Chapter 370: What Are You Really Worried About?
Chapter 370: What Are You Really Worried About?
Dumbledore was equally surprised after listening to Nicolas' explanation.
While he was already surprised by the extent of the damage to the Time Turner when he first saw it, he never expected Ivan to have the ability to affect its operation.
However, Dumbledore quickly recovered from his surprise and said to Nicolas, "His name is Ivan Hals, a third-year student. I thought you would have some impression of him!"
"Hals? Is he the one who protected the Philosopher's Stone last time?" Nicolas Flamel mused for a moment, then recalled who Dumbledore was referring to and immediately felt some affection for Ivan.
"Yes!" Dumbledore nodded.
"That's quite a coincidence. I often saw him in the Daily Prophet when I was reading the newspaper", Nicolas Flamel said with a smile.
Dumbledore noticed that there were many newspapers on the table, with the top few articles being reports about Ivan. He then remembered that Nicolas always had the habit of reading every issue of the newspaper.
"I remember he was a Potion genius. Does he also know some Alchemy?" Nicolas Flalem was puzzled. It wasn't easy to affect the operation of a Time Turner; it required a very high level of alchemical skill.
"He is an extremely rare all-rounder. He has made some very useful magical devices in the past two years, and I hear that the Ministry of Magic has purchased quite a few of them", Dumbledore praised.
"That's quite an interesting young wizard", Nicolas Flamel laughed. Even in his long life, he had never met someone as outstanding as Ivan at the age of twelve or thirteen.
This made Nicolas Flamel interested in this young wizard whom he had never met.
"Albus, since you are familiar with Hals, what do you think of his character?" Nicolas Flamel suddenly asked.
"What? Are you interested in taking on another student?" Dumbledore laughed.
"I need to see if he's a good fit. I don't want to leave all my assets to you guys when the time comes", Nicolas Flamel pouted.
Having lived for over six hundred years, Nicolas Flamel had come to terms with many things. He originally planned to donate all his books to the three major magical schools in Europe after his death, leaving only this house and some memorable alchemical items for his own use.
After all, none of the students he had taken in his early years had outlived him, and he had no real attachments.
But Ivan's appearance reignited Nicolas Flamel's interest in taking on a new student. He felt this might be fate, otherwise, it wouldn't be such a coincidence.
"Hals? That's hard to say", Dumbledore mused, frowning and taking a long time to respond.
"Oh, even you can't figure him out? You find it difficult?" Nicolas Flamel was quite surprised. Ivan Hals, no matter how talented, was still just a twelve or thirteen-year-old wizard.
"He is a very complex young wizard. Please forgive me for using such terms for a child!" Dumbledore said, with a hint of reminiscence on his face.
Dumbledore did not directly share his own views with Nicolas Flamel but tried to give an objective account of what Ivan had done in recent years, allowing Nicolas to make his own judgment.
Among all the students he had taught, Ivan was undoubtedly the most special. Dumbledore saw many wonderful qualities in Ivan, such as bravery, intelligence, loyalty to friends, and the ability to resist temptation (returning the Elder Wand), and so on.
But he also knew that Ivan was eager to enhance his power, even to the point of risking his life. He was also very skilled at lying and concealing things and showed no regard for the rules of the Ministry of Magic or Hogwarts.
After finishing, Dumbledore quietly watched Nicolas Flamel, waiting for his evaluation.
"Brilliant, truly brilliant!" Nicolas Flamel clapped, unable to resist asking, "Albus, are you sure you're talking about something that really happened and not a fairy tale you heard somewhere?"
Nicolas Flamel found it hard to imagine that a young wizard named Ivan Hals could have such incredible experiences! Battling a giant troll, flying on a dragon, facing and defeating the Dark Lord twice, exposing and driving away two Defense Against the Dark Arts professors—such experiences were truly legendary!
"It seems my luck is good!" Nicolas Flamel said with a sigh.
Dumbledore smiled bitterly, feeling that Nicolas Flamel was being too optimistic. In his view, Ivan was a young wizard who could easily go astray without proper guidance. Because Ivan was so outstanding, he needed to be watched and directed towards the right path.
"Can you imagine, Nicolas? An eleven-year-old child, after defeating the legendary Dark Lord, his first reaction was to try to hide himself and push the glory onto his friends, even coming up with excuses to fool me."
Thinking back to their conversation at the end of Ivan's first year, Dumbledore felt a headache. He couldn't understand what Ivan was thinking, and he had never felt this way even when dealing with a young Tom.
"You just feel that Hals' growth has exceeded your control, so you're worried!" Nicolas Flamel said casually, completely disregarding Dumbledore's earlier words. He continued, "Do you think Hals hates Muggles and wants to kill them all?"
"No! He has no ill feelings towards Muggles and is on good terms with a Muggle-born child", Dumbledore shook his head.
"Or is he arrogant, cruel, and obsessed with Dark Magic?" Nicolas asked, enunciating each word.
"Not really!" Dumbledore shook his head again.
"Then what are you worried about?" Nicolas Flamel asked, puzzled. "You can't impose your standards on him, Albus! Not everyone is a saint, and it's normal for a capable young wizard to have his own ideas. Even if he wants to do something, so what? It might not be bad to have someone else as the Minister of Magic. It's certainly better than some incompetent fools in power."
Nicolas Flamel didn't care about the minor flaws in Ivan that Dumbledore mentioned. Compared to Ivan's outstanding abilities, these could all be ignored.
In his experience, none of the exceptionally talented and brilliant individuals were content to be ordinary. It was only natural for them to want to make a difference.
The progress of the world was driven by such people.
"Or do you see yourself in him, which is why you can't let it go?" Nicolas Flamel suddenly realized something and looked at Dumbledore, asking.
