Chapter 372: Deep in the Tunnel
Chapter 372: Deep in the Tunnel
Clank! Clank! Clank!
"Huh?"
After just two swings with this iron pickaxe, Kaghi was startled by the strange sound it produced.
The pickaxe felt no different from an ordinary one in his grip.
But when it struck the ground, it emitted a peculiar sound, and the feedback it provided was not what one would expect from a regular tool.
What happened next was even more baffling to Kaghi.
The soil beneath his feet, after just two strikes with the odd pickaxe, inexplicably rose up in a perfectly square block, as if it had been precisely cut with a tool! This phenomenon went beyond Kaghi's knowledge as an Awakener.
"Lord Diablo?" Kaghi turned to Lindsey, bewildered.
At that moment, he noticed Lindsey pulling out another pickaxe.
However, unlike Kaghi's, Lindsey's iron pickaxe had a fiery crimson glow on its surface, clearly indicating it was no ordinary item!
"Don't be alarmed, just keep digging," Lindsey said calmly.
"This pickaxe is a new technology developed in Volcano City. If you reveal this, don't blame me for not warning you."
"..." Kaghi was too intimidated to ask further questions.
Following Lindsey's instructions, the Sensor swung the pickaxe downward with determination, dislodging chunks of soil that Lindsey then collected and stored in his pouch.
Kaghi was secretly amazed.
Tools with spatial storage capabilities were only crafted by highly skilled artisans, and their price started at a minimum of a hundred gold coins.
The cost increased significantly if the tool could store a larger number of items.
Considering the sheer amount of soil Lindsey was storing...
Kaghi swallowed, and an image immediately formed in his mind.
A young man from Volcano City, well-traveled and unafraid of Seventh Stage Awakeners, and with substantial financial resources!
With all these qualities combined, this person's identity was undoubtedly not ordinary.
Kaghi thought of himself.
If he could serve this young master well, perhaps this encounter could turn into an opportunity for him! With newfound motivation, Kaghi increased the frequency of his pickaxe swings and focused intently on his task.
The tunnel they were digging was not a vertical shaft but a sloping passage that turned left every hundred meters to maintain an accurate direction.
With their disciplined approach, Kaghi's sensing skills allowed him to notice something peculiar.
After they had dug over a hundred meters underground.
The soil around them was noticeably more yellow than the soil above, and its texture felt slightly looser to the touch.
It was as if someone had recently hollowed out the mountain and then refilled it with soil! Kaghi's heart skipped a beat, and he immediately turned to Lindsey: "Lord Diablo, may I ask where we're digging to?"
Lindsey replied with a question of his own: "Have you forgotten who we're tracking?"
"..." Kaghi wiped the cold sweat from his forehead and forced himself to stay calm: "Lord, why are you seeking those Seventh Stage Awakeners? They just started a war in Nine Bays City not long ago, and approaching them now seems too dangerous."
Lindsey explained: "For over a month, the forest in the Forest Courtyard has been undergoing abnormal changes. You and those adventurers were trapped here because of this. Do you know the true reason behind all this?"
Kaghi asked cautiously,
"But... hasn't the Forest Fury already subsided?"
"And over the past week, the forest's condition has been getting better, no longer as restless as before."
Lindsey nodded,
"That's true, the last crisis has indeed passed."
"But the root of the problem hasn't been resolved. If we don't want such incidents to happen frequently, we need to talk to them."
"..." The meaning behind Lindsey's words—
Was he planning to stop two Seventh Stage Awakeners? Kaghi instantly sobered up and said with a stiff voice,
"Please forgive me for speaking out of turn."
"Lord Diablo, if they want to do something, with our capabilities, it's absolutely impossible to stop them."
Lindsey shook his head slightly,
"There are many secrets involved, it's not as absolute as you see."
"..."
At this point, both of them stopped discussing the topic.
They continued digging deeper underground.
The depth they had reached even exceeded the area where the Echo Tunnel was located.
With the lack of air circulation, the air underground became stifling and hot, making it difficult to breathe and causing dizziness.
Lindsey pulled out his map to check.
They were now only about ten meters away from the Sealed Chamber below.
"Kaghi, from now on, I'll lead the way, and you follow behind me."
Kaghi immediately moved back to the upper part of the slope, nodding nervously,
"Are we almost there?"
"Exactly," Lindsey confirmed Kaghi's guess and added, "Kaghi, if you want to run away now, I won't stop you. The matter ahead is very serious, and it's best if you don't do anything that might cause misunderstandings."
—He could run.
Hearing such a response from Lindsey, Kaghi naturally felt a bit tempted.
But as he looked at Lindsey's back, still digging downward, he hesitated involuntarily.
His hesitation wasn't because he wanted to save the safety of the Forest Courtyard.
It was because, after realizing Lindsey's identity as an important figure in Vulcan City, he was reluctant to sever ties with such an existence.
For an ordinary Awakened,
being able to interact with such a prominent person was a once of rare opportunity.
It was something worth risking safety for!
Snap—
While Kaghi was still hesitating, Lindsey's actions were swift.
The Meteor Hammer, glowing with a fiery red light, swung rapidly, causing the soil to disappear quickly.
After digging a few more meters,
Crack—
With the sound of soil breaking, a piece of the ground under Lindsey's feet vanished.
What followed was no longer soft soil,
but a Dark Skylight leading directly to the cave below.
Hum—
Almost simultaneously,
a faint golden light flickered from below, accompanied by a weak yet determined figure:
"Child, move behind me."
"Whatever happens, don't come out!"
"...”
—It was Hans Ke.
Lindsey immediately recognized the voice from his past experience in in at the in him's' voice, him pause and said,
"Is it Mr. Hans Ke below? We have no ill intentions!"
"..."
After Lindsey spoke, the Lawful Radiance below paused.
After a few seconds, Hans Ke's weak voice sounded,
"You... aren't Muun's people?"
"Who are you?"
