Chapter 373: An Unusual Lustre
Chapter 373: An Unusual Lustre
A fleeting moment of hesitation crossed Maryka's smiling face, but her tone remained gentle as she replied, "Oh dear, such cruel words. But I've heard that the Kingdom of Yunshan has no nobility besides its king. And you're not a noble either; you're what they call a 'commoner,' aren't you?"
"How dare you compare us! I'm the Captain of the Guards, appointed by King Fernande himself!"
Gornel lifted his chin proudly. "Of course, the Kingdom of Yunshan has no nobility. King Fernande banished them long ago. The most noble person in the entire kingdom is the king, and then it's me!"
"Did you think I was afraid earlier? No, that was strategy at work," Maryka retorted.
"It's true that Team Disaster has a formidable reputation, but King Fernande will not lose! No matter how powerful a pirate may be, they are still just a pirate!"
With a smug laugh, Gornel reached out and pulled off one of the white cloaks beside him, revealing a peach-shaped figure. He gave it a pat, and it transformed into a fresh, red peach that he caught in his hand.
"And your fate as a pirate will be just as fruitless!"
He popped the peach into his mouth, biting into it with a few quick chews, and then casually pinched the pit. "Vitality Peach Gun!"
The peach pit stirred up a cloud of dust in his hand, swiftly transforming into a gun made of the pit, which then sprayed out fine peach seeds like a shotgun.
Simultaneously, the white-cloaked figures around him sprang into action, all rushing towards Maryka.
Pah!
A faint sound rang out as the fastest-moving peach seed was blocked by a swirling black waterfall just before it could hit the woman, deflecting the attack.
The black waterfall swirled and twisted like a torrent of water, shooting forward and piercing through the oncoming white cloaks.
As it penetrated them, the cloaks erupted in a cloud of dust, leaving behind nothing but food scattered on the ground.
The 'waterfall' dispersed, revealing not water, but hair—a wild, writhing mass of hair that framed Maryka's delicate face, still wearing that gentle smile.
"So, a lone king, just like Sag. But why did you have to become like this? I don't understand why your king's desires would be any less greedy than Sag's."
She feigned a thoughtful expression, seemingly unconcerned about Gornel standing before her.
"Damn it! Don't ignore me!" Gornel roared, raising the peach pit gun as if to fire again. But just as he was about to pull the trigger, a hair-thin spike shot towards him, piercing his heart and exiting through his back.
"Huh?"
He lowered his head, staring blankly at the hair that had impaled him, his eyes gradually losing focus.
"If you don't want to be ignored, then you have to defeat me," Maryka said with a smile. "Looks like your luck has run out. You're going to die."
Such a man was not yet worthy of being a threat to anyone.
His ability was certainly unique, and he wasn't exactly weak. In fact, his ability would probably be a perfect fit for the Big Mom Pirates, or perhaps it suited Cracker's style.
But as things stood, he didn't even know how to use Haki, so he wasn't qualified to be her opponent.
And Maryka had no interest in fighting someone like him.
"Food is not a toy," she continued. "It sustains human life and brings happiness. Wasting food is a terrible thing. I hope you'll be more mindful in your next life."
Tilting her head slightly and maintaining her smile, she watched as Gornel knelt and then fell forward, his eyes dull and lifeless.
"I wonder if there's a food warehouse around here?"
She walked past Gornel's body and headed in a different direction, disappearing into the passageway.
Chapter 373: An Unusual Lustre
Once the hall was completely empty, one of the luminous, jade-like floor tiles suddenly lifted, and a middle-aged man clad in a black robe with an apron tied around his waist emerged. He glanced to his left and right before turning toward the large iron gate, his mouth twisting into a grimace as he bared his teeth.
"Becky..."
...
In another passage, Lily walked down the spacious corridor, occasionally glancing around her surroundings.
While not as luxurious as Sag's palace, the corridor was illuminated by a bright, glowing light. Upon closer inspection, the light wasn't purely white but had a yellowish hue, contributing to the sense of sacred opulence.
However, this didn't quite match what Moria had described.
"Stone Conductors are a unique form of lighting found only in the Western Sea. They're useful in mines, eliminating the need for lamps or open flames. But none of them are this big."
Lily ran her hand along the corridor wall. "Given the size of this corridor, the palace must be huge. They must have hollowed out the entire mountain. It shouldn't be possible to illuminate such a large area with these stones. But this light..."
Earlier, Sag had also expressed uncertainty about its value, implying that he might simply want to acquire it because it looked pretty and would make a nice decoration.
Perhaps, then, these stones weren't particularly valuable.
Lily withdrew her finger, frowning at the faint glow that lingered on her fingertip. There was something odd about this light.
Slice!
Suddenly, the sound of something being cut rang out. At the spot where Lily had reached out to touch, the wall seemed to have been sliced open, leaving a smooth incision.
Lily's eyes narrowed as she noted that the cut was even more precise than those made by a skilled swordsman.
As the cut appeared, a hand pushed through, widening the opening into a person-sized gap.
"Won't you come in, my guest?"
A sinister voice echoed from within.
Lily peered into the opening but could only see the figure's clothing—a chef's outfit left open like a doctor's coat.
"What's the matter? Are you afraid? You've already committed a capital offense by trespassing in the king's palace. Now, will you refuse my invitation as well? Every intruder must undergo this trial."
"Accept my invitation, and you might just survive. Refuse, and death awaits!"
At his words, Lily hooked her lip into a smirk. "Very well."
Clang!
Sword qi flashed, and in an instant, several large gashes appeared on the wall, accompanied by the clatter of smoothly cut stones falling to the ground. A larger opening now gaped where the previous cut had been.
Amidst the falling stones were strange silken threads, along with severed tools and broken firearms—the remnants of traps.
Stepping through the opening, Lily shook her head as she regarded the stunned man before her. "You invited me, and here I am. But I can't help but wonder, did you extend the same invitation to Sag?"
A trial for every intruder? Lily was certain he hadn't invited Sag.
Otherwise, she would have encountered a pool of blood instead of this man, who was putting on a show, setting traps, and waiting for someone to walk into his lair.
And just like that, this man would meet the same fate.
Her bounty was not just for show.
