If the play received poor reviews, they should find better playwrights and actors, not mages... Unless they expected them to charm people into coming with their magic?
However, even if the client was desperate, as long as the request wasn't illegal or unreasonable, they had to find a way to fulfill it.
Mages helped ordinary people with their troubles using magic and received appropriate compensation in return; this was the code of the mage.
Lucy, however, was full of confidence. "With Natsu's fire and Gray's ice, we can create the perfect atmosphere... I have Lyra of the Lyra Constellation, who can sing enchanting songs. It'll be a breeze to help the theater put on an amazing play!"
"Then good luck to you." Rod felt she was claiming her territory.
Lucy, brimming with enthusiasm, took the job offer and went to find Natsu, eager to set off immediately.
But she ended up being dragged by Natsu to do manual labor, saying they had to complete their planned tasks before departure.
Lucy had no choice but to accept her fate.
Rod and Mira placed a bet on Lucy's 'loss' rate for this job, and only then did Rod go to the bulletin board to post the job offer.
After posting it, Rod didn't go to move bricks but instead went to the counter to help Mira with her work.
Elfman, shouting 'Manly,' helped Rod finish the brick moving.
Both of them worked hard, hoping to finish early and leave with Mira.
Mira, of course, was busy as well.
Before noon, the three of them finished the necessary tasks and prepared to leave.
Rod entrusted the tavern's affairs to Laki, asking her to take good care of it.
Mira left the construction site matters to the Guild Master, asking him to handle it well.
Both of them assured her there wouldn't be any problems.
...
On their way back, Rod thought for a moment and said, "I feel like we need to hire more servers."
Mira nodded. "Yes, otherwise, we'll be overwhelmed later."
After the guild's reconstruction, the tavern's area would expand, and an open-air pub would be set up outside the guild.
Additionally, various facilities like swimming pools, billiards rooms, and gyms would be added, making it necessary to hire more servers.
Rod and Mira immediately discussed whether to recruit from within the guild or hire ordinary people from outside and who in the guild would be suitable for these jobs.
Elfman complained, "We rarely get to leave early, and yet you two are still talking about work?"
"Then let's talk about life." Rod said, "For example, who in the guild would be the most suitable girlfriend for Elfman? How about Laki?"
Mira shook her head. "If it was the old Elfman, Laki might have liked him, but now, with his constant 'manly' shouting, it's a no-go."
Elfman protested innocently, "But Sister, you used to complain that I was too weak, so I worked hard to become more manly..."
Ignoring him, Rod continued, "Then what about Levy? I feel she'd like a man like Elfman, who can give her a sense of security just by standing there."
Mira said regretfully, "But Levy is too short; even Elfman's legs are taller. Standing together, they'd look like father and daughter."
Rod shook his head. "That's a bit harsh on Levy. It's Elfman whose legs are taller, like Mira's."
"You're being harsh too..." Elfman couldn't understand what these two were thinking, "Why bring this up about me? Today's Sister's birthday, let's talk about her!"
The trio happily chatted as they went to buy ingredients, including Mila's favorite broccoli and sardines.
"Actually, her favorite food is rice cakes, but those are more suitable for breakfast or snacks. It's not really appropriate for a proper lunch."
Although today's meal was tailored to Mila's tastes, she insisted on buying the beef that Rod loved and the pork ribs that Elfman enjoyed.
The birthday cake had been ordered by Rod and Elfman the day before, and they would pick it up later.
The venue, of course, was Mila's home.
After washing their hands, Rod and Elfman began preparing the various ingredients in the kitchen.
Despite Rod's recent initiation into cooking, he still occasionally received criticism from Elfman. As he busily worked, he also had to remind Rod to thoroughly clean the gills and innards of the sardines.
Mila leaned against the doorway, smiling as she watched the two most important people in her life bustling about and bickering for her. A feeling of happiness welled up from the bottom of her heart.
Observing Rod's slightly awkward movements, she offered, "Should I help?"
"No need, we can handle it. If you're bored, why don't you change into some clothes and put on some makeup?"
Rod's hands were covered in fishy smells, and his apron was stained with water marks. He had to use his arms and back to gently push Mila out of the kitchen.
Mila watched them for a while from the doorway before heading upstairs.
Today had been a series of strange events. Mila was chased out of the kitchen by Rod, and Rod was constantly reminded by Elfman to be careful...
The two men worked busily in the kitchen for a while before finally finishing the last dish.
Mila followed Rod's suggestion and changed into a new outfit, sitting quietly at the table, waiting.
However, when Elfman emerged from the kitchen with a plate of food, he almost dropped it on the ground: "Sis... Sister?"
It wasn't that he was startled, but Mila's current outfit was quite striking.
Her long white hair was tied into a ponytail with a dark red headband. She wore a bold black tank top and matching hot pants, paired with black knee-high socks and black heels.
This was her returning to her previous style, and when she confidently crossed her legs, Elfman felt like he was about to be scolded like before.
"You took too long, Elfman!" Mila glared at him, her eyes narrowing, "Hurry up and bring it over!"
Elfman immediately complied, even mirroring his previous mannerisms and tone of voice!
"And you, come sit here!" Mila pointed at Rod and then patted the seat next to her, "Quickly!"
"Coming!" Rod grinned as he sat down, his arm brushing against hers, unafraid.
Elfman gave Rod a sympathetic look and went back to the kitchen to get the other dishes.
He decided to clean up the kitchen first, taking his time to think about what had just happened.
Mila stood with her hands on her hips, still glaring at Rod: "What's that attitude? Are you dissatisfied with me?"
"Not at all." Rod couldn't possibly be dissatisfied or afraid, but he found Mila's feigned anger quite adorable.
And those legs, that waist... he felt like his eyes weren't enough to take it all in.
"What are you looking at? Today is my birthday, where's my gift?"
This stutter made her lose her momentum, Miss Mila.
Rod opened his hand, revealing a small gift box.
Mila hummed as she opened it, finding a necklace she had admired before.
She had seen it while shopping but hadn't bought it, claiming it didn't suit her.
This man...
He had made an excuse to withhold her salary the week before for this!
