Chapter 37: The Pitiful Lord Cubero
Chapter 37: The Pitiful Lord Cubero
It was late at night. The dark, oppressive night had enveloped the entire alley.
Standing in the shadows, Su Nan gazed at the brightly lit mansion in the distance. Despite its ordinary appearance, which paled in comparison to the grand and opulent noble residences in Stone Bell City, this mansion was one of the strongholds of the Spark Sect in the Golden Rock Province.
After arriving in Stone Bell City, Su Nan had spent three days staking out the area, tracking numerous people who entered and exited the mansion. Unfortunately, none of them were involved in the capture of magical creatures.
He didn't intend to waste any more time here and decided to capture someone for questioning tonight.
It didn't take long for a suitable target to appear.
A man wrapped in a warm cloak emerged from the mansion. He casually surveyed the surroundings before hurriedly stepping into the night.
Su Nan didn't follow immediately. Instead, he waited patiently for a while before calmly walking out of the alley in the direction the man had taken.
Yinlong had already tailed the man, so there was no risk of losing him. This distance also wouldn't raise the man's suspicions.
Following at a distance, they wandered for about half an hour before Yinlong signaled that the target had stopped.
Su Nan immediately quickened his pace. Soon, he reached the location where Yinlong was waiting.
"What is this guy doing here?"
Su Nan raised an eyebrow at the ordinary house in front of him. It was a common dwelling in the civilian residential area. What was the Spark Sect member doing here in the middle of the night?
He gestured for Yinlong to stay and keep watch, then cast a layer of wind energy particles over himself. His body became light as he leaped over the courtyard wall, landing silently on the ground.
As soon as he landed, his powerful perception picked up the sounds coming from inside the room, and his face twisted with an odd expression.
"My darling, I miss you so much."
"I miss you too, dear Honey. Lord Cubero has been preoccupied with the manor's issues lately and hasn't been paying me any attention. We'll have plenty of time to be together now."
"That's great. Let me taste Lady Cubero first."
The room was filled with the sounds of intimate affection.
"..."
A wave of pity washed over Su Nan for the unseen Lord Cubero. It was bad enough to be plagued by a malevolent spirit, but to have his wife cheat on him was truly pitiful.
Shaking his head, Su Nan no longer bothered to hide his presence and strode confidently toward the room. He had already sensed that there were no other life signs in the house besides the two people inside.
It made sense; they were having a secret rendezvous and wouldn't bring any unnecessary company.
"Who's there!"
The man inside the room quickly noticed Su Nan's unhidden footsteps.
By the time Su Nan pushed the door open, the man had already jumped out of bed and grabbed his weapon from the table, his eyes wary and fixed on the door.
Behind him, a heavily made-up, beautiful woman clutched the blanket, her face filled with panic as she huddled at the head of the bed.
"Who are you?" the man demanded sharply.
Su Nan didn't respond. He raised his hand and shot a bolt of lightning at the man.
The man didn't have time to react, his body twitching as he fell to the ground, his eyes rolling back as he fainted.
The sight terrified the woman on the bed. She covered her face with her hands and took a deep breath, preparing to scream. However, the casting time for her scream was too long, and Su Nan shot another bolt of lightning, causing her to twitch and faint as well.
Closing the door behind him, Su Nan used Mage Hand to lift the unconscious man from the ground and wake him up.
Before the man could speak, Su Nan cast Charm Person, causing the man's eyes to glaze over.
"Name."
"Honey Diomand."
"Your position within the Spark Sect."
"Three-star disciple."
Su Nan was slightly disappointed.
In the Spark Sect, ordinary disciples were ranked from one to five stars, with one star being the lowest and five stars being the highest. Below the rank of High Priest, three-star disciples were still at the bottom of the hierarchy and likely didn't have access to core matters.
"Do you know about the capture of magical creatures?"
"Yes."
Su Nan's spirits lifted slightly. "Tell me more."
Honey paused for a moment, then with a vacant gaze, he continued, "The ones responsible for this are High Priests Troy and Ryan. They almost go out every day, but they haven't managed to capture the magical creature yet. The High Priest is very upset about it."
"Every day? Then why haven't I seen anyone entering or leaving the manor?"
"They use underground tunnels to enter and exit the manor."
Su Nan rubbed his forehead, feeling a bit frustrated.
Of course, this was a secret stronghold. The Spark Sect members wouldn't dare to frequently enter and exit through the main gate, or they would have been noticed long ago. The existence of tunnels was quite normal.
He had simply fallen into a mental blind spot and hadn't considered this possibility.
"Still inexperienced," Su Nan muttered to himself with a self-deprecating smile. He then asked, "Where do the people who capture magical creatures usually go?"
"North of the city," Honey said blankly. "For some reason, the magical creature's activity is limited to the northern part of the city, so High Priests Troy and Ryan have been searching there."
Su Nan nodded in understanding.
It seemed he needed to shift his search to the northern part of the city.
Although he now knew about the secret tunnels, who knew where they led? If the exit was in a remote, abandoned well or a civilian's house, it could take a long time to find.
In comparison, it might be better to try his luck in the northern part of the city.
Once the Spark Sect discovered the magical creature, the chase would likely cause a significant disturbance. By splitting up with Yinlong, they had a good chance of finding it.
Yinlong's ability to shift between the physical and ethereal planes made him perfect for searching in a complex urban environment.
After some thought, Su Nan had a plan in mind.
He continued to question Honey, but when he was sure he wouldn't get any more valuable information, he prepared to deal with him.
Just then, Su Nan's expression changed, and he suddenly turned to look at the table beside him.
The room's windows and doors were tightly shut, with only a sliver of moonlight seeping through the cracks, casting silver patterns on the floor and table.
A small cat was standing on the table, its slender, graceful body illuminated by the moonlight, its sleek white fur and ice-blue, gem-like eyes shining.
A cat?
Su Nan was taken aback, his gaze sharpening. He quickly flipped his wrist, and a Earth Rune Gem appeared between his index and middle fingers, ready to activate at a moment's notice.
The room's doors and windows were closed. How did this cat get in?
And with his perception, how could he have missed a cat approaching him?
Something was off!
As Su Nan's mind raced, the cat began to approach him naturally.
Its slender body moved with a graceful, almost mesmerizing elegance, each step light and agile. It wore a small, delicate golden bell around its neck, tied with a red ribbon.
For a moment, Su Nan felt as if he were watching a wealthy young lady strolling lazily in her garden.
Reaching the edge of the table, the cat leaped down, landing lightly on the ground. It then looked up at Su Nan and Honey with its gem-like ice-blue eyes, curiosity evident in its gaze.
"Meow, what are you two doing?"
