Chapter 373: Substitute Teacher
Chapter 373: Substitute Teacher
The process of obtaining the crown was uneventful, but Kyle was at a loss for what to do next.
For a long time, whenever he prepared to study the crown, he would end up staring at it in a daze.
Now, the crown had become Voldemort's Horcrux, and even if Rowena Ravenclaw had hidden some information within it, it would be impossible to access it.
What about trying it on? Kyle held up the crown and gestured above his head for a while before abandoning this somewhat reckless decision.
Once again, he gained nothing.
...
As Kyle put the box away and returned to the common room, he happened to meet Conna, who was looking for him.
"Class is about to start, and I thought you had already gone ahead."
"No, I had some other things to do." Kyle shook his head and took out a stack of textbooks, asking, "What's the next class?"
"Defense Against the Dark Arts..." Conna said with a hint of excitement.
Ever since the change in professor, the class had become much more interesting, no longer requiring them to read textbooks or act in plays, and it had quickly become a favorite among most students.
Except for a few Slytherins, like Malfoy...
His thoughts were pure; if Harry liked it, he disliked it, and that was all there was to it.
However, he only mocked Professor Lupin's shabby appearance, having only one decent robe, rather than saying that his classes were boring.
"I wonder what we'll learn today." Conna said as they walked, "We've already finished learning about Harpies and Dwarves, so the next topic should be a new magical creature, right?"
"It would be great if he could teach us how to deal with Dementors." She said with a hint of hope, "Yesterday, on the way to Herbology class, I only glanced at them from a distance, and I felt a chill all over."
"Professor Lupin is unlikely to teach that." Kyle shook his head, "But if you want to learn, I can teach you the Patronus Charm."
"Is that the spell you used on the train?" Conna asked.
"That's right." Kyle said, "The Patronus Charm is also recognized in the wizarding world as the most effective method to deal with Dementors. Do you want to learn it?"
"Sure..." Conna agreed without hesitation.
Kyle raised an eyebrow, "Call me Professor Kyle, and I'll teach you."
"In your dreams!" Conna kicked Kyle's calf in annoyance and turned away, leaving him with a view of her back.
The two of them made their way to the Defense Against the Dark Arts classroom.
However, to their surprise, the teacher waiting for them was not Professor Lupin, but Snape.
He noticed Conna's sullen expression and then looked at Kyle, his thoughts turning dark as his face instantly became gloomy.
Kyle quickly put away his smile, lowered his head, and silently walked into the classroom to take his seat under Snape's deadly gaze.
Conna also came over and sat next to him.
It might have been an illusion, but ever since she sat down, Kyle felt a chill at the back of his neck.
Fortunately, the class bell rang not long after.
Snape strode to the front, turned to face everyone, and said in his usual tone:
"Unfortunately, your Professor Lupin is feeling unwell today and is unable to teach. So, I'll be substituting for him."
"What's wrong with him?" someone asked with concern.
"Questions during class require a raised hand, Ravenclaw loses five points!" Snape glanced coldly at the speaker, who quickly closed his mouth in fear.
"There's no danger to his life." Snape's tone seemed to carry a hint of regret, "Additionally, if anyone speaks without permission again, they'll lose ten points."
The classroom fell silent, and even the sound of breathing seemed to diminish.
"Regarding the content you've studied, Professor Lupin has left no records..." Snape continued, "I must say, this lack of structure in teaching is rather amateurish."
"Professor Lupin taught us well..." someone muttered quietly, and other students nodded in agreement.
"You're too easily satisfied... I believe first-year students should be capable of dealing with dwarves... Ravenclaw, deduct ten points."
The classroom fell silent again.
"Today, we'll learn something different!" Snape said in a calm voice, "Everyone, turn to page 394 of your books!"
Although they found it a bit baffling, Snape's reputation preceded him, so they whispered among themselves as they turned to the specified page.
"Werewolves!" Snape said, "Who can tell me how to distinguish between a werewolf and a real wolf?"
Several students raised their hands.
"Miss Prince!"
Conna stood up, "Werewolves and real wolves differ in a few minor details. Werewolves have slightly shorter muzzles and smaller pupils..."
"Well done, Hufflepuff, ten points."
Snape nodded in satisfaction and continued, "Werewolves appear no different from ordinary people during the day, except for one thing. Who can tell me what it is?"
The flawless version is available at 69 Book Bar! 6=9+Book_Bar
A few more students raised their hands, and this time, he chose Autumn.
"Werewolves only transform into wolves on the night of the full moon."
"Incomplete." Snape waved his hand, indicating for her to sit down without any intention of awarding points, "In fact, they also become weak a few days before and after the full moon night.
Why are you all still standing there? Start taking notes."
The classroom filled with the rustling sound of quills scratching on parchment.
"Turn to page 395, there's a more detailed explanation..."
For the rest of the class, Snape didn't ask any more questions. He simply had everyone sit and copy notes about werewolves from the book.
He patrolled between the desks, ensuring everyone took comprehensive notes.
The students felt like they had returned to two years ago, when every class was spent copying notes.
Finally, the end-of-class bell rang, but Snape didn't let them leave.
"Each of you will write a paper for me on how to identify and kill werewolves. I expect two full rolls of parchment, due Monday morning."
Everyone quickly left the classroom, with Kyle leading the way.
For the entire class, he had sat silently, trying to minimize his presence.
Kyle had a premonition that if he had made a mistake or Snape had caught him in an error, the consequences would have been far more severe.
Fortunately, the class finally ended.
Kyle was the first to exit the classroom, and the others followed. Once they were out of Snape's earshot, they began discussing animatedly.
"Two rolls of parchment!" Mikel exclaimed, "That's enough for me to write five times the amount of my previous Defense Against the Dark Arts assignments."
"Even for Transfiguration assignments, it would be three times as much." Ryan added, "I really hope Professor Lupin recovers soon, then maybe we won't have to write this paper."
Kyle didn't join their discussion but quickened his pace down the stairs.
It wasn't until he returned to the common room and the wooden door slowly closed behind him that the prickly feeling on his back gradually dissipated.
