Chapter 373: Substitute Teacher
Chapter 373: Substitute Teacher
The process of obtaining the crown was uneventful, but now Kyle didn't know what to do next.
For a long time afterward, whenever he prepared to study the crown, he would end up staring at it blankly.
Now that it had become Voldemort's Horcrux, even if Rowena Ravenclaw had hidden some information within it, there was no way to access it.
"Maybe I should just try wearing it?" Kyle held the crown and gestured with it above his head for a while before abandoning this somewhat reckless decision.
Once again, he had made no progress.
...
As Kyle put the box away and returned to the common room, he happened to run into Connor, who had been looking for him.
"Class is about to start. I thought you might have gone ahead without me."
"No, I just had something else to do." Kyle shook his head and took out a stack of textbooks. "What's next?"
"Defense Against the Dark Arts..." Connor said, a hint of anticipation in his voice.
Ever since the change in professor, and with no more reading textbooks or staging plays, Defense Against the Dark Arts had become interesting and was now the favorite class for most students.
Except for a few Slytherins, like Malfoy...
His feelings were straightforward; if Harry liked it, he hated it, plain and simple.
But he merely mocked Professor Lupin's shabby appearance, owning only one decent robe, instead of saying that his classes were boring.
"I wonder what we'll learn today." As they walked, Connor said, "We've finished with Hinkypunks and Grindylows, so hopefully, we'll be moving on to new magical creatures."
"It would be great if he could teach us how to deal with Dementors." She said hopefully, "Yesterday on my way to Herbology class, I just caught a glimpse of them and felt a chill down my spine."
"Professor Lupin probably won't teach that." Kyle shook his head, "But if you want to learn, I can teach you the Patronus Charm."
"Is that the spell you used on the train?" Connor asked.
"Yes." Kyle said, "The Patronus Charm is also recognized as the most effective method against Dementors in the wizarding world. So, do you want to learn?"
"Okay..." Connor agreed without hesitation.
Kyle raised an eyebrow, "Then call me Professor Kyle, and I'll teach you."
"In your dreams!" Connor kicked Kyle's calf in annoyance and turned to give him the cold shoulder.
The two of them made their way to the Defense Against the Dark Arts classroom.
However, the surprise was that the one waiting for them was not Professor Lupin, but Snape.
He noticed Connor's annoyed expression and then looked at Kyle, his face suddenly turning gloomy as if he had thought of something.
Kyle quickly put away his smile, lowered his head, and walked silently into the classroom under Snape's deadly gaze.
Connor also came and sat down next to him.
Perhaps it was his imagination, but since she sat down, Kyle felt a chill on his neck.
Fortunately, the class bell rang soon after.
Snape strode to the front of the class, turned to face everyone, and said in his usual tone: "Unfortunately, your Professor Lupin is feeling unwell today and cannot make it to class. So, I will be taking over for him."
"What's wrong with him?" someone asked with concern.
"Asking questions in class requires raising your hand. Five points deducted, Ravenclaw!" Snape glared coldly at the student who had spoken, silencing him immediately.
"His life is not in danger." Snape's tone seemed a bit regretful, "Also, if anyone else speaks without permission, you will lose ten points.
"Professor Lupin taught well..." Someone muttered under their breath, and others murmured in agreement.
"That's because you're too easily satisfied... I believe first-year students should be capable of dealing with hobgoblins... Ten points from Ravenclaw."
The classroom fell silent once more.
"Today, we will learn something different!" Snape said in a calm voice, "Everyone turn to page 394 in your books!"
Although the students found this a bit baffling, they could only whisper among themselves and turn to the specified page since Snape was well-known for his strictness.
"Werewolves!" Snape said, "Who can tell me how to distinguish a werewolf from a regular wolf?"
Several students raised their hands.
"Miss Prince!"
Connor stood up, "Werewolves and real wolves differ in a few small ways. A werewolf's snout and nose are slightly shorter, and their pupils are smaller..."
"Very good, ten points to Gryffindor."
Snape nodded in satisfaction and then continued to ask, "Werewolves look no different from ordinary people most of the time, except for one thing. Who can tell me what it is?"
Several hands went up again, and this time he chose Autumn.
"Werewolves only transform into wolf-like creatures during the full moon."
"Incomplete." Snape waved his hand for her to sit down without awarding any points, "In fact, they also become weak in the days before and after the full moon.
Why are you all still standing around? Start taking notes on this."
The sound of quills scratching on parchment filled the classroom.
"Turn to page 395, there is a more detailed explanation there..."
For the rest of the class, Snape didn't ask any more questions. He simply had everyone sit and take notes on werewolves from the textbook.
He walked between the desks, ensuring that everyone took sufficiently comprehensive notes.
The students felt as if they had gone back in time to their first year, when every class involved copying notes from the board.
Finally, the bell rang, but Snape didn't let them leave.
"Each of you will write an essay on how to identify and kill werewolves. I expect two rolls of parchment, to be handed in Monday morning."
Everyone quickly left the classroom, with Kyle in the lead.
For the entire class, he had sat quietly, trying to make himself as inconspicuous as possible.
Kyle had a premonition that if he had said one wrong word or made a mistake that Snape caught, the consequences would have been much worse than for the other students.
Thankfully, the class had finally ended.
Kyle was the first one out of the classroom, and the others soon followed. It wasn't until they were out of earshot of Snape that they began to discuss the class.
"Two rolls of parchment!" Mick complained, "That's enough for me to write five times the usual Defense Against the Dark Arts homework!"
"Even for Transfiguration homework, it would be three times as much!" Ryan added, "I really hope Professor Lupin gets well soon so we don't have to write this essay."
Kyle didn't join in their conversation but quickened his pace down the stairs.
It wasn't until he reached the common room and the wooden door slowly closed behind him that the feeling of unease finally faded away.
